Why it stands out
The 2017 Hyundai Elantra stands out as a full redesign inside and out, with a clear emphasis on technology, efficiency, and safety. That combination helped move it to the front of the small-car pack, and it also reflects Hyundai’s broader push to make value-oriented cars that do not feel cheap. For shoppers, that means the Elantra aims to deliver the kind of everyday usability compact-car buyers want without giving up the features and polish that once were reserved for larger or pricier vehicles.
What makes this model especially appealing is the way it builds on a very competent outgoing generation while adding some of the best styling, ergonomics, safety, and technology available for the money. It is presented as a strong answer for buyers who want a commuter that is good on gas, easy to park, and still comfortable enough to feel well equipped. At the same time, the available owner feedback suggests that comfort, fuel efficiency, and value are major strengths, while acceleration power may leave some drivers wanting more.

I just lost my Hyundai 2017 in a crash. It was my second Elantra and I drove them both for 8 years. I did routine maintenance but never had any repair bills . They are great cars and that is why I am looking to buy another one.

I recently bought the Limited trim from CarHub in Stafford, VA. The features are great, it drives smoothly, I feel safe in this car, and the value was great as Im able to pay it off without destroying my wallet. I genuinely feel like this car matches up to a Corolla and a Civic, so I highly recommend it!

The 2017 model has some nice upgrades compared with the previous generation. Different front appearance. It also has a better gas mileage and a more sophisticated entertainment system. I would have loved to see also heated seats and a sun-roof which is only available in certain sport versions. But all in all I am very happy about this car and consider it a good value.

Is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra a good car?
Yes — the 4.73/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 8.83/10. The model scores 10/10 across Cost effectiveness and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, fuel efficiency, and value for money, and they also like the comfortable seating and advanced technology. The overview frames it as a commuter-friendly small car that is easy to park, good on gas, and still well equipped.
With 21.5% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to find a compelling example.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.73/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback highlights comfort, fuel efficiency, and value, while also describing it as a strong alternative to pricier competitors. That kind of praise usually lines up with a car that people feel good about living with day to day.
The expert notes also point to a quiet, well-sorted ride and a drivetrain that delivers respectable efficiency, which supports the case for dependable everyday use. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is choosing a neglected example, so condition and maintenance history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?
At 46% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision. Focus on bodywork quality, panel alignment, and signs of uneven wear so you can separate a clean, well-kept car from one that has been repaired poorly.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE trim includes power windows and locks, a 6-speaker stereo with AM/FM/XM radio and a CD player, and USB/auxiliary audio inputs. The Limited adds Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity with voice control, keyless entry, push-button start, and steering-wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls, with some of those features also available on the SE.
- Powertrain: The main setup uses a 2.0-liter engine with drive modes for Normal, Sport, and Eco. An Eco trim is also mentioned with a turbocharged 1.4-liter inline 4-cylinder and an estimated 35 mpg combined.
- Safety package: Available safety tech includes electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, traction control, tire pressure monitoring, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection. Some of those features are optional rather than standard.
- Infotainment: Standard equipment includes USB/auxiliary audio inputs and SiriusXM satellite radio. Higher trims add navigation, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available through the touchscreen.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates 29 mpg city, 38 highway, and 33 combined. The Limited is rated at 28 mpg city and 37 highway, while the SE with the manual is rated at 26/36.
Which 2017 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 2 trim levels: SE, Limited.
Here's the short version:

- Limited: This is the best-value trim if you want the more complete package. It adds Bluetooth with voice control, keyless entry, push-button start, and steering-wheel controls, and it can be equipped with navigation and other upscale features through packages.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 21.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,616 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.25% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 46.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $9,351.80, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $9,627 sits slightly below last year's $10,268.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right number. If you purchase near the lower end of the range, you give yourself a better chance of limiting your loss later. Strong feature content and broad appeal can also help keep demand steady when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.73/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra safe?
Hyundai says the 2017 Elantra is expected to earn an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and a five-star NHTSA crash-test rating.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The safety equipment includes electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, traction control, and a tire pressure monitoring system. Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 21.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 46% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.73/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 stands out as a full redesign with a strong emphasis on technology, efficiency, and safety.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $8,350, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $9,627 average.
- It offers a roomy, efficient, simple, and safe package with a futuristic-looking design.
The bottom line: Buy the 2017 if you want the better-equipped, more modern-feeling Elantra and you can find one with clean history. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 is the value-first alternative, especially if you prioritize lower purchase price over the newer model’s added polish.
