CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Nissan Sentra

Summary
With 913 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,220.00, 24.5% of 2017 Nissan Sentras for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Nissan Sentra 5 / 5 stars.
50.3% of 2017 Sentra models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Nissan Sentra stands out as a practical compact sedan with a stronger emphasis on efficiency and everyday usability than on outright performance. In its seventh generation, the Sentra was described as more practical than before, with a more spacious interior and a more fuel-efficient powertrain. It was also 150 pounds lighter than the outgoing model, which helped reinforce its easygoing, commuter-friendly character.
For 2017, Nissan also gave the Sentra a performance-oriented side through the Sentra SR Turbo and the Sentra Nismo. The SR Turbo used a 188-horsepower turbocharged 1.6-liter engine with sporty tuning for the suspension, steering, and brakes, while the Nismo added the same turbocharged engine along with a stiffened chassis, a sports interior with grippy seating surfaces, and the choice of a six-speed manual or a CVT. That combination made the 2017 Sentra unusual in a segment where many buyers were focused mainly on value and efficiency.
At the same time, the 2017 Sentra still had some limitations that buyers should keep in mind. The broader seventh-generation lineup was known for its CVT-related complaints, and the model’s appeal was strongest when viewed as a comfortable, efficient compact car rather than a class leader in excitement. Even so, its mix of practicality, available performance trims, and strong fuel economy made it a distinctive choice for shoppers who wanted a sensible sedan with a little extra personality.

Was my first car purchase. Everything I could want in a compact sedan for myself. Only got rid out if because the transmission blew out. Wouldnt get another due to Nissan specifically CVT Transmissions.

This car is very nice and amazing for a single person needing it for personal use. The gas mileage is great, if youre not planning to drive to many places other than work or the store. Highly recommend this car if you find one in good condition.

Is the 2017 Nissan Sentra reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback highlights a reliable and efficient compact sedan that many drivers feel good about keeping for the long haul. The same feedback also points to trouble-free ownership for many shoppers, especially when the car has been maintained well. At the same time, you should pay close attention to transmission history, since that is the main long-term ownership risk for used buyers.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Nissan Sentra?
At 50.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. Then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, with extra attention to the transmission and overall mechanical condition. It also makes sense to focus on signs of consistent maintenance and any evidence that the car has been used as a commuter rather than neglected.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Nissan Sentra?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 963 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.14% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 50.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $8,933.51, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Nissan Sentra's resale value?
The current average of $9,241 sits slightly below last year's $9,640.
That softer pricing can help you buy more carefully now, but it also means future resale gains may be limited if the market stays soft. For a seller, the current trend suggests you should expect value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and maintenance history. Clean examples with strong presentation should hold up better than average ones because buyers are already price-sensitive.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Nissan Sentra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 50.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.14% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $7,822, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $9,241 average.
- It brings refreshed styling and interior updates.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2017 if you want the stronger overall market signal and are willing to inspect carefully for condition and history. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2016 is the better value path, especially if you find one with a clean record and solid maintenance.
