CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Kia Sorento
overall

Summary
With 70 currently listed for sale near Toledo, OH and an average price of $11,995, 47.1% of 2017 Kia Sorentos for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Kia Sorento 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 9.33 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2017 Kia Sorento stands out as a midsize crossover SUV that makes a strong case for itself across styling and design, comfort and controls, safety and technology, value and practicality, and driving dynamics. It is presented as one of the best vehicles in its segment, which gives it broad appeal for shoppers who want an all-around capable family crossover rather than a one-note specialist.
It also carries an emphasis on durability and ownership confidence, since it is engineered to exceed the requirements of the most demanding warranty coverage in the business. Owner feedback generally reinforces its strengths, with praise for the smooth ride and stylish interior, along with comfort and power. At the same time, some owners point to a cramped third row that is not very accessible, and a few wished for a bigger screen or reported occasional engine issues, so its appeal is strongest for buyers who value comfort and overall balance more than maximum rear-seat space.

I love the car overall, great for my family and I. One thing I don’t like about it, on cold days I can’t start my car up and go back in the house! The doors won’t stay locked but other than that, no issues!

Have not received the car yet. It is yet to be delivered. But everything we have read and watched has been very positive about this car. Everyone keeps comparing the third row seats and less luggage storage to other larger vehicles. We keep saying, this is a cross over, not a minivan. If you want a third row with lots of extra luggage space, buy a minivan not a cross over. I am sure we will love the car!

Very nice car. Rides as good as a Lexus. Has more power than I expected for a 4 cylinder. Handles well.

How much does the 2017 Kia Sorento cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $11,314 |
| Year-Round Low | $11,315.95 |
| Year-Round High | $12,370.19 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $12,377 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −8.58% |
Prices have softened 8.58% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,255 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare prices and equipment. If you find a listing below $11,315.95, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Kia Sorento a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Kia Sorento earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 9.33/10 expert rating. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness, Technology, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the smooth ride, stylish interior, and strong comfort. The V6 engine also gets repeated approval for its power, and the Sorento’s overall usefulness comes through in the way it balances comfort, practicality, and everyday drivability.
That lines up with the Sorento’s role as a well-rounded midsize crossover SUV for shoppers who want broad competence rather than a one-note specialty. Even with some tradeoffs in third-row space and screen size, it still comes across as a strong all-around family SUV.
With 30.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Kia Sorento reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience overall, with many drivers expressing confidence in the Sorento’s long-term appeal. The expert review also reinforces that sense of durability by noting Kia’s warranty-minded engineering and the brand’s emphasis on long-term value.
The powertrain and cabin experience both suggest a vehicle built to be lived with, not just admired. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure any example you consider has been maintained well and doesn’t have unresolved engine or usage-related issues.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Kia Sorento?
At 59.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Pay close attention to body condition, interior wear, and whether the third row and infotainment features work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from L to SX Limited, and the base L misses some of the advanced driver-assistance equipment that appears on higher trims.
- Powertrain: You can get a 185-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder, a 240-horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder, or a 290-horsepower 3.3-liter V6; the V6 also can tow up to 5,000 pounds.
- Safety package: Automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-departure warning are available on all trims except the basic L, while the LX V6 can add blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert.
- Infotainment: UVO is available for most versions, supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and includes connected services without a paid subscription.
- Fuel efficiency: With AWD and the V6, the Sorento is expected to get 19 mpg in combined driving, and the test vehicle averaged 19.4 mpg.
Which 2017 Kia Sorento trim should I buy?
The 2017 Kia Sorento is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LX, EX, SX, SX Limited.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the entry point, but it’s the one most likely to leave you wanting more because the advanced safety suite is not available here.
- LX: This is the trim to watch if you want a practical starting point with room to add the V6 and some useful safety upgrades.
- EX: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it brings the turbocharged engine and a stronger mix of equipment.
- SX: This is the better pick if you want the V6 standard and a more upscale feel without going all the way to the top.
- SX Limited: This is the luxury-leaning choice, with the richest feature set and the most premium presentation.
The safety package is available across all trims except the basic L, so if advanced driver assistance matters to you, start your search above the entry model.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Kia Sorento?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,255 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.58% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $11,315.95, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Kia Sorento's resale value?
The current average of $11,314 sits slightly below last year's $12,377.
That price movement suggests the Sorento has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you choose a well-kept example and avoid overpaying, you give yourself a better chance of limiting your loss when it’s time to sell.
Demand should also stay supported by the model’s strong owner satisfaction and broad appeal as a practical midsize SUV. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Kia Sorento safe?
The Sorento earns Top Safety Pick+ status from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and a five-star crash test rating from the federal government.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The available driver-assistance suite includes automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning, and lane-departure warning. Those systems are available on all trims except the basic L, and the LX V6 can add blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert. Only the SX Limited adds a 360-degree surround-view camera system.
Should I buy a 2017 Kia Sorento or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.58% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines strong value, safety, and everyday usefulness in a way that makes it one of the segment’s better-rounded choices.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $10,114, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $11,314 average.
- It brings a more upscale appearance and a refined interior.
The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package, the 2017 is the better target because it pairs broad competence with strong safety and value. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 is worth a look for its lower price and similar practical appeal, but you should expect to give up some of the 2017’s market advantages.
