CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Hyundai Sonata

Summary
With 1,520 currently listed for sale and an average price of $9,940, 28.1% of 2017 Hyundai Sonata listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Hyundai Sonata 4.36 / 5 stars.
53.4% of 2017 Hyundai Sonata listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Hyundai Sonata stands out as a midsize sedan that tries to deliver a lot of car for the money. It was part of the seventh generation, which was designed to be tech-forward and efficient while still keeping an affordable price tag. That formula gives the Sonata broad appeal for shoppers who want a comfortable, well-equipped sedan without paying class-leading prices.
For 2017, the Sonata offered a generous mix of equipment and powertrains. Standard features included an eight-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, USB ports, SiriusXM satellite radio, adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, rear seat reminders, driver-attention warnings, and automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection. The lineup also included multiple engines, from the 2.4-liter four-cylinder to the 1.6-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and the 2.0-liter turbo four in the sportier versions, plus a hybrid option. That range helped the Sonata cover a lot of ground, from efficiency to stronger performance.
At the same time, the 2017 Sonata has some important drawbacks to keep in mind. The source notes that Consumer Reports gave the 2017 and 2018 models well below-average reliability ratings, with issues centered on excessive oil consumption and premature wear in the Theta II engine family. It is also one of the 2010s-era Hyundai models vulnerable to theft, which can mean extra precautions and higher insurance costs. Even so, its low prices, long equipment list, and comfortable, roomy character make it an appealing used-car choice for buyers who prioritize value and features.

I bought a Sonata with the SE trim, so no power seats, blind spot indicator, heated seats or anything like that. However, it does have TPMS, Apple CarPlay, great backup camera, lots of rear seat leg room and is very solid and comfortable. Gets great gas mileage too! Overall, an excellent value.

Is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Hyundai Sonata earns a 4.36/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Drivers commonly praise its dependability, affordability, and smooth driving experience, and many also like the good gas mileage and value for the price. For you, that means this Sonata fits especially well if you want a comfortable, well-equipped midsize sedan that delivers a lot of features for the money. With 29.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata reliable?
Owners rate it 4.36/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights dependability and trouble-free ownership for many drivers, along with a sense that the car can be counted on for everyday use. That said, some owners mention concerns about higher-mileage vehicles, so you should pay close attention to maintenance history and condition. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure you avoid examples that have been neglected or show signs of engine-related wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Sonata?
At 53.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection from a trusted mechanic. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car has been maintained consistently, especially if the mileage is higher. If a listing looks unusually cheap, make sure the condition and history support the price before you move forward.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Sonata?
This looks like a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,494 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.09% compared with last year.

What is the 2017 Hyundai Sonata's resale value?
The current average of $9,954 sits slightly below last year's $10,378.
That softer pricing suggests the market is giving buyers more leverage today, but it can also mean future resale gains may be more gradual. If you buy well now, you may have a better chance of limiting depreciation compared with paying near the top of the range. Strong value positioning and broad shopper appeal can help support demand when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Sonata or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 53.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.09% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $9,300, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $9,954 average.
- It is a capable, well-rounded sedan that emphasizes comfort and value.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $11,864, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $9,954 average.
- It adds more technology, safety, and powertrain variety.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, features, and shopper appeal, the 2017 is the primary year to target. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 is the better value play, while the 2018 makes sense if you want to spend more for a newer-feeling package and can justify the higher price.
