The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the C-Class does many things right for a compact luxury sedan, which supports the idea that it can be a dependable choice when maintained properly. The maintenance-cost concern and the note about a leaky fuel line in some models mean you should pay close attention to service history and ownership records before you buy.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?

At 55.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or multiple owners. Focus on signs of uneven panel gaps, paint mismatch, interior wear, and any evidence of neglected maintenance, since those issues can matter more than mileage alone on a used luxury sedan.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The cabin is described as upscale and expressive, with a soothing atmosphere of traditional luxury, high tech, and sporting pretensions. The base version is noted for its standard setup, while the Luxury version swaps in a thinner upright chrome grille and a hood ornament, so you should pay attention to which appearance and comfort details you want.
• Powertrain: You get a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 241 horsepower and 273 pound-feet of torque, paired with a 7-speed automatic and available rear-wheel drive or 4Matic all-wheel drive. The car is described as strong in everyday driving, with plenty of shove and a calm Comfort mode.
• Safety package: The standard safety suite includes rear side thorax-level airbags, stability control that can compensate for crosswinds, forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, an attention monitor, and brake-drying behavior in the rain. Optional features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus.
• Infotainment: A 7-inch central screen is standard with Bluetooth, HD Radio, and two USB ports. The 8.4-inch screen adds navigation, map updates, and SiriusXM traffic and weather data, and the system also includes voice recognition and an in-car Wi-Fi hotspot.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates rear-wheel-drive models at 34 mpg highway, while 4Matic models are rated at 24 mpg city and 31 mpg highway. A calculated 23 mpg was recorded over a long test, which suggests real-world results can vary.

Which 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class trim should I buy?

The 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is offered in 1 trim level: C300.

Here's the short version:

The C300 is the trim to focus on because it’s the core version you’ll see most often, and it delivers the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, the balanced chassis, and the luxury feel that define this model year. It suits you best if you want the standard C-Class experience without chasing higher-priced performance variants or heavily optioned examples. The safety package is strong across the lineup, with standard forward-collision alert with auto-braking and Pre-Safe, while blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus remain optional.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,903 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.38% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 55.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,254, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class's resale value?

The current average of $17,381 sits slightly below last year's $18,765.

That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. For a future seller, the key is to avoid overpaying now, because your eventual resale outcome will depend heavily on how much room you leave between purchase price and market value. Strong condition, clean history, and documented maintenance should matter more than chasing a higher-mileage bargain.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class safe?

The 2017 C-Class has a five-star rating by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and top ratings by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, which tested a 2016 model and gave it the Top Safety Pick+ award.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard safety suite includes rear side thorax-level airbags, stability control that can compensate for crosswinds, forward-collision alert with auto-braking, Pre-Safe, and an attention monitor. Optional safety features include blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, pedestrian detection, cross-traffic alerts, and Pre-Safe Plus. That said, you should still verify which driver-assistance features are actually fitted on the used car you’re considering, since some are optional rather than standard.

Should I buy a 2017 Mercedes-Benz C-Class or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.38% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• More of the same is presented as a strength for this year, with the car continuing to deliver the blend of comfort, performance, price, and prestige that defines the model.

The bottom line: If you want a compact luxury sedan that already reflects a softer used-car market and still brings strong owner satisfaction, the 2017 is a sensible choice. If you’re especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and shop for the cleanest, best-maintained example rather than focusing only on model year.
