What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport?

At 61.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then focus your inspection on bodywork, panel alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because this model is positioned as a family-friendly, feature-rich SUV, it also makes sense to check that the comfort, tech, and safety equipment all work as expected. Pay close attention to the condition of the interior and cargo area, since those are core strengths for this vehicle.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Santa Fe Sport is a 2-row, 5-passenger crossover SUV with a choice between a 4-cylinder and a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. The base setup is the 185-horsepower, 2.4-liter 4-cylinder, while the upgraded turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder brings 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The best-value choice is the trim that gives you the equipment and power you want without pushing you into a heavily optioned version.
• Powertrain: The turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder delivers brisk acceleration and strong passing power, while the 6-speed automatic and available all-wheel drive keep it easy to live with. Drive Mode Select adds Eco, Normal, and Sport settings, and the vehicle is described as secure and trustworthy on the road.
• Safety package: The Santa Fe Sport includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, dynamic headlights, and a multi-view camera system. Blue Link also adds SOS emergency assistance, automatic collision notification, and teen-driver features like speed and curfew alerts.
• Infotainment: Versions with navigation get an 8-inch touchscreen, while models without navigation use a 7-inch screen. Both systems include Android Auto smartphone projection, but not Apple CarPlay, and Blue Link subscription services are available.
• Fuel efficiency: The expert evaluation notes 21.5 mpg on a test loop and says that falls short of the EPA’s estimate of 23 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport trim should I buy?

The 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is offered in 2 trim levels: Santa Fe Sport and Santa Fe Sport 2.0T Ultimate.

Here's the short version:

• Santa Fe Sport: This is the trim to start with if you want the core Santa Fe Sport formula at the lowest entry price. It gives you the 2-row layout, the 185-horsepower 2.4-liter engine, and the practical, comfortable character that defines the model.
• Santa Fe Sport 2.0T Ultimate: This is the stronger choice if you want more power and a more fully equipped experience. The turbocharged 2.0-liter engine brings 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, and the test vehicle description shows it can be loaded with nearly all available options. This is the trim to consider if you want the most capability and features.

The safety content highlights a broad set of driver-assistance and collision-avoidance technologies, along with a Top Safety Pick+ rating and a 5-star crash-test rating.

This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing movement to reward careful shopping.

• Deal availability: 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,395 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.17% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 61.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $11,054, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport's resale value?

The current average of $11,054 sits slightly below last year's $12,305.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the current pricing trend means you should expect a more value-sensitive market rather than a strong appreciation story. Still, the model’s broad appeal, comfort, and feature content should help it remain attractive to used shoppers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport safe?

The broad list of standard driver-assistance features is a major strength for this model year.

Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.17% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 update brings revised styling, new infotainment systems, and a long list of new driver-assistance and safety technologies.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, safety, and features, the 2017 is the right place to focus. If your priority is simply the lowest possible purchase price, you can also compare nearby years, but the 2017 stands out for its combination of softened pricing and strong owner satisfaction.

How does the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport compare to the 2017 Kia Sorento?

Our experts score the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 8.5/10 and the 2017 Kia Sorento 9.3/10.

The Sorento edges ahead overall, but the Santa Fe Sport remains a strong value play with a lower average used price and a slightly better good-and-great-deal share. The Santa Fe Sport also has the stronger accident-free share, while the Sorento offers a bit more highway efficiency. If you want the better-rated overall package, the Sorento has the advantage; if you want the lower-cost option with solid market value, the Santa Fe Sport is still compelling.
