Summary
With 96 currently listed for sale near San Jose, CA and an average price of $18,532.00, 31.3% of 2017 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Mazda CX-5 stands out by aiming for a sporty, upscale personality rather than trying to appeal to everyone in the compact crossover market. In a segment with many different personalities, it is presented as the kind of SUV for a buyer who wants something more engaging than the usual commuter choice and a little nicer than the average crossover, without needing to move into a luxury brand.
What makes it especially distinctive is that it is described as fun to drive and uniquely upscale for its class. That combination gives it a clear identity among compact SUVs that are often more practical than exciting. It also fits buyers who want more space than a sedan but still care about driving enjoyment.
At the same time, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 is not framed as the most spacious or most powerful option, and some owners wished for more cargo space and more power. Even so, its stylish design, smooth ride, comfortable handling, fuel economy, and strong reliability help explain why it appeals to shoppers looking for a crossover with a more polished feel.

I bought this car to replace the same model that I lost in an accident. It was a year older and a lower trim. This trim is the premium trim and it’s nice. It has a heads up display full of seats. The steering wheel warms up memory seats and it runs like a dream. I really enjoy driving this car..

I bought the sport, base model, and for being a base model the features are pretty good. The only thing I wish I had, was rear vents for the AC.

| Year-Round High | $16,604.63 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,566 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.28% |
Prices have softened 2.28% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

If you find a listing below $15,166.07, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its stylish design, smooth ride, and excellent reliability, and they also call out comfortable handling and fuel economy. That lines up with the overview’s focus on a sporty, upscale compact crossover that feels more engaging than the average commuter SUV while still fitting everyday use. With 27.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, you also have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback repeatedly points to excellent reliability, and the model is also described as dependable and trouble-free over time. On the road, the CX-5’s strong acceleration, composed cornering, and confident braking support the impression of a vehicle you can count on. The first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house, which helps early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is finding a neglected example, so condition and service history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Mazda CX-5?
At 60.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and whether the equipment level matches the trim being advertised. Because some trims add meaningful safety and convenience features, it’s worth confirming exactly what’s installed before you buy.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Sport trim includes 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, power side mirrors, a reversing camera, keyless entry, push-button start, dual USB ports, MazdaConnect infotainment, and Bluetooth hands-free calling. Touring adds leatherette seating, auto-leveling headlights, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rear USB ports, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, rear climate vents, and Mazda Advanced Keyless Entry. Grand Touring adds 19-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, adaptive headlights, LED fog lights, heated side mirrors, rain-sensing wipers, a power moonroof, a power rear liftgate, full leather seating, an 8-way power driver’s seat with lumbar support, navigation, auto-dimming mirrors, SiriusXM satellite radio, and a 10-speaker Bose premium stereo.
- Powertrain: Every trim uses a 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine with 187 horsepower and 185 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift mode. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available. Fuel economy is 24 mpg city, 31 highway, and 27 combined with FWD, or 23 city, 30 highway, and 26 combined with AWD.
- Safety package: Smart City Brake Support is standard, and it can pre-charge the brakes and automatically engage them at low speeds if needed. Touring adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. Grand Touring adds adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. The Top Safety Pick+ recognition applies when automatic emergency braking is equipped.
- Infotainment: MazdaConnect uses a 7-inch screen controlled by a rotary dial, though it can act as a touchscreen when the vehicle is in Park. It does not offer Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.
- Fuel efficiency: The CX-5 returns 24 mpg city, 31 highway, and 27 combined with front-wheel drive, or 23 city, 30 highway, and 26 combined with all-wheel drive. In testing, the AWD model averaged 26.3 mpg.
Which 2017 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2017 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 3 trim levels: Sport, Touring, and Grand Touring.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the value entry point if you want the CX-5’s core strengths without paying for extras. You still get key convenience and safety basics, including LED headlights, a reversing camera, keyless entry, push-button start, and MazdaConnect.
- Touring: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the comfort and convenience upgrades many buyers will actually notice every day, including heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, leatherette seating, rear USB ports, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
- Grand Touring: Choose this if you want the most upscale CX-5 experience, with leather seating, navigation, a Bose stereo, a power moonroof, a power liftgate, adaptive headlights, and the full suite of added driver-assistance features.
The safety-package upgrades are meaningful as you move up the range, especially if you want blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough deal activity to reward patience.
- Deal availability: 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,809 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.28% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,166.07, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $16,188 sits slightly below last year's $16,566.
That softer pricing suggests the CX-5 has become a bit easier to buy than it was a year ago, which can help you if you’re shopping now. For a future seller, it also means you should pay close attention to purchase price and condition, because those two factors will shape how much value you can recover later. The model’s strong owner satisfaction should help support demand when it’s time to resell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2017 Mazda CX-5 has been named a Top Safety Pick+ by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety when equipped with automatic emergency braking.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety equipment includes front- and side-impact airbags, a tire pressure monitoring system, and Smart City Brake Support. Touring adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while Grand Touring adds adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic emergency braking. That means some of the most desirable driver-assistance features are not standard on the lower trims, so you should verify the equipment list carefully if safety tech matters to you.
Should I buy a 2017 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.28% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 stands out for being fun to drive and uniquely upscale in the compact crossover segment.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $16,846, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $16,188 average.
- It pushes Mazda further toward premium-brand territory with a more polished feel.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2017 is the smarter buy because pricing has eased and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model-year feel and a more premium presentation, the 2018 is the alternative to compare.
