CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Nissan Pathfinder
overall

Summary
With 56 currently listed for sale near Dallas, TX and an average price of $10,534, 23.2% of 2017 Nissan Pathfinders for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder 4.4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
76.8% of 2017 Pathfinder models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Nissan Pathfinder stands out as a family-focused SUV that bridges the gap between minivans and more rugged 4x4s. It is designed to handle family-hauling duty while still offering all-wheel-drive capability when needed, which gives it a broader appeal than a typical people mover. Its car-based platform also helps explain why it emphasizes space and everyday usability rather than old-school truck toughness.
What makes the Pathfinder distinctive is how far it has moved from its earlier, more rugged roots. By 2017, it was part of the fourth generation and had been completely redesigned on a platform shared with the Altima, Quest, Maxima, and others. That change allowed Nissan to maximize interior room, resulting in plenty of cargo and passenger space. For buyers, that combination of comfort, practicality, and available all-wheel drive is the Pathfinder’s main draw.
At the same time, the 2017 Pathfinder is not presented as the most rugged SUV in its class, and that is part of the tradeoff. It is less truck-like than it once was, but it can still do everything that is asked of a family hauler. Owners also tend to praise its comfort, features, spaciousness, smooth performance, and good gas mileage, though some have raised concerns about steering issues and tire wear.

Very well equipped SUV. I love the fact that it has third row seating (that actually seems quite comfortable for short trips). The gas mileage on this is great for an older full-size SUV (25 mpg avg according to tripometer). The SL and Platinum both had leather interior, which is really nice and the seats were very comfortable. A great car for traveling!

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of prior bodywork or uneven wear. Because this model is often bought as a family hauler, it’s worth paying close attention to how well the interior, tires, and steering-related components have held up.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S trim includes the 8-inch touchscreen, 18-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, roof rails, push-button start, remote keyless entry, a reversing camera, Bluetooth, and three-zone automatic climate control. The SV adds smart auto-on headlights, fog lights, remote start, HomeLink, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and backup sensors. The SL adds a 360-degree camera, leather seating and door trim, heated front and rear seats, a blind-spot warning system, and a motion-activated liftgate. The Platinum adds 20-inch wheels, upgraded LED projector headlights, a panoramic moonroof, navigation, heated and cooled front seats, a forward-collision-avoidance system, and adaptive cruise control.
- Powertrain: The Pathfinder uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 284 horsepower and a CVT. It can be driven in front-wheel drive or available all-wheel drive, and the system includes selectable drive modes plus hill-start assist and hill-descent control. The setup is tuned more for family use and traction than for rugged truck-style off-roading.
- Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes front and side impact airbags, Vehicle Dynamics Control with traction control, front and rear crumple zones, LATCH, tire pressure monitoring, and Easy-Fill Tire Alert. The Pathfinder earns a Top Safety Pick from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA. Forward-collision warning, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert are available on higher trims and are rated Superior by IIHS.
- Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8-inch touchscreen with physical controls below it. Navigation is available on more expensive versions, and the Platinum adds navigation with real-time traffic and weather. It does not have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto.
- Fuel efficiency: The Pathfinder can switch to 2-wheel drive for better fuel economy, but no MPG figure is stated.
Which 2017 Nissan Pathfinder trim should I buy?
The 2017 Nissan Pathfinder is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SV, SL, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the value play if you want the core Pathfinder experience at the lowest entry price. You still get the 8-inch touchscreen, a reversing camera, Bluetooth, three-zone climate control, and the basic family-friendly equipment that makes the model useful right away.
- SV: This is the trim to consider if you want a better everyday feature mix without jumping too far in price. It adds remote start, fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and backup sensors, which makes it the best-value choice for many shoppers.
- SL: This is the step up if you want a more upscale and confidence-inspiring cabin. The 360-degree camera, leather seating, heated front and rear seats, blind-spot warning, and motion-activated liftgate make it a strong pick for families who plan to keep the SUV for a while.
- Platinum: This is the right choice if you want the most equipment and are willing to pay for it. It adds navigation, a panoramic moonroof, heated and cooled front seats, adaptive cruise control, and forward-collision avoidance, so it suits buyers who want the most comfort and tech.
The safety package is strongest on the higher trims, where the available driver-assistance features expand beyond the standard equipment.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Nissan Pathfinder?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 822 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.03% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 54.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,799, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder's resale value?
The current average of $10,799 sits slightly below last year's $11,615.
That price movement suggests the model has softened, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at a strong price and keep the vehicle in good condition, you can reduce the impact of that depreciation. The current market also shows enough inventory to give you some negotiating room.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Nissan Pathfinder safe?
The 2017 Nissan Pathfinder earns a Top Safety Pick from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes front and side impact airbags, Vehicle Dynamics Control with traction control, front and rear crumple zones, LATCH, tire pressure monitoring, and Easy-Fill Tire Alert. Higher trims add available driver-assistance features such as forward-collision warning, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. Those features are rated Superior by IIHS.
Should I buy a 2017 Nissan Pathfinder or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 54.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.03% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 brings a refreshed look, a stronger 284-horsepower V6, and a well-rounded family-hauler setup.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $9,540, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,799 average.
- It is practical and easy to live with.
The bottom line: If you want the better-equipped and more current-feeling Pathfinder, the 2017 is the stronger pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly path, especially if you can live with a more mixed overall impression.
