Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Hyundai Elantra earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10. Drivers consistently praise its comfort, reliability, and excellent fuel economy, and the overview points to a roomy, efficient, simple sedan that is easy to live with. That makes it a strong fit if you want practical everyday transportation with broad appeal rather than something flashy or demanding. Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback repeatedly highlights reliability, and the expert evaluation also points to favorable dependability ratings and low predicted ownership costs. The drivetrain is described as straightforward and free of aggravation, which supports the sense that this is a car you can count on for daily use. For a used buyer, the main long-term risk is less about the basic mechanical package and more about finding a well-kept example with complete maintenance history.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Hyundai Elantra?

At 45.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in any collision. Pay close attention to body condition, panel alignment, and signs of uneven wear, since those can reveal how well the car was repaired and maintained. Because this model is valued for comfort, reliability, and efficiency, you’ll want to make sure the specific car you choose still delivers those strengths in real-world condition.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The SE is the entry point, while the Value Edition adds 16-inch aluminum wheels and a more upscale look; the Limited brings a more polished cabin and additional convenience features. The base trim also misses the reversing camera, so feature gaps are worth checking carefully if you’re comparing lower-priced listings.
• Powertrain: Most versions use a 145-hp 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine, with a 6-speed manual in the SE and a 6-speed automatic in the Value Edition and Limited. The setup is tuned for predictable, easygoing driving rather than excitement, and the automatic includes an Active Eco setting.
• Safety package: A reversing camera is standard on all but the base SE. The car also includes Blue Link subscription services on higher trims, which add safety and convenience features, but the model is not available with modern driver-assistance and crash-avoidance technologies.
• Infotainment: Higher trims can get a touchscreen infotainment system with a 7-inch display, Bluetooth, Pandora access, navigation, a premium sound system, and Blue Link services. The base setup is more limited, and the smaller display on lower trims is a weak point.
• Fuel efficiency: The Elantra is rated at 28 mpg city and 38 mpg highway, with 32 mpg combined.

Which 2016 Hyundai Elantra trim should I buy?

The 2016 Hyundai Elantra is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, Value Edition, Sport, Limited.

Here's the short version:

• SE: This is the least expensive path into the Elantra, but you give up some convenience and safety equipment, including the reversing camera. It makes sense if your priority is keeping the purchase price as low as possible.
• Value Edition: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a more polished feel with 16-inch aluminum wheels and automatic transmission convenience. It also keeps the Elantra’s core strengths intact without pushing you into the pricier upper trims.
• Sport: Choose this if you want the more powerful, more aggressive version of the Elantra. The content notes a tighter suspension and more power, but also points out that the steering feel is artificial, so it’s best for buyers who prioritize a sportier character over refinement.
• Limited: This is the most upscale choice, with the most complete feature set and the most polished cabin presentation. It suits you best if you want the Elantra to feel as close to a near-luxury compact as this generation allows.

The reversing camera is standard on all but the base SE, so that trim-level safety gap is worth factoring into your decision.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Hyundai Elantra?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay patient.

• Deal availability: 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,271 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.75% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 45.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $7,967, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra's resale value?

The current average of $8,301 sits slightly below last year's $8,449.

That decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you as a buyer today but may temper future resale gains if you plan to sell later. The year-round range also shows that prices have room to move, so condition and mileage will matter a lot when it comes time to trade in or list the car. If you buy well and keep the car in strong shape, the Elantra’s value-oriented reputation can still help it remain appealing to budget-minded shoppers.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Hyundai Elantra safe?

The Elantra earns five-star ratings from NHTSA and a Good overall showing from IIHS, with an Acceptable result in the small overlap frontal impact test. It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The car includes a reversing camera on all but the base SE, and higher trims can add Blue Link services with safety and convenience features. The main caveat is that it does not offer modern driver-assistance and crash-avoidance technologies, so you should not expect the latest active-safety suite on this generation. The small overlap frontal result is the key shortcoming to keep in mind when you’re comparing used examples.

Should I buy a 2016 Hyundai Elantra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 28.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 45.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.75% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It balances value, comfort, and efficiency in a simple, easy-to-live-with package.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $7,535, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,301 average.
• It offers strong value, generous space, and useful features.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $9,421, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $8,301 average.
• It brings a full redesign with a fresher look and more technology.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, comfort, and everyday usability, the 2016 is the sensible middle ground. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 can save you money; if you want a newer-feeling redesign and can spend more, the 2017 is the upgrade path.

How does the 2016 Hyundai Elantra compare to the 2016 Honda Civic?

Our experts score the 2016 Hyundai Elantra 7.5/10 and the 2016 Honda Civic 8/10. The Elantra is the cheaper used buy by a wide margin, and it still delivers strong value, comfort, and efficiency. The Civic brings a stronger expert score, more power, better fuel economy, and a larger pool of listings, but you’ll pay significantly more for it. If your priority is budget-friendly transportation with good owner satisfaction, the Elantra makes sense; if you want the stronger all-around compact car and can spend more, the Civic is the better pick.
