How much does the 2017 Subaru Forester cost?

Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.

There are 2,791 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of choices to compare by trim, mileage, and condition.

Is the 2017 Subaru Forester a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 4.7/5 user-rated SUV with an expert score of 6.3/10. The model scores 7/10 across Form and function, Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its spacious interior, exceptional safety features, and reliable all-wheel-drive capability. The review summary also points to strong value and comfort, which fits the Forester’s practical, easy-to-live-with character.

For you, that means the Forester makes the most sense if you want a compact crossover that emphasizes utility, peace of mind, and everyday usefulness over flash. With 34.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop carefully.

Is the 2017 Subaru Forester reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The review summary highlights reliability, dependable all-wheel-drive capability, and a trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers. The expert evaluation also describes the Forester as delivering decent reliability and a clear purpose, which reinforces its reputation as a vehicle you can count on.

If you’re buying used, the main long-term risk is condition variability, so a careful inspection matters more than the badge itself.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Subaru Forester?

At 62% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing multiple listings at similar prices. Focus on signs of prior body damage, uneven wear, and any evidence that the vehicle’s condition doesn’t match its asking price. Because this model is often chosen for practicality and all-weather use, condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Forester is described as having a sensible, value-focused version and a turbocharged version with added power and exclusive features, so base-model equipment gaps matter if you want more comfort or technology.
• Powertrain: The standard model is the less expensive choice and is described as better on gas mileage, while the turbocharged version adds power and performance but also cost and compromise.
• Safety package: EyeSight brings adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning, and Rear Automatic Braking is also available; some features are not flawless in operation.
• Infotainment: All but the base model get a larger 7-inch display, and the upgraded system adds text-messaging support and Siri Eyes Free, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not offered.
• Fuel efficiency: The less expensive model is described as getting better gas mileage, while the turbocharged version is noted at 25 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2017 Subaru Forester trim should I buy?

The 2017 Subaru Forester is offered in 4 trim levels: 2.5i, Premium, Limited, and Touring.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5i: This is the value-focused choice if you want the Forester’s core strengths at the lowest cost. It’s the trim to start with if you care most about practicality, all-weather usefulness, and better gas mileage.
• Premium: This is the trim to consider if you want a better-equipped Forester without jumping all the way to the top of the range. It should suit you if you want a more balanced mix of price and features.
• Limited: This trim is the better pick if you want more upscale equipment and a stronger sense of refinement than the lower trims provide.
• Touring: This is the most feature-rich choice and fits you best if you want the most upscale Forester experience and are willing to pay for it.

The safety package centers on EyeSight, and the upgraded system is a major part of the Forester’s appeal, though some features are not standard on every trim.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Subaru Forester?

This looks like a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right listing.

• Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,791 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 62.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,258, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Subaru Forester's resale value?

The current average of $14,631 sits slightly above last year's $14,592.

That small increase suggests the Forester has held its value fairly well in the near term. For a future seller, that kind of stability is helpful because it points to steady buyer interest rather than sharp depreciation. The model’s practical reputation and broad appeal should continue to support demand if your vehicle is clean, well maintained, and accident-free.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Subaru Forester safe?

The 2017 Subaru Forester earns a four-star rating from the federal government for front passenger protection in a frontal impact collision.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

EyeSight is the named driver-assistance suite, and it includes adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and forward-collision warning. Rear Automatic Braking is also available, along with automatic high-beam assist and steering-responsive headlights. Some of these systems do not always work flawlessly, and the lane-keeping assist can feel disconcerting to use.

Should I buy a 2017 Subaru Forester or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 62% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Expert or safety highlight specific to this year from the expert evaluation: the 2017 model adds a new EyeSight system, Rear Automatic Braking, and steering-responsive headlights.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $12,528, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,631 average.
• It offers nearly class-leading space and a close-to-perfect safety score.

The bottom line: If you want the newer model-year updates and a still-stable price, the 2017 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is saving money upfront, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers many of the Forester traits that matter most.

How does the 2017 Subaru Forester compare to the 2017 Honda CR-V?

Our experts score the 2017 Subaru Forester 6.3/10 and the 2017 Honda CR-V 8.7/10.

The CR-V is the stronger overall choice if you want the better-rated used SUV, while the Forester still appeals if you value its lower average used price and standard all-wheel drive. The Honda also brings more power and better fuel economy figures, while the Subaru counters with a lower average used price and a slightly stronger good-and-great-deal share. If you’re shopping on value and all-weather practicality, the Forester remains worth a look; if you want the more polished all-around package, the CR-V has the edge.
