CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Jeep Cherokee

Summary
With 102 currently listed for sale and an average price of $11,535, 21.6% of 2017 Jeep Cherokee listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Jeep Cherokee 4.45 / 5 stars.
87.3% of 2017 Jeep Cherokee listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Jeep Cherokee stands out as a compact SUV that blends Jeep styling with a more crossover-like shape. For this model year, it wore high-intensity discharge headlamps on all trims except the Sport, and Jeep had already expanded the lineup with the High Altitude and Overland trims. That combination gave the Cherokee a more upscale and contemporary feel than its rugged reputation might suggest, while still keeping the brand’s familiar identity.
It also offered a mix of everyday convenience and real capability. Standard equipment included LED taillamps, Bluetooth, air conditioning, two USB ports, an aux jack, an SD card reader, and remote keyless entry, while the 5-inch touchscreen with Uconnect 5.0 and voice recognition kept the cabin reasonably modern. Jeep’s Selec-Terrain system was included on 4x4 trims, and the Cherokee could still be had with a low-range transfer case on some versions, with the Trailhawk adding a rear differential lock. At the same time, the model’s limitations were clear: the base 2.4-liter four-cylinder was described as harsh and underpowered, and the Cherokee was not as capable off-road as the older Cherokee that came before it.
For buyers, the appeal of the 2017 Cherokee was the breadth of its equipment and trim choices. The Limited brought features such as leather upholstery with heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, an 8.4-inch touchscreen with Uconnect 8.4 and SiriusXM radio, while the Trailhawk added red tow hooks, all-terrain tires, a one-inch lift, revised bumpers, and a Rock mode for Selec-Terrain. That mix of comfort, technology, and available trail hardware helped make the 2017 Cherokee a distinctive choice, even if its transmission and powertrain reputation kept it from being an easy recommendation for everyone.

I had a 2019 Cherokee Trailhawk a few years ago and I fell in love with the Cherokee ls after that. Sadly I had to part ways with the original one I had but being able to find another Cherokee at a good price and mileage is amazing. I love the ride it provides! Great sound system, modern interior and design, quiet ride in the cab with minimal road noise and incredibly comfortable. Love the Cherokees!

Is the 2017 Jeep Cherokee a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Jeep Cherokee earns a 4.45/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction overall. Owners commonly praise its comfort, smooth ride, and the variety of features it offers, and many also like the way it delivers a more upscale feel than its price might suggest. For shoppers who want a compact SUV with everyday comfort and a mix of convenience and capability, that combination is appealing. With 33.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Jeep Cherokee reliable?
Owners rate it 4.45/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback also points to reliability concerns, with some drivers reporting breakdowns and repeated repairs. That means you should treat condition and maintenance history as especially important if you want to reduce long-term ownership risk.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Jeep Cherokee?
At 63.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any reported damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on signs of past collision work, uneven panel gaps, and any mechanical issues that could affect daily use. Pay close attention to overall condition and maintenance records, since those details matter more when you are sorting through a mixed inventory.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Jeep Cherokee?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on strong listings.
- Deal availability: 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,347 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.70% compared with last year.

What is the 2017 Jeep Cherokee's resale value?
The current average of $11,752 sits slightly below last year's $12,462.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you keep the vehicle in good condition and maintain it well, you may be better positioned to limit losses when it is time to sell. Strong shopper interest can still support demand, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.45/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Jeep Cherokee or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 33.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.70% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.45/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $10,290, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $11,752 average.
- It offers impressive capability at a reasonable price.
The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced shopping target, the 2017 is the stronger primary choice because it combines a lower current price trend with solid owner satisfaction and a broad set of listings. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2016 is the better secondary path, especially if you find one in strong condition and can live with the older model-year tradeoff.
