CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 1,783 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,089.00, 32.7% of 2017 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Mazda CX-5 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
65.5% of 2017 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Mazda CX-5 stands out by aiming for a sporty, upscale personality rather than trying to appeal to everyone in the compact crossover market. In a segment with many different personalities, it is presented as the kind of SUV for a buyer who wants something more engaging than the usual commuter choice and a little nicer than the average crossover, without needing to move into a luxury brand.
What makes it especially distinctive is that it is described as fun to drive and uniquely upscale for its class. That combination gives it a clear identity among compact SUVs that are often more practical than exciting. It also fits buyers who want more space than a sedan but still care about driving enjoyment.
At the same time, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 is not framed as the most spacious or most powerful option, and some owners wished for more cargo space and more power. Even so, its stylish design, smooth ride, comfortable handling, fuel economy, and strong reliability help explain why it appeals to shoppers looking for a crossover with a more polished feel.

I bought this car to replace the same model that I lost in an accident. It was a year older and a lower trim. This trim is the premium trim and it’s nice. It has a heads up display full of seats. The steering wheel warms up memory seats and it runs like a dream. I really enjoy driving this car..

I bought the sport, base model, and for being a base model the features are pretty good. The only thing I wish I had, was rear vents for the AC.

| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,165 |

| Year-Round High | $16,604.59 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,582 |

Prices have softened 2.51% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,747 listings available, which suggests you have room to compare options.
If you find a listing below $15,159.06, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — 4.7/5 owners rate it, and the expert rating is 7.33/10. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the stylish design, smooth ride, and excellent reliability. Many also like the comfortable handling and fuel economy, especially on long trips. The CX-5 fits you well if you want a compact SUV that feels more upscale and more engaging to drive than the average crossover.
With 32.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive buying opportunities.
Is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to excellent reliability, and it also highlights a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience. The driving notes reinforce that impression by describing the CX-5 as composed and confidence-inspiring over time, with strong everyday usability. If you want a used SUV you can count on, this one has the kind of reputation that matters.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure the specific vehicle you choose has been maintained well and hasn’t been neglected.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mazda CX-5?
At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually strong. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of prior bodywork or uneven wear. Because this model year has a sizable share of accident history in the market, the individual car’s condition matters more than the badge on the tailgate.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Sport trim comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, power side mirrors, a reversing camera, keyless entry, push-button start, dual USB ports, MazdaConnect infotainment, and Bluetooth hands-free calling. Touring adds leatherette seating, auto-leveling headlights, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rear USB ports, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, rear climate control vents, and Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry. Grand Touring adds 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, adaptive headlights, LED fog lights, heated side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, a power moonroof, a power rear liftgate, full leather seating, an 8-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support, navigation, auto-dimming mirrors, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a 10-speaker Bose premium stereo.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available. Fuel economy is 24 mpg city, 31 highway, and 27 combined with FWD, or 23 city, 30 highway, and 26 combined with AWD.
- Safety package: Smart City Brake Support is standard, and it can pre-charge the brakes and automatically engage them at low speeds if needed. Touring adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Grand Touring adds adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. The more advanced driver-assistance features are not standard on the base trim.
- Infotainment: MazdaConnect uses a 7-inch screen controlled by a rotary dial, though it does have touch capability when parked. It does not support Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
- Fuel efficiency: The FWD model returns 24 mpg city, 31 highway, and 27 combined, while AWD versions return 23 city, 30 highway, and 26 combined.
Which 2017 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2017 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: Sport gives you the essentials, but you miss out on the extra comfort and driver-assistance features found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: Touring is the best value if you want a more complete daily driver, since it adds heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rear USB ports, leatherette seating, and blind-spot monitoring.
- Premium/top trim: Grand Touring is the one to choose if you want the most upscale CX-5, with leather seating, navigation, a Bose stereo, a power liftgate, adaptive headlights, and automatic emergency braking.
The safety-package progression is important here: Smart City Brake Support is standard, while the more advanced features arrive as you move up the trim ladder.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough deal activity to reward patience.
- Deal availability: 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,747 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.51% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,159.06, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $16,165 sits slightly below last year's $16,582.
That price movement suggests the CX-5 has softened enough to help you buy more selectively today. For a future seller, that also means resale value may depend more on condition, mileage, and trim than on broad market momentum. Well-kept examples should still hold appeal because the model has a strong reputation with shoppers.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 safe?
It earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from the IIHS when equipped with automatic emergency braking.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, and Smart City Brake Support. Touring adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while Grand Touring adds adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. That means the most advanced safety tech is not standard across the lineup, so trim choice matters if safety features are a priority.
Should I buy a 2017 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 32.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.51% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 CX-5 blends upscale styling with engaging driving dynamics.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $16,929, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $16,165 average.
- It adds a more premium-feeling package with updated style and comfort.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2017 is the smarter starting point because prices have eased and the model still delivers strong owner satisfaction. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer example with a slightly more premium feel, the next year is worth a look.
