Why it stands out
The 2017 Ford Mustang stands out because it sits in the sixth generation, which was introduced for the 2015 model year with a major redesign. Ford gave it a sleeker, smoother look, kept the coupe and soft-top convertible body styles, and added a new electric system for opening and closing the convertible top. It also marked the first time Ford produced and marketed the Mustang for a global audience, and it was the first Mustang to feature Ford’s EcoBoost engine lineup. A new independent rear suspension was another key part of the redesign, helping define this generation as a more modern take on the classic pony car.
For 2017, the Mustang’s appeal comes from its broad range of powertrains and transmissions. Base cars use Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder engine, while other available engines include a 3.7-liter V6, the 5.0-liter Coyote V8, and two versions of the 5.2-liter V8. Depending on the engine, buyers could choose from two six-speed manuals, six- and 10-speed automatics, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. That variety is a big part of the Mustang’s charm: it can be configured as an accessible performance car or a much more serious muscle machine.
There are tradeoffs, though. Models with the EcoBoost engine are known for problems with oil consumption and potential head gasket failure, and the transmission may be prone to slippage. For shoppers, that means a 2017 Mustang can be a compelling used performance car, but condition and maintenance history matter a lot. Its combination of iconic styling, rear-wheel-drive layout, and wide performance spread makes it distinctive, while the reported issues are worth keeping in mind before buying.

Car had nice features and low mileage. The color and wheels weren't my favorite, but that's a personal preference. The price seemed a bit high (I see now they just increased it!), but a nice car overall.

The blower motor needs replacing. The check engine light was on. Felt like it was misfiring when you punch it. Last oil change sticker read last year. Afraid of deeper engine issues.

How much does the 2017 Ford Mustang cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $20,924 |
| Year-Round Low | $20,063 |
| Year-Round High | $22,303 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $22,062 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −5.16% |
Prices have softened 5.16% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,729 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2017 Ford Mustang a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Ford Mustang earns a 4.4/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its powerful performance, fun driving experience, and stylish design, and many like the range of engine choices that let you shop for either a more accessible performance car or a more serious muscle setup. The main tradeoffs are a cramped backseat and an infotainment system that some owners find outdated, so it fits you best if driving enjoyment matters more than rear-seat comfort or tech polish. With 28.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a car that many drivers feel good about living with over time, especially when it comes to performance and overall enjoyment. The strongest reliability takeaway is that condition and maintenance history matter, since used examples can vary widely depending on how they were cared for. For long-term ownership, you should be selective and focus on well-documented cars that have been maintained consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford Mustang?
At 55.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether the car has any accident, title, or service-record issues. A pre-purchase inspection should be a priority, especially if you’re considering a higher-performance trim or a car with incomplete maintenance records. Focus on overall condition, signs of hard use, and whether the car has been kept up properly, since those factors matter more than mileage alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Ford Mustang?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,729 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.16% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,063, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $20,924 sits slightly below last year's $22,062.
That softer pricing suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more affordably now but may also limit short-term upside if you plan to resell soon. For future sellers, the current trend means your return will depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained. Strong demand for this model’s performance and style should still help support buyer interest.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 28.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.16% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $18,592, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $20,924 average.
- It adds updated tech and fresh appearance packages.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $22,347, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $20,924 average.
- It brings more refinement and stronger mechanical and tech improvements.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the best fit if you want a strong mix of price, owner satisfaction, and broad market availability. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2016 is the value play; if you want a newer-feeling Mustang and can spend more, the 2018 is the upgrade path.
