CarGurus Analysis: 2017 GMC Yukon XL

Summary
With 796 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,303.00, 31.9% of 2017 GMC Yukons XLs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 GMC Yukon XL 4.8 / 5 stars.
57.8% of 2017 Yukon XL models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 GMC Yukon XL stands out as a full-size SUV built around space, towing-friendly hardware, and a traditional truck-based feel. It rides on the third-generation Yukon XL platform, which uses a solid rear axle and a higher cargo area floor than car-based crossovers, and its long-wheelbase design gives it more room for third-row passengers and cargo. For buyers who need a large SUV that can carry people and gear with ease, that combination is the Yukon XL’s core appeal.
For 2017, the base Yukon XL SLE came standard with a 5.3L V8 engine, eight-passenger seating, 18-inch aluminum wheels, an eight-inch infotainment screen, three-zone climate control, a Bose audio system, and OnStar technology. It also offered a Driver Alert Package with forward collision alert and automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane keep assist, lane-change alert, and a vibrating safety alert seat. The SLT added more comfort and convenience, including a hands-free power liftgate, power adjustable pedals, a heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, heated second-row seats with power-folding functionality, and leather seating surfaces.
The Denali trim is what gives the 2017 GMC Yukon XL its luxury edge. It came with the larger 6.2L V8 engine, magnetic ride control suspension, 20-inch aluminum wheels, an upgraded Bose audio system, and a chrome grille, while the Denali Touring Package added a sunroof, head-up display, navigation, and a rear-seat entertainment system. For 2017, automatic low-speed emergency braking was added, and the head-up display became standard on the Denali. The main tradeoff is that fuel economy is not a strength, but for shoppers prioritizing space, comfort, and strong performance in a large family SUV, the 2017 Yukon XL remains a compelling choice.

I really like this new to me Yukon XL. With 4kids and a big dog my old crew cab truck was starting to get pretty crammed. Now we have plenty of space and I don’t lose much storage from the bed with back of the truck to be labor to store gear or fold some of the rear seats down if I need more storage. With the racks for my kayaks on the top we’re all set for summer trips.

How much does the 2017 GMC Yukon XL cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $20,398 |
| Year-Round Low | $20,299.91 |
| Year-Round High | $22,888.90 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $22,883 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.86% |
Prices have softened 10.86% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 796 listings available, which suggests a solid amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $20,299.91, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 GMC Yukon XL a good car?
Yes — the 4.8/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Reviewers consistently praise the spacious interior, luxury features, and strong performance for family trips and towing. That makes it a strong fit if you want a full-size SUV with room for people and gear, especially when you value traditional truck-based capability over crossover-like driving manners. With 27.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 GMC Yukon XL reliable?
Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback also points to a dependable ownership experience, with owners describing the vehicle as strong for family use and towing over the long term. That kind of praise matters for a used full-size SUV, because it suggests you can count on it for regular hauling and road-trip duty. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure prior use and maintenance history line up with the vehicle’s size and workload.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 GMC Yukon XL?
At 56.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report on any candidate before you get too far into the process. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on suspension, brakes, tires, and any signs of uneven wear or repair quality. Because this is a large, family-oriented SUV, focus on overall condition and maintenance records as much as mileage.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 GMC Yukon XL?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile opportunities.
- Deal availability: 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 796 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.86% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 56.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,299.91, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 GMC Yukon XL's resale value?
The current average of $20,398 sits slightly below last year's $22,883.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy with less near-term depreciation pressure than you might have seen a year ago. For a future seller, that also means your resale outcome will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the vehicle has been maintained. Strong demand for large SUVs can help, but buyers will still compare your listing closely against cleaner examples.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 GMC Yukon XL or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 56.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.86% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $18,142, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $20,398 average.
- It adds useful convenience and safety upgrades while keeping the same space-first appeal.
The bottom line: You should start with the 2017 if you want the stronger current-market value and a well-liked ownership experience. If your priority is spending less upfront, the 2016 is the better secondary path because it undercuts the 2017’s average price while still delivering the core Yukon XL strengths.
