Why it stands out
The 2016 Hyundai Elantra stands out in the compact car class by striking a balance that is neither especially smooth and refined nor rough and gruff. That middle-ground character helps it feel easy to live with, and it is part of why the car impresses more than it distresses.
Its appeal also comes from a design that, even at six years old, still looks futuristic rather than dated. Beyond style, the Elantra is described as roomy, efficient, simple, and safe, which gives it broad everyday appeal for buyers who want value without unnecessary complexity. Owner feedback reinforces that impression, with praise for comfort, reliability, excellent fuel economy, a smooth ride, and attractive design. Some drivers, however, have been disappointed by the lack of Bluetooth and a spare tire.

We loved our Elantra! Great ride, great on gas and it was put to the ULTIMATE TEST when during a downpour a tractor trailer flew by and swerved into our lane causing us to hydroplane across 3 lanes then down an embankment where we flipped on our side and finally came to a stop when we hit a tree line. Climbed out the top through the passenger window and walked away with only a few bumps and bruises. The rescuers, police and tow truck guys all said wow, that car saved your lives!

I love the Hyndai Elantra. It is a very solid, good steering, roomy, reliable and sporty looking vehicle. I believe it is comparable to a Honda Civic or Chevy Cruze.

I bought the 2016 GL model late 2015 I have been very impressed - a wider body than the Ford Focus i owned, great features, cruise even with a Manual, AC electric windows and locks, blutooth, very comfortable and smooth quiet engine. very sharp looking and excellent mileage. my vehicle now has 170,000 kms and runs like new, no issues mechanically at all just oil changes and filters and brakes which I did myself - parts very easy to obtain online line rotors etc.

| Year-Round Low | $7,971.09 |
| Year-Round High | $8,850 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $8,853 |

Prices have softened 5.58% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,265 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare. If you find a listing below $7,971.09, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra a good car?
Yes — the 2016 Hyundai Elantra earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, reliability, excellent fuel economy, smooth ride, and attractive design. The overview also points to a roomy, efficient, simple, and safe package, which makes it easy to live with as an everyday commuter. With 25.1% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you room to shop selectively.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights reliability, comfort, excellent fuel economy, and a car that feels easy to live with over time. The expert drive notes a drivetrain that is neither smooth and refined nor rough and gruff, but instead impresses more than it distresses, which supports the sense that it’s a dependable daily driver. The cost-effectiveness notes also point to favorable dependability ratings and low predicted ownership costs.
Hyundai’s long warranty coverage adds another layer of reassurance for used buyers, but you should still pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition because age and mileage matter more once factory coverage has moved on.
What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Hyundai Elantra?
At 47.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or incomplete service records. Focus on condition, maintenance consistency, and whether the car’s features still work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base SE is the most stripped-down version, and it lacks the reversing camera that comes standard on higher trims. The Value Edition adds a more upscale feel with 16-inch aluminum wheels, while the Limited brings a more polished cabin presentation.
- Powertrain: Most versions use a 145-hp 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine. The SE gets a 6-speed manual, while the Value Edition and Limited use a 6-speed automatic with a manual shift gate and Active Eco setting. The setup is tuned for easy everyday driving and solid efficiency rather than excitement.
- Safety package: The car does not offer modern driver-assistance and crash-avoidance technologies. It does include a reversing camera on all but the base SE, and the safety content notes a 5-star federal crash rating plus Good IIHS results except for an Acceptable small overlap frontal result.
- Infotainment: The standard setup uses a touchscreen radio system with Bluetooth, and higher trims can add a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, navigation, premium audio, Pandora access, and Blue Link subscription services. The base setup is more limited, and the smaller display can be hard to use.
- Fuel efficiency: The official EPA ratings are 28 mpg city/38 highway/32 combined, and the test loop returned 33.8 mpg. The car’s efficiency is one of its strongest ownership advantages.
Which 2016 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2016 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, Value Edition, Sport, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SE is the most basic choice, and it lacks the reversing camera that comes standard on higher trims. It also uses the simpler manual transmission setup.
- Sweet-spot trim: The Value Edition is the best balance of value and everyday comfort. It adds a more upscale feel, automatic transmission, Active Eco, and 16-inch aluminum wheels without pushing into luxury pricing.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the most polished choice, with the 7-inch infotainment system, navigation, premium sound, and Blue Link services. It’s the best pick if you want the most features.
- Off-road trim: The Sport is the least natural fit for typical daily driving because its steering feel is described as artificial, even though it is more powerful and has a tighter suspension.
The safety-package note is simple: if you want the reversing camera, avoid the base SE.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Elantra?
This is a moderate, selective-buyer market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 25.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,265 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.58% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 47.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $7,971.09, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $8,359 sits slightly below last year's $8,853.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. The current market also shows a meaningful spread between low and high pricing, so condition and trim will matter when you eventually resell. Strong owner satisfaction helps too, because well-liked cars tend to stay easier to move.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra safe?
It earns five-star ratings from NHTSA overall, and the IIHS gives it Good ratings in all tests except the small overlap frontal impact evaluation, where it receives an Acceptable rating.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The Elantra does include a reversing camera on all but the base SE, but it does not offer modern driver-assistance and crash-avoidance technologies. That means you get solid crash-test performance for the era, but not the advanced safety suite that newer used cars often provide. The small-overlap IIHS caveat is the main thing to keep in mind if safety is a top priority.
Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2016 if:
- 25.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 47.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.58% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Although its design is now 6 years old, the 2016 Hyundai Elantra remains an impressive entry in the compact car class.
Consider the 2015 if:
- At $7,935, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,359 average.
- It offers generous space, useful features, and strong value.
Consider the 2017 if:
- At $9,633, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $8,359 average.
- It brings a full redesign with stronger technology, efficiency, and safety.
The bottom line: If you want the best blend of value, comfort, and proven ownership appeal, the 2016 is the smart middle ground. If your priority is the lowest purchase price, the 2015 is the better budget play. If you want the newer redesign and are willing to pay more, the 2017 is the upgrade path.
