Is the 2017 GMC Sierra 2500HD a good car?

The 2017 GMC Sierra 2500HD stands out as a heavy-duty pickup that blends work-truck capability with a more upscale feel than many rivals. GMC positions the Sierra 2500HD with a broader range of trim levels and upscale options than the related Silverado 2500HD, and the brand’s “Professional Grade” approach gives it a more polished character. For you, that means this truck makes the most sense if you want heavy-duty capability without giving up a more refined cabin and feature set.

It also offers a strong mix of practical and comfort-focused equipment, including Bluetooth, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and wifi hotspot accessibility through the GMC infotainment system. Higher trims can add a Bose Premium audio system, power-adjustable front seats, chrome grille trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, and power-folding tailgate options. With 28.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 GMC Sierra 2500HD reliable?

The 2017 GMC Sierra 2500HD offers a strong feature set for a heavy-duty truck, and its appeal comes from combining serious capability with a more upscale presentation than many rivals. For you, that means it can be a compelling used choice if you want a truck that feels well equipped while still doing heavy-duty work.

At the same time, used examples can suffer from issues such as check engine lights, infotainment sluggishness, rough or delayed shifts, electrical glitches, MultiPro tailgate problems, and faulty trailer brake controllers. For long-term ownership, that makes careful inspection and maintenance history especially important so you can reduce the risk of expensive repairs.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 GMC Sierra 2500HD?

At 68.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks for body repairs, warning lights, transmission behavior, and electrical or infotainment issues. Focus closely on overall condition, because heavy-duty trucks can hide hard use even when they look clean in photos.

If you find a listing below $34,111, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 GMC Sierra 2500HD's resale value?

The current average of $34,266 sits slightly below last year's $36,127.

That tells you the market has eased, which can help you buy more confidently now if you plan to keep the truck for a while. For a future seller, the softer pricing suggests resale value may be more sensitive to condition, mileage, and equipment than it would be in a stronger market.

Should I buy a 2017 GMC Sierra 2500HD or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 28.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 68.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.15% compared with last year.

The bottom line: You should buy the 2017 if you want a heavy-duty Sierra with a more upscale feel and you can verify condition carefully. If you’re more price-sensitive, a nearby model year may give you a lower entry point, but the 2017 remains the better fit when you value the balance of capability, features, and market softness.
