Is the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata reliable?

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata?

At 64% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, panel alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because this car is often bought for enjoyment, it is smart to focus on how well the top, interior, and mechanicals have held up rather than just the odometer reading. If you are considering a higher-trim car, make sure the added equipment still works as intended.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The roadster lineup includes Sport, Club, and Grand Touring, while the RF skips the base Sport trim and starts with Club. The Sport trim gives you push-button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob, a USB port, and Bluetooth hands-free calling and streaming music, while the Club adds the 7-inch Mazda Connect screen, a 9-speaker Bose audio system, dual USB ports, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The Grand Touring adds leather heated sport seats, navigation, and lane-departure warning, and the Launch Edition RF adds an exclusive black roof, Machine Grey Metallic paint, and Auburn Nappa leather interior.
• Powertrain: Every version uses a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine with 155 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. Power goes to the rear wheels through a 6-speed manual or available 6-speed automatic, and the automatic brings better highway fuel economy at 35 mpg versus 33 mpg with the manual.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags, rollover bar construction, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The Club and RF Club add blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic monitoring, while the Grand Touring adds lane-departure warning and adaptive front headlights. Base-trim buyers miss out on those extra driver aids.
• Infotainment: The Mazda Connect system uses a 7-inch screen on Club and above, with Bluetooth, stereo controls, and navigation available on higher trims. The screen becomes a touchscreen only when you come to a complete stop, so you should make sure the interface feels intuitive to you.
• Fuel efficiency: The manual transmission returns 26 mpg city and 33 mpg highway, while the automatic gets 26 mpg city and 35 mpg highway.

Which 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata trim should I buy?

The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata is offered in 6 trim levels: Sport, Club, Grand Touring, Club, Grand Touring, Launch Edition.

Here's the short version:

• Sport: This is the value play if you want the purest, least expensive way into the Miata experience. It gives you the core driving hardware plus push-button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob, USB connectivity, and Bluetooth, so it suits you best if you care more about the driving feel than extra tech or luxury.
• Club: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the 7-inch Mazda Connect screen, a 9-speaker Bose audio system, dual USB ports, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. If you want a better balance of everyday usability and equipment, this is the trim to target.
• Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the most comfort-focused version, with leather heated sport seats, navigation, lane-departure warning, and adaptive front headlights. It makes the Miata feel more upscale, but you should buy it only if those extras matter to you.
• Launch Edition: This RF-only version is for you if you want the most distinctive appearance package, with an exclusive black roof, Machine Grey Metallic paint, and Auburn Nappa leather interior. It is the most special-looking choice, but it is more about exclusivity than added everyday value.

The Club and RF Club include blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic monitoring, while the Grand Touring adds lane-departure warning and adaptive front headlights.

That modest increase suggests the market has held up well, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. Should I buy a 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 30.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 64% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.56% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The RF adds a retractable hardtop, giving this year broader appeal and more versatility than a typical roadster.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $18,981, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $20,781 average.
• It emphasizes value, performance, engineering, and design in a more affordable package.

The bottom line: Buy the 2017 if you want the stronger mix of features, versatility, and market support. If your priority is saving money, the 2016 is the better budget path, especially if you are willing to give up some of the 2017's added appeal.
