CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Mazda MAZDA3
overall

Summary
With 688 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,404, 28.2% of 2017 Mazda MAZDA3s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 4.83 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.5 / 10.
52.3% of 2017 MAZDA3 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 stands out as a compact car that blends style, value, and driving enjoyment. For 2017, it received its first real update since this generation debuted back in 2013, with design changes inside and out and new G-Vectoring Control, making an already strong package even more appealing and fun to drive. Mazda’s reputation for stylish cars with beautiful interiors comes through here as well, and the Mazda3 is presented as a car that looks and feels more expensive than it is.
It also has broad appeal because it offers plenty of features even in the base version, along with well-priced options that let buyers tailor the car to their budget. Owner feedback reinforces the Mazda3’s sporty feel, responsive acceleration, fuel efficiency, stylish interior, and user-friendly technology. At the same time, some drivers want more features and systems to better match competitors, so the car’s strengths are balanced by a sense that it may not be the most generously equipped choice in the class.

The vehicle was priced well with all the features anyone could ever need. The interior seems to be better quality than others in its class over all a good made vehicle.

When my Honda died some 10 years ago or so, I somehow stumbled upon the Mazda3 (I think it was the Car & Driver reviews), and bought one. That car is the most fabulous car in its price range that I have ever driven. I adored it. I bought a 2008 sGT, and drove it with nothing but the greatest pleasure until it gave up its life for me about a month ago. There will be no coming back from this injury, but I promise you, I am currently looking for this car, and ONLY this car, for my next car, and however many next cars I have after this one. Ne plus ultra.

This car certainly has a LOT of zip, and thats not even using the Sport Mode! Plus, it gets great mpg and has a good shot of making it to 250k miles.

There are 693 listings available, which gives you a modest amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?
Yes — 4.83/5 from owners, and the expert rating is 8.5/10. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the sporty feel, responsive acceleration, fuel efficiency, stylish interior, and user-friendly technology. The car also fits buyers who want a compact model that feels more premium than its price suggests, with plenty of features even in the base version and well-priced options to tailor it to your budget.
Only 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market is not especially generous right now.
Is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car people can count on for sporty driving, fuel efficiency, and a generally dependable ownership experience. The expert evaluation also emphasizes a composed, secure drive, with responsive power delivery, solid steering, and a ride that stays calm even in hard braking and rough weather.
The cost-effectiveness coverage adds that coverage includes a 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile limited powertrain warranty, and 3 years/36,000 miles of roadside assistance. For used buyers, that means the main long-term risk is less about the car’s core appeal and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not worn hard.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mazda MAZDA3?
At 53% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or visible cosmetic wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the equipment level matches what you expect from the trim you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Sport includes daytime running lights, tire pressure monitoring, dynamic stability control, traction control, air conditioning, remote keyless entry, cruise control, and the Mazda Connect infotainment system. Touring adds heated side mirrors, dual-zone climate control, a power driver’s seat, heated front seats, leather-wrapped touch points, and leatherette-trimmed sport seats, while Grand Touring adds the more powerful engine, LED fog lights, a rear spoiler, perforated leather-trimmed sport seats, and a power moonroof.
- Powertrain: You get a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 155 hp and 150 lb-ft of torque in the lower trims, or a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder with 184 hp and 185 lb-ft of torque in Grand Touring. Both engines are paired with either a 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic transmission.
- Safety package: Touring and Grand Touring add advanced blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support, Mazda's version of automatic emergency braking. The base trim does not include those features.
- Infotainment: The system uses a 7-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth handsfree phone and audio streaming, Mazda Connect, SiriusXM with a 4-month trial, voice command, AM/FM/HD Radio, SMS text-message audio delivery and reply, two USB ports, and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are not available.
- Fuel efficiency: The base engine is rated at 27 mpg city and 37 highway with the manual or 28/37 with the automatic. The 2.5-liter engine returns 25/34 with the manual or 27/36 with the automatic, and the available i-ELOOP package can improve the automatic to 28/37.
Which 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?
The 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the value play if you want the lowest entry price and still want a well-equipped car with the core Mazda3 experience. It gives you the essentials, the standard infotainment system, and the same manual or automatic transmission choice as the higher trims.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the comfort and safety upgrades that make daily driving easier, including heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and Smart City Brake Support.
- Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the strongest performance and the most upscale feel, with the 2.5-liter engine, leather-trimmed sport seats, a moonroof, and the upgraded Bose audio system.
Touring and Grand Touring are the trims with the added safety package features.

What is the 2017 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?
The current average of $13,442 sits slightly above last year's $12,858.
That upward move suggests the market has been willing to pay more for this model year, which is a positive sign if you plan to sell later. A car that holds demand while staying relatively affordable can be easier to move when it’s time to trade in or list privately.
Strong owner satisfaction also helps support future demand. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2017 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices are up 4.54% year-over-year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Mazda’s 2017 update adds G-Vectoring Control and a more polished interior, which strengthens the car’s already sporty appeal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $12,027, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $13,442 average.
- It makes driving feel engaging without turning the experience harsh or tiring.
The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded version of this compact car, the 2017 is the stronger pick because it adds meaningful updates and still delivers strong value. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the better budget path, especially if you find one in clean condition with good maintenance history.
