CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata
overall

Summary
With 205 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,800.00, 30.2% of 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miatas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata 4.62 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
61.0% of 2017 MX-5 Miata models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata stands out in the affordable performance crowd because it blends playful driving with a level of refinement that some rivals can’t match. It competes with the Fiat 124 Spider, MINI Cooper, Subaru BRZ, and Toyota 86, and it is presented as a car that delivers plenty of corner-carving ability at the same price as a well-equipped commuter car. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want something fun without moving into a more expensive sports car.
Its most distinctive trait is the availability of coupe or power retractable hardtop body styles, something its rivals do not offer. The Miata RF, or “Retractable Fastback,” is described as a retractable hardtop, but also as more than that, which gives the car a unique place among small performance cars. Owners also praise its fun driving experience, adept handling, sporty appearance, comfortable interior, and modern amenities.
There are a few tradeoffs to keep in mind. Some drivers would like more power and storage space, and a few noted the absence of features like a backup camera. Even so, the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata’s mix of driving enjoyment, refinement, and uncommon roof options is what makes it especially distinctive.

The Mx5 is a fun little car to drive. Its very small, light, and nimble. The steering is very tight and responsive, as is the throttle and transmission. Its not a car for someone who wants a lot of room. If youre over 6 , or have a large frame, I would advise a test fit, but at 510 -165lbs theres enough room for me to be comfortable, even on 4 hr + road trips. Its rated at 155 bhp, so its not going to keep up with a porsche boxster or a vette,, but it definitely isnt gutless. The sport mode is a little jumpy dor my taste as a daily drive, but I do use it in winding hills where Im not going to be needing 5th and 6th gear, as it rarely shifts above 4th in sport. The paddle shifters and manual mode console shift on the auto trans is quick to respond when you tell it to shift. Theres little to no lag. The gearing is low enough that it feels punchy and quick on takeoff, but the higher gears are very well suited to highway driving at 75-80mph setting in around 200-2200 rpm. He suspension os stiff enoughbto keep the car flat during spirited cornering, but soft enough to keep the ride from being bumpy. It reminds me of a racing gocart, but with a much nicer ride. Theres not a lot in the way of storage space with only 1 real compartment in the cabin thats situated between the seats on the back wall. There are 2 other small compartments, but you have to pull the seats forward to access them so they arent usable for anything you need without parking the car. The trunk is about what youd expect for a small 2 seater. Theres enough room for a duffel or overnight bag, if you want to take a weekend trip. The seats are comfortable, but not luxurious. I feel they could use a little more padding in the bottom and backrest, but it isnt hard by any stretch of the imagination. The engine is audible and the exhaust sporty sounding (for a 4 cyl) at higher rpms but not so much as to be annoying. You dont hear the engine at highway cruising speeds or when just easing around town, but when you throttle it, it says hello. On the highway all youll hear is the wind and your radio, as it should be. The little 2.0l 4 cylinder GDI engine with VVT is is extremely economical, coming in at nearly 40mpg on my highway trips, and I dont drive like your mother. It usually show me around 25-28mpg in town, too. The 11.9 gal fuel tank is cheap to fill and lasts a good bit longer than Ive been accustomed to in the past. All around I give it 4.5 out of 5 stars, only subtracting that .5 because i think it could stand a little more leg room and the cup holder situation is a bit odd.

Love this car. 2017 with 20k miles. Buying used saved me a lot of money. So much fun to drive! I love the dynamics of a manual transmission. I’m 6’1” and it fits me like a glove. Soul red with black top and tan leather is a beautiful color combination . I did my homework and the price I got at the dealer was well below market. Only one thing I miss is a back up camera, but it has rear cross traffic alert which is more important in my opinion. I also have an SUV so no back seat or significant storage is not a big concern.

FUN-FUN-FUN!!! Mazda has done such a great job with this very small car. Looks like a sports car should. Feels like a sports car should. Handles like a sports car should. Comfortable interior with plenty of modern amenities.

Is the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata earns a 4.62/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Cost effectiveness.
Owners consistently praise the fun driving experience, adept handling, sporty appearance, comfortable interior, and modern amenities. The car also stands out for its playful, corner-carving character and its uncommon coupe or power retractable hardtop body style, which gives you more choice than many rivals in this class.

Is the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.62/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The expert evaluation also emphasizes the Miata’s refinement and its ability to deliver a rewarding driving experience without feeling overly complicated.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about complexity and more about finding a well-kept example that hasn’t been neglected or modified poorly.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata?
At 65.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, roof operation, and interior condition. Because some listings have accident history, it’s smart to focus on signs of prior repair quality, uneven wear, and any issues that could affect the car’s usability or value.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The roadster Sport trim is the entry point and includes push-button start, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter knob, a USB port, and Bluetooth hands-free calling and streaming music. The Club adds the 7-inch Mazda Connect infotainment screen, a 9-speaker Bose audio system, dual USB ports, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The Grand Touring adds leather heated sport seats, a navigation system, and a lane-departure warning system.
- Powertrain: Every version uses a 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder with 155 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. The manual transmission is described as smooth and direct, while the automatic is the better pick if you want slightly better highway fuel economy.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, rollover bar construction, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic monitoring come on the Club and RF Club, while lane-departure warning and adaptive front headlights appear on the Grand Touring test version.
- Infotainment: The Mazda Connect system uses a 7-inch screen on the Club, and the interface is controlled primarily by a dial. The screen becomes a touchscreen only when you come to a complete stop.
- Fuel efficiency: Both transmissions return 26 mpg city and 29 mpg combined. The automatic gets 35 mpg highway, while the manual gets 33 mpg highway.
Which 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata trim should I buy?
The 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Club, Grand Touring, and Launch Edition.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The Sport roadster is the value play, but it lacks the Club’s blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, plus the larger infotainment setup and upgraded audio.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Club is the best balance if you want the added safety tech and the 7-inch Mazda Connect screen without jumping to the pricier luxury-focused trims.
- Premium/top trim: The Grand Touring is the most comfort-oriented choice, adding leather heated sport seats, navigation, and lane-departure warning.
- Off-road trim: The RF and higher trims are more about style and weather protection than daily-driver practicality, so they make sense only if you really want the retractable hardtop experience.
The Club and RF Club are the trims with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic monitoring, which is a useful safety-package note if you want extra confidence in a small sports car.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 217 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.22% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 65.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,426.10, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata's resale value?
The current average of $20,535 sits slightly below last year's $21,439.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a little more favorable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now and keep the car in strong condition, you may be better positioned when it’s time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.62/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes a full array of front- and side-impact airbags, rollover bar construction, and a tire pressure monitoring system. The Club and RF Club add blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic monitoring, while the Grand Touring test version adds lane-departure warning and adaptive front headlights that turn with the steering wheel.
One notable drawback is the lack of a reversing camera, which is a meaningful omission for a small car with limited rear visibility. If safety tech matters to you, the Club and RF Club are the trims that add the most useful driver-assistance features.
Should I buy a 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 65.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.22% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.62/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 stands out for its coupe or power retractable hardtop body styles and its blend of refinement and fun.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $19,356, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $20,535 average.
- It delivers value, performance, engineering, and design in a highly accessible package.
The bottom line: If you want the most distinctive roof choice and a well-rounded mix of fun and refinement, the 2017 is the stronger pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the better value-oriented alternative.
