CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Lexus GX

Summary
With 41 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $27,895, 34.1% of 2017 Lexus GXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Lexus GX 5 / 5 stars.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Lexus GX stands out as a luxury SUV that still leans hard into off-road ability. By this point in its second generation, it had already gained a number of useful updates, including a blind-spot monitor that was moved to the standard features column in 2019, and the 2020 refresh brought sharper styling, a massive new grille, and the Lexus Safety System+ suite as standard equipment. That package included frontal collision mitigation, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. A new Off-Road package also arrived for the luxury trim, adding surround-view cameras, a fuel tank skid plate, a transmission cooler, crawl control, and the multi-terrain select system.
For buyers, the appeal is the GX’s mix of durability, luxury, and capability. The second-generation model was powered by a 4.6-liter V8 with 301 hp and 329 lb-ft of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel drive. It also offered standard third-row seats with a power-folding function, and the cabin gained an eight-inch infotainment touchscreen and NuLuxe synthetic leather upholstery in 2014. The 2017 model year also brought a Sport Design package with a different grille, wheels, and some chrome trim, plus second-row captain’s chairs added to all but the base model, though they were offered as an option.
The tradeoff is that the GX’s off-road strengths come with compromises. Fuel economy was only 15/20 mpg city/highway, and the SUV was still showing its age against newer rivals by this point. Its third-row seats were also cramped, and the body-on-frame design that helps it handle rough terrain typically results in a bumpier ride and poorer on-road handling.

Smoothest SUV Ive ever driven. Its a bit heavy bc of the v8 and build quality, but doesnt feel as heavy as a bmw, gmc, or ford medium/large suv. Maybe the tightest build Ive ever felt of any vehicle. Everything clicks, opens, or closes exactly how it should. Its like the feeling of haptic feedback on a smart phone. It just feels like the right response. Personally, I prefer body on frame (truck) suvs. It feels better than our mid sized crossover suv. Gas is not the greatest, but its not the worst either (I used to drive big v8 fords and gm trucks). I appreciate the size bc there is minimum body roll and its just spacious enough. Its such a comfortable drive that I actually like getting stuck in traffic, which is also why I would never mod this vehicle and just keep it stock. Its pristine. A lot of people complain about the navigation system bc of the lack of carplay, but I may be one of the few ppl that found carplay annoying. Id rather have this system. This is a premium ride thats well built, dependable, smooth, and so comfortable. Highly recommended.

Love this GX460 model over the LX570, which is an awesome vehicle, for a few reasons. 3rd row seating is better for tucking away. Didnt need the passenger row seating video screens. The 570 feels stout as a tank but the 460 feels like a more manageable vehicle in parking lots. Both are supreme and super quiet however. And the clincher for my choice was the 460 aftermarket kit is a aila le for camping in, as well as the frosting on the dessert is the Mark Levinson sound system on this Luxury model. Engine takes 8 quarts of oil! Bullet proof lubrication. Transmission shifts beautifully. Any money saved on many better mpg vehicles is lost with maintenance and repair costs. Love this vehicle!

Prices have softened 3.94% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 466 listings available, which gives you a reasonable amount of inventory to compare before you buy.
Is the 2017 Lexus GX a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Lexus GX earns a 5/5 user rating, which points to very strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its luxury feel, off-road capability, spaciousness, comfortable and smooth ride, and robust nature. For you, that means it fits especially well if you want a premium SUV that can handle rough terrain while still feeling refined for everyday use. With 38.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is also a decent amount of market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Lexus GX reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as reliable and robust, and they also highlight its dependable nature and trouble-free ownership experience. That kind of feedback matters if you want a used SUV you can count on over time, especially when you plan to keep it for the long haul. For used buyers, the main risk is less about the model’s reputation and more about how well a specific example has been maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Lexus GX?
At 57.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from those with prior damage. Then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, with extra attention to body condition, signs of past repairs, and how the SUV drives and shifts. Because this model is valued for durability and capability, you want to focus on overall condition and maintenance quality rather than just mileage alone.

What is the 2017 Lexus GX's resale value?
The current average of $26,526 sits slightly below last year's $27,614.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to price competitively to stand out. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation later. Strong owner satisfaction can help support demand when it is time to sell, especially for shoppers who value durability and capability.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Lexus GX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 38.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 57.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.94% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line:
If you want a luxury SUV with strong owner approval, solid capability, and a market that still offers some deal potential, the 2017 GX is a sensible target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare it with nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-maintained example you can find rather than chasing the lowest sticker price alone.
