CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Ford Escape
overall

Summary
With 190 currently listed for sale near Anaheim, CA and an average price of $10,519, 19.5% of 2017 Ford Escapes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Ford Escape 4.67 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
92.6% of 2017 Escape models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Ford Escape stands out because Ford gave it a significant mid-cycle refresh, adding a facelift and interior enhancements that made the cabin more functional and more user-friendly. The biggest changes were the two new EcoBoost engines, along with a significant improvement to safety features and technology. That combination gives the Escape a more modern feel than before and helps it stay competitive in a crowded crossover market.
For buyers, the appeal is a compact crossover that aims to balance everyday usability with updated features. Owner feedback also points to comfort, handling, and cargo space as strengths, and many drivers praise its performance and the available features. On the other hand, some owners have raised concerns about resale value, interior smell, and hatch door alignment, so it is worth paying attention to condition and history when shopping for one.

I bought a 2017 Escape in 2019 with 30,000 miles on it from a lease. I’ve never been a ford fan or even owned one, but I stepped out on a limb and this became the best car I’ve ever owned! Minimal maintenance and repairs and just a great car!! I put 160,000 miles on this car with zero issues. I would definitely buy it again.

I had a 2017 Ford Escape SE with the Sport Appearance package. I loved it so much, Im looking for one just like it. Most impressive was its handling in an accident. Mine was unfortunately totaled, but it did great, deploying the proper air bags, automatically shutting the engine down and putting itself in crash mode, automatically turning the flashers on, and immediately dialing 911 FOR me. I was spun into a ditch and the car stayed upright. Its well balanced and handles well, and the tech features you can get on it are pretty top notch. With the Ford Pass app, you can start your vehicle remotely, lock your doors a mile a way if you need to. I love it. The only short side for me had to deal with the tires on the Sport Appearance package. I felt like they didnt handle wet roads as well as I would have liked, and the thinner tires provided a slightly less smooth ride. I could feel the road a little more with them, but I loved the look of them and it was worth the sacrifice for me.

It is a solid vehicle. A better value than its competitors. I know it does not hold its resale value as well as the Rav 4 or CRV. But I have never purchased a car where selling it after years of use was ever a consideration in buying it. Good horse power. Well featured. Fords second best seller for a reason.

How much does the 2017 Ford Escape cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $10,411 |
| Year-Round Low | $10,411 |
| Year-Round High | $11,083 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $11,077 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −6.02% |
Prices have softened 6.02% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 4,197 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
Is the 2017 Ford Escape a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Ford Escape earns a 4.67/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its comfort, handling, and cargo space, and many also like the available features and stronger performance. That lines up with the Escape’s role as a compact crossover that aims to balance everyday usability with updated tech and a more modern feel after its refresh.
The market also shows 30.4% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Ford Escape reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a vehicle that many drivers find dependable in daily use, with comfort and performance coming through as recurring strengths. The expert evaluation also describes the Escape as a good value with a strong mix of technology, safety, and fuel economy, which supports the case for a well-rounded ownership experience.
Ford’s coverage includes a 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, and 5 years/60,000 miles of roadside assistance.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is condition-specific wear and prior-owner maintenance quality, so a careful inspection matters.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford Escape?
At 68.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has any accident or repair history. Pay close attention to body alignment, interior condition, and how the hatch, doors, and trim pieces fit and operate. It’s also smart to confirm that the technology and safety features work as expected, since those are major selling points for this model year.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base S is the most stripped-down version, while the SE adds more convenience and feature content, and the Titanium brings the most upscale equipment. The base trim’s infotainment setup is a notable weak point, so you should compare feature gaps carefully if you want a more user-friendly cabin.
- Powertrain: You get a choice of a standard 2.5-liter 4-cylinder, a turbocharged 1.5-liter EcoBoost, or a 2.0-liter twin-scroll turbocharged EcoBoost. The EcoBoost engines are described as offering strong performance along with good fuel efficiency.
- Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes a rear-view camera, traction control, 4-wheel antilock brakes, brake assist, roll stability control, and mirrors with blind-spot integration. Higher trims and options add features such as lane-keeping alert, lane-keeping aid, driver alert aid, adaptive cruise control, and collision warning with brake support.
- Infotainment: Sync 3 brings Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the system is described as much easier to use than the base setup. The Titanium gets a 10-speaker Sony audio system and standard Sync 3 and Sync Connect, while the base system is more basic and less satisfying.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.0-liter EcoBoost in 4-wheel-drive form is rated at 20 mpg city/27 highway/23 combined, and the expert evaluation notes that the Escape offers good fuel economy for its performance level.
Which 2017 Ford Escape trim should I buy?
The 2017 Ford Escape is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE, Titanium.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the least expensive way into the Escape, but it is also the most basic. You get the standard 2.5-liter engine, cloth seating, and a simple audio setup, so it makes sense mainly if price matters most and you can live without the nicer tech and convenience features.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds a stronger feature mix without jumping to the top price point. You get the 1.5-liter EcoBoost, more comfort equipment, and access to desirable options like Sync 3, a hands-free liftgate, and 4-wheel drive.
- Titanium: This is the trim to choose if you want the most upscale Escape experience. It adds the richest standard equipment, including Sync 3, Sync Connect, a 10-speaker Sony audio system, leather-trimmed seats, and more advanced safety options.
Safety-package note: the Titanium is the trim where the most advanced driver-assistance features are concentrated, including available blind spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert and lane-keeping features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Ford Escape?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,197 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.02% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 68.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,411, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Ford Escape's resale value?
The current average of $10,411 sits slightly below last year's $11,077.
That downward move suggests the Escape has become more affordable for buyers, which can make it a tougher vehicle for future sellers to command a premium. If you own one, condition and maintenance history will matter more than ever when it comes time to resell.
The good news is that the model’s strong owner satisfaction helps support demand. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Ford Escape safe?
The 2017 Ford Escape earns five-star ratings from NHTSA in all but the rollover test, where it earns a four-star rating. It also earns a Good rating from IIHS overall, with an Acceptable result in small overlap front, an Acceptable headlight rating, and a Marginal LATCH rating.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes a rear-view camera, multiple airbags, brake assist, traction control, 4-wheel antilock brakes, and mirrors with blind-spot integration. Available upgrades include bi-xenon HID headlights, lane-keeping alert, lane-keeping aid, driver alert aid, adaptive cruise control, and collision warning with brake support.
The main caveat is the weaker IIHS LATCH result, so if you plan to use child seats, you should check installation carefully during your test drive.
Should I buy a 2017 Ford Escape or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 68.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.02% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Ford’s mid-cycle refresh brought a more modern cabin, stronger tech, and improved safety features.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $9,004, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,411 average.
- It is a well-rounded compact crossover with agile handling, stout engine options, and comfortable seating.
The bottom line: If you want the more modern Escape with better tech and safety content, the 2017 is the better pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 is the value play and still delivers the core Escape strengths.
