Why it stands out
The 2017 Hyundai Elantra stands out as a full redesign inside and out, with a clear emphasis on technology, efficiency, and safety. That combination helped move it to the front of the small-car pack, and it also reflects Hyundai’s broader push to make value-oriented cars that do not feel cheap. For shoppers, that means the Elantra aims to deliver the kind of everyday usability compact-car buyers want without giving up the features and polish that once were reserved for larger or pricier vehicles.
What makes this model especially appealing is the way it builds on a very competent outgoing generation while adding some of the best styling, ergonomics, safety, and technology available for the money. It is presented as a strong answer for buyers who want a commuter that is good on gas, easy to park, and still comfortable enough to feel well equipped. At the same time, the available owner feedback suggests that comfort, fuel efficiency, and value are major strengths, while acceleration power may leave some drivers wanting more.

I just lost my Hyundai 2017 in a crash. It was my second Elantra and I drove them both for 8 years. I did routine maintenance but never had any repair bills . They are great cars and that is why I am looking to buy another one.

I recently bought the Limited trim from CarHub in Stafford, VA. The features are great, it drives smoothly, I feel safe in this car, and the value was great as Im able to pay it off without destroying my wallet. I genuinely feel like this car matches up to a Corolla and a Civic, so I highly recommend it!

The 2017 model has some nice upgrades compared with the previous generation. Different front appearance. It also has a better gas mileage and a more sophisticated entertainment system. I would have loved to see also heated seats and a sun-roof which is only available in certain sport versions. But all in all I am very happy about this car and consider it a good value.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?
At 45.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car is priced near the low end of the market. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and whether the car’s equipment and safety features still function as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SE trim includes basics like power windows and locks, a 6-speaker stereo with AM/FM/XM radio and a CD player, and USB/auxiliary audio inputs. The Limited adds Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity with voice control, keyless entry, push-button start, and steering-wheel-mounted audio and cruise controls, with some of those features also available on the SE.
- Powertrain: The Elantra uses a drivetrain that delivers 29 mpg city, 38 highway, and 33 combined, while the Limited returns 28 mpg city and 37 highway. The SE with the manual is rated at 26/36, and an Eco trim is mentioned with a turbocharged 1.4-liter inline 4-cylinder making 128 hp and an estimated 35 mpg combined.
- Safety package: Available safety tech includes electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, traction control, tire pressure monitoring, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection.
- Infotainment: Standard equipment includes USB/auxiliary audio inputs and SiriusXM satellite radio. Higher trims add navigation with turn-by-turn instructions in the color display in the gauge cluster, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available through the touchscreen.
- Fuel efficiency: The Elantra is rated at 29 mpg city, 38 highway, and 33 combined, with the Limited at 28 mpg city and 37 highway. The SE with the manual is rated at 26/36, and the Eco trim is estimated at 35 mpg combined.
Which 2017 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?
The 2017 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 2 trim levels: SE, Limited.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Elantra experience with power windows and locks, a 6-speaker stereo, and USB/auxiliary inputs. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and are comfortable skipping some convenience features.
- Limited: This is the better-equipped choice, adding Bluetooth hands-free calling with voice control, keyless entry, push-button start, and steering-wheel-mounted controls. It is the best-value trim if you want a more polished daily driver without jumping into the highest-priced configuration.
Safety features such as forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and the backup camera are available rather than standard, so check carefully which package a used example has.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Hyundai Elantra?

If you find a listing below $9,351.81, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?
The current average of $9,606 sits slightly below last year's $10,259.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help if you buy now and sell later. If market demand stays steady, a lower entry price can reduce the amount of value you lose over your ownership period.
The Elantra’s strong value reputation and solid owner satisfaction should help support demand among used-car shoppers. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.73/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Hyundai Elantra safe?
Hyundai expects that the 2017 Elantra will earn an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and a five-star NHTSA crash-test rating when it's put through testing.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The available driver-assistance equipment includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and a backup camera with rear cross-path detection. Standard safety tech also includes electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, traction control, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
Because some of the advanced safety features are available rather than standard, you should verify exactly which package a used car has before you buy.
Should I buy a 2017 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 24.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 45.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.37% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.73/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 stands out for its redesign, strong technology, and safety focus.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $8,227, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $9,606 average.
- It is roomy, efficient, simple, and safe.
The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded version of this compact sedan, the 2017 is the stronger pick because it brings the redesign, stronger tech, and a more modern feel. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the value play and still delivers the core Elantra strengths.
