Is the 2017 GMC Canyon a good car?

Yes — the 4.67/5 user rating and 7.17/10 expert rating both point to a strong overall showing. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10. Drivers repeatedly praise the Canyon’s attractive design, excellent fuel economy, and comfortable ride, and the overview also frames it as a midsize pickup that gives you serious capability in a smaller footprint. That makes it a fit if you want truck utility without stepping up to a larger full-size model. 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.

Is the 2017 GMC Canyon reliable?

Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. User feedback also points to a truck that feels dependable in daily use, with praise for its smooth ride, good fuel economy, and the diesel option’s mileage. The expert performance notes reinforce that sense of durability by describing the Canyon as stiff, heavy, and ready for abuse, which is the kind of character many truck shoppers want for long-term ownership. If you’re buying used, the main risk is less about outright fragility and more about finding one that has been maintained well and hasn’t been worked harder than its condition suggests.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 GMC Canyon?

At 64.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a hands-on inspection of body panels, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because this is a truck that may have been used for towing or hauling, condition matters as much as mileage. Pay close attention to cabin wear, bed condition, and whether the truck’s equipment matches the trim you’re considering.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: Denali adds chrome exterior details, 20-inch wheels, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a wireless charging pad, a Bose premium sound system, and an 8-inch infotainment screen with navigation. It also brings forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning, while the base truck lacks some of those upscale and safety features.
• Powertrain: You can choose a gasoline V6 or a turbocharged diesel 4-cylinder. The diesel improves fuel economy and towing capability, while the V6 is described as robust and satisfying.
• Safety package: Denali models include forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning, while the truck also comes with a reversing camera, Teen Driver technology, and Rear Seat Reminder. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and automatic emergency braking are not offered.
• Infotainment: IntelliLink uses an 8-inch screen on Denali, with a responsive touchscreen, logical menus, and smartphone projection capability. The system also supports Siri Eyes Free and a wireless charging pad on Denali.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 is rated at 19 mpg in combined driving, and the diesel improves combined fuel economy by 4 miles per gallon.

Which 2017 GMC Canyon trim should I buy?

The 2017 GMC Canyon is offered in 1 trim level: Denali.

Here's the short version:

The Denali is the trim that clearly stands out here because it layers on the most comfort, convenience, and appearance upgrades. You get the upscale exterior treatment, the larger 8-inch infotainment screen, navigation, heated and ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and the premium audio system. If you want the most complete version of this truck and value features over price, this is the one to target.

The safety package note is important: Denali adds forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning, but the truck still does not offer blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, or automatic emergency braking.

• Inventory: There are 709 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.75% compared with last year.

What is the 2017 GMC Canyon's resale value?

The current average of $20,141 sits slightly below last year's $20,499.

That kind of decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer now but may temper future resale gains if you plan to sell soon. The Canyon’s pricing still sits in a relatively tight range, which can support stability if demand stays steady. Strong owner satisfaction also helps keep interest alive in the used market, especially for shoppers who want a capable midsize truck with a premium feel.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 GMC Canyon safe?

The 2017 GMC Canyon earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, mainly due to its three-star rollover resistance score.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

The Canyon’s safety equipment includes a reversing camera, Teen Driver technology, Rear Seat Reminder, automatic collision notification through OnStar, and, on Denali, forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning. The bigger caveat is that it does not offer blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, or automatic emergency braking, which are important omissions if safety tech is a priority.

Should I buy a 2017 GMC Canyon or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 32.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 64.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.75% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 stands out for its strong towing-and-hauling focus in a compact midsize package.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $18,337, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $20,141 average.
• It was part of the refreshed midsize-truck revival and appealed to buyers wanting a domestic alternative in a smaller truck.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger all-around package and are comfortable paying a bit more, the 2017 is the better target. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly path and still gives you the core Canyon formula.
