CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Ford Mustang
overall

Summary
With 1,791 currently listed for sale and an average price of $21,753.00, 30.5% of 2017 Ford Mustangs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Ford Mustang 4.42 / 5 stars.
56.6% of 2017 Mustang models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Ford Mustang stands out as a classic rear-wheel-drive pony car that still offers coupe and convertible body styles, giving buyers a familiar formula with broad appeal. It sits within the sixth generation, which was introduced for the 2015 model year and brought a sleeker, smoother design, a new independent rear suspension, and Ford’s EcoBoost engine lineup. That combination helps explain why the Mustang remains such a distinctive choice: it blends heritage, everyday usability, and a more modern chassis than earlier versions.
For 2017, the Mustang’s appeal comes from its range of engines and transmissions. The EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder powers base Mustangs, while other available engines include a 3.7-liter V6, the 5.0-liter Coyote V8, and two versions of the 5.2-liter V8. Depending on the engine, buyers could choose from two six-speed manuals, six- and 10-speed automatics, and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. That breadth makes the car easy to tailor to different priorities, whether the goal is accessible performance or a more serious muscle-car experience.
There are also a few cautions to keep in mind. Models with the EcoBoost engine are known for problems with oil consumption and potential head gasket failure, and the transmission may be prone to slippage. Even so, the 2017 Mustang remains attractive because it delivers the Mustang formula in a relatively modern package, with strong performance potential and enough variety to suit a wide range of shoppers.

Car had nice features and low mileage. The color and wheels weren't my favorite, but that's a personal preference. The price seemed a bit high (I see now they just increased it!), but a nice car overall.

The blower motor needs replacing. The check engine light was on. Felt like it was misfiring when you punch it. Last oil change sticker read last year. Afraid of deeper engine issues.

Is the 2017 Ford Mustang a good car?
Generally — 4.42/5 is a strong owner rating for this model year. Owners most often praise its powerful performance, fun driving experience, and stylish design, and many also like the range of engine choices that lets you prioritize speed or everyday usability. The Mustang’s coupe and convertible body styles also give you a familiar, broad-appeal setup if you want a sporty car with some flexibility. With 29.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.42/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car many people feel good about living with over time, especially when they value performance and driving enjoyment. That said, reliability-minded shoppers should pay close attention to maintenance history and condition, since long-term ownership risk can rise if prior care was inconsistent.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford Mustang?
At 56.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection so you can catch hidden damage or repair quality issues. Focus closely on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of past collision work, since those details matter more when a large share of the market has accident history.

What is the 2017 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $21,828 sits slightly below last year's $22,313.
That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more carefully now and may also limit how much immediate upside a future seller sees. Even so, a well-kept Mustang with strong demand characteristics should remain easier to move than a less desirable sports car. Condition, mileage, and documented care will matter a lot if you want to protect value later.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.42/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?

- At 56.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.17% compared with last year.

- It blends heritage touches with fresh packages and a fun, smooth ride.
Consider the 2018 if:

If your budget is tighter, the 2016 is the better price-sensitive alternative. If you want a more refined feel and can spend a bit more, the 2018 is the stronger upgrade path.
