Is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder a good car?

Generally — the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder earns a 4.4/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

Is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder reliable?

Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free feel for many shoppers, with comfort and spaciousness standing out as reasons people feel good about living with it over time. The expert assessment also describes it as a smart choice as an all-around family-friendly vehicle, and notes that it is well-rounded rather than excelling in just one area.

It also offers a 3-year, 36,000-mile basic warranty and a 5-year, 60,000-mile powertrain warranty, which helps support ownership confidence. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure prior steering or tire-wear concerns haven’t become expensive maintenance issues.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Nissan Pathfinder?

At 56% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Focus on signs of prior body damage, uneven tire wear, and any steering-related issues, since those are the kinds of concerns that can affect long-term ownership costs. It also makes sense to compare condition carefully across listings, because the price spread is wide enough that a cleaner example may be worth paying for.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S includes the 8-inch touchscreen, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, roof rails, push-button start, remote keyless entry, a reversing camera, Bluetooth, and three-zone automatic climate control. The SV adds smart auto-on headlights, fog lights, remote start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift-knob, and reversing backup sensors. The SL adds a 360-degree camera system, leather seating and door trim, heated front and rear seats, a blind-spot warning system, and a motion-activated liftgate. The Platinum adds a dual-panel panoramic moonroof, navigation with real-time traffic, heated and cooled front seats, a forward-collision-avoidance system, and adaptive cruise control.
• Powertrain: It uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 284 horsepower, paired with a continuously variable transmission and front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive. The V6 is described as close to necessary for a vehicle this size, and the AWD system includes selectable drive modes plus hill-start assist and hill-descent control.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes front and side impact airbags, Vehicle Dynamics Control with traction control, front and rear crumple zones, LATCH child-seat anchors, tire pressure monitoring, and Easy-Fill Tire Alert. The available driver-assistance tech includes forward-collision warning, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert, and those systems are described as Superior by the IIHS.
• Infotainment: The standard screen is 8 inches, and higher trims add navigation with real-time traffic and weather. You get redundant controls, USB ports, and Bluetooth calling, but there is no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
• Fuel efficiency: The available all-wheel-drive system can be switched to 2-wheel drive for better fuel economy, but no MPG figure is stated here.

Which 2017 Nissan Pathfinder trim should I buy?

The 2017 Nissan Pathfinder is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SV, SL, Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the value play if you want the Pathfinder’s core family-hauler strengths without paying for extras. You still get the 8-inch touchscreen, reversing camera, Bluetooth, three-zone climate control, and the basic convenience features that make daily use easy.
• SV: This is the trim to target if you want a better balance of price and equipment. It adds remote start, fog lights, auto-on headlights, and backup sensors, which make it feel meaningfully more complete without jumping too far up the price ladder.
• SL: This is the best-value upgrade if you want the Pathfinder to feel properly equipped for family duty. The 360-degree camera, blind-spot warning, heated seats, leather trim, and motion-activated liftgate add a lot of everyday usefulness.
• Platinum: Choose this if you want the most upscale Pathfinder experience. It brings navigation, a panoramic moonroof, heated and cooled front seats, and the forward-collision-avoidance system plus adaptive cruise control.

The safety-tech highlights are strongest on the SL and Platinum trims, while the base S keeps the essentials but skips the more advanced driver-assistance features.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Nissan Pathfinder?

This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you have room to shop but should still move quickly on strong listings.

• Deal availability: 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 804 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.45% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 56.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $10,316, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder's resale value?

The current average of $10,316 sits slightly below last year's $11,521.

That price movement suggests the Pathfinder has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you may have a better chance of limiting further value loss. Clean history and well-documented maintenance matter more when a model is already trading below its prior-year average.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder safe?

The 2017 Nissan Pathfinder earns five-star ratings in NHTSA crash testing and is a Top Safety Pick from IIHS.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes front and side impact airbags, Vehicle Dynamics Control with traction control, front and rear crumple zones, LATCH child-seat anchors, tire pressure monitoring, and Easy-Fill Tire Alert. Available driver-assistance tech includes forward-collision warning, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert, and those systems are described as Superior by IIHS.

Should I buy a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 32.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 56% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.45% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 update brings stronger V6 power, updated styling, and more available safety tech.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $9,166, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,316 average.
• It is practical and easy to live with.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2017 is the better buy thanks to its updated powertrain, equipment, and safety story. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 can still make sense as a simpler, lower-cost alternative.

How does the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder compare to the 2017 Honda Pilot?

Our experts score the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder 7.8/10 and the 2017 Honda Pilot 7.2/10.

The Pathfinder gives you more horsepower and a lower average used price, while the Pilot brings a larger listing pool and a slightly higher share of good and great deals. The Pathfinder also has the edge in city fuel economy, but the Pilot is a stronger value if you want more inventory to choose from and a slightly cleaner accident-free mix.
