Why it stands out
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class stands out as a compact luxury sedan that blends comfort, performance, price, and snob appeal in a way that has made it Mercedes-Benz’s best-selling model in the U.S. The car’s appeal is rooted in that balanced formula: it offers the kind of polished driving experience and upscale image buyers expect from a German luxury sedan, while remaining accessible enough to attract a broad audience.
For 2017, the C-Class was described as offering more of the same, which is a strength in itself when the formula is already working well. Drivers are drawn to its powerful performance, stylish design, and luxurious features, and many also appreciate its responsiveness and comfort on the road. At the same time, some owners note that maintenance costs can be high, and taller passengers may find the cabin a bit cramped.

Reviewed a 2017 Mercedes-Benz AMG C 63 S Coupe on Apr 11, 2023
The c63s is one of the best cars Ive ever driven. The steering, throttle response and brakes are all amazing. The suspension is extremely rough, even compared to cars like the F-type. However the driving experience makes the bumpy ride worth it. It has a great interior with a good sized trunk. The back seats are small, but much larger than a LC500. If youre in the market for a fast and fun car definitely pick one up. Its an amazing car with an amazing hand-built V8 that will last. Id definitely take a C63 coupe over a F-type, DB11, Hellcat, M4, M8, Gt350 and almost every car in the segment. (Below the Lc500 though) Overall a great car you should pick up if its in your budget.

The Mercedes Benz C Coupe sets itself aside from its sedan version. In fact, despite having the same nameplate, and badging, it is an entirely different car. Kudos to the sedan, no doubt, but the Coupe just epitomizes the right balance between pure luxury and pure sport. It is pleasant to find how well it does both in equal parts. Beautifully styled inside and out, it offers upgrades as standard that are options with the sedan. Drives enthusiastically, precisely, and comfortably. This model year is where the depreciation has its full effect and is quite affordable. It puts a smile on my face just by gazing at it, let alone what it does when I get behind the wheel.

Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class earns a 4.5/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Drivers consistently praise its powerful performance, stylish design, and luxurious features, and many also call out its responsiveness and comfort. The overview points to a compact luxury sedan that blends comfort, performance, and technology, which fits the way this car is positioned for you if you want a refined daily driver with a premium feel. With 31.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that feels powerful, comfortable, and enjoyable to drive, while also describing it as a model many owners are happy to live with over time. The expert notes also emphasize that the C-Class does so many things right that it is hard to choose a better compact luxury sedan, which supports the idea that it can be a dependable long-term pick when maintained properly. Mercedes also includes a broad set of standard safety systems, which adds confidence for used buyers who plan to keep the car for years. The main ownership risk is that maintenance costs can run high, so you should budget carefully before buying.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?
At 56.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had multiple owners or shows signs of uneven wear. Focus on condition first: check for evidence of prior bodywork, verify that all electronics work properly, and make sure the car drives as tightly as it should. Because some owners mention a leaky fuel line in certain models, it is worth paying close attention to underhood and undercarriage condition.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base version includes Agility Control, while the Luxury version uses softer-tuned dampers and smaller 17-inch tires. The Sport package adds a more aggressive setup, and the Airmatic air suspension is the most comfort-focused option.
- Powertrain: The C300 uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 7-speed automatic and available rear- or 4Matic all-wheel drive. It is quick enough for everyday use, but it is not as satisfying as the previous V6-powered setup, and fuel economy is only average.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, rear side thorax-level airbags, stability control that can compensate for crosswinds, an attention monitor, and rain-drying brake logic. Optional features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus.
- Infotainment: A 7-inch central screen is standard with Bluetooth, HD Radio, and two USB ports. The 8.4-inch screen adds navigation, map updates, and SiriusXM traffic and weather data, while the COMAND system also brings an integrated owner’s manual, animations, and customized shortcuts. Wireless smartphone integration is not mentioned.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates rear-wheel-drive models at 34 mpg highway, while 4Matic models are rated at 24 mpg city and 31 highway. In testing, the car averaged 23 mpg over 620 miles.
Which 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class trim should I buy?
The 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is offered in 1 trim level: C300.
Here's the short version:
The C300 is the trim to focus on because it is the core model described here and the one most dealers stock. It gives you the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, the standard safety suite, and the luxury feel that defines this model year, while still leaving room to add tech and comfort options if you want them. If you want the best balance of price and features, start here and then shop carefully for the packages that matter most to you.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?
The market looks selective rather than overheated, which gives you room to compare listings and wait for the right car.
- Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,962 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.41% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,358.58, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class's resale value?
The current average of $17,358 sits slightly below last year's $19,160.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer now but may temper what you recover later as a seller. If you buy at the right price and keep the car in strong condition, you can still protect value better than someone who pays near the top of the range. The model's strong owner satisfaction should help support demand when it is time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class safe?
The 2017 C-Class has a five-star rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and top ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which tested a 2016 model and gave it the Top Safety Pick+ award.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Mercedes includes a broad standard safety package here, including rear side thorax-level airbags, forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, stability control that can help manage crosswinds, an attention monitor, and rain-drying brake logic. Optional upgrades add blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus. For used buyers, the main thing to watch is whether the car has the safety features you want, since some of the more advanced driver-assistance items are optional.
Should I buy a 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.41% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- More of the same—and that’s a very good thing.
The bottom line: If you want a compact luxury sedan with strong owner satisfaction, a lower average price than last year, and a well-rounded mix of comfort, performance, and safety, the 2017 C-Class is a sensible target. If you are especially price-sensitive, keep shopping and compare nearby model years, but this one already looks attractive if you can find a clean example with the right options.
