Why it stands out
The 2017 Ford Edge stands out as a well-sized crossover that sits between the smaller Ford Escape and the larger Explorer and Flex. It offers seating for five passengers, ample cargo room, and storage cubbies galore, making it a practical choice for busy families. Rather than trying to be a rugged off-road vehicle, it is aimed at everyday use, with a manageable size and a family-friendly layout.
Stylistically, the Edge is sleek and attractive, though it is not especially dramatic or eye-catching. That restrained design may appeal to buyers who want a crossover that looks polished without being flashy. The overall impression is of a vehicle that focuses on usefulness, comfort, and space more than on making a bold visual statement.

I never had a problem with my 2017 Edge. At 65000 miles I got a notice from Ford that due to engine problems they needed to replace engine. Brought it in when they got the engine in stock. No charge. Then got a notice about the transmission. Brought it in. No charge. Car now has 95,000 miles. No problems so far except new battery which Aaa replaced for $85. mechanic told me Ford Edge is the best car Ford makes.

This car is a great car for someone who lives in a winter climate. It has great clearance and with snow tires can easily go through a foot of snow with the all-wheel-drive model with no worries! I like that has space for my kids and my stuff. I like that it’s comfortable and it’s not too big. I like that it’s easy on gas!

The market also looks reasonably supportive, with 27.5% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2017 Ford Edge reliable?
Owners rate it 4.43/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a reliable vehicle with a lot to offer for the price, and it also describes the Edge as comfortable and smooth-riding over time. On the expert side, the ride is described as composed and responsive, with well-timed shifts and minimal road or wind noise, which supports the sense that it’s built for steady everyday use.
The main ownership risk for used buyers is that some drivers reported engine issues, so a careful pre-purchase inspection matters.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Ford Edge?
At 67.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of bodywork, safety equipment, and any signs of prior repair quality. Because this model is often bought as a family crossover, you’ll want to focus on how well the cabin, electronics, and driver-assistance features have held up in real use.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base model comes with cloth seats, a 4.2-inch screen, and a reversing camera, while higher trims add features like heated seats, leather trim, a larger touchscreen, and more convenience equipment.
- Powertrain: The lineup includes a 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder, an available 3.5-liter V6, and a 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 in the Sport; the base FWD setup is the most efficient.
- Safety package: Available features include lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, forward-collision warning, and a 180-degree front camera, but many of these are reserved for higher trims.
- Infotainment: Sync 3 brings an 8-inch touchscreen, two USB ports, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, while the base system uses a 4.2-inch screen and a single USB port.
- Fuel efficiency: The Sport is EPA-estimated at 17 mpg city/24 highway, while the base engine with FWD is EPA-estimated at 21 mpg city/29 highway.
Which 2017 Ford Edge trim should I buy?
The 2017 Ford Edge is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, SEL, Titanium, Sport.
Here's the short version:
- SE: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Edge formula with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost engine, basic Sync infotainment, and the essential family-friendly layout. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and can live without the nicer tech and comfort upgrades.
- SEL: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds meaningful comfort and convenience upgrades, including available heated seats, dual-zone climate control, Sync 3, and more available driver-assistance features. If you want the sweet spot between price and equipment, this is the one to focus on.
- Titanium: This trim leans into comfort and tech with standard leather-trimmed seating, Sync 3, a 12-speaker Sony audio system, and more upscale cabin equipment. It suits you if you want a more premium-feeling Edge without jumping to the Sport.
- Sport: This is the performance-oriented choice, with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6, standard AWD, adaptive steering, and a sport-tuned suspension. It’s the right pick if driving enjoyment matters more to you than fuel economy or value.
Higher trims are where you’ll find most of the available safety and convenience features, so base-model shoppers should compare equipment carefully.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Ford Edge?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and compare listings.
- Deal availability: 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,905 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.02% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 67.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,272.25, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Ford Edge's resale value?
The current average of $12,503 sits slightly below last year's $13,447.
That price movement suggests the Edge has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. A softer market can also make it easier to find a well-equipped example without paying peak pricing.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.43/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Ford Edge safe?
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration gave it an overall five-star rating with only one four-star rating for rollover resistance. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it a Good in all crash tests except for small front overlap, in which it received an Acceptable rating.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The Edge includes available lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, forward-collision warning, and a 180-degree front camera with washer, but many of those features are reserved for higher trims rather than the base model. It also lacks front crash-mitigation technology, so it is not eligible for the Top Safety Pick+ rating.
Should I buy a 2017 Ford Edge or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 67.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.02% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.43/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It offers a practical, family-friendly layout with seating for five, ample cargo room, and a manageable size.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $11,290, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $12,503 average.
- It appeals if you want Ford’s performance-minded Edge Sport with a more aggressive personality.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the better all-around pick if you want the strongest mix of price, comfort, and everyday usefulness. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2016 can make sense, but you should be especially selective about condition and equipment.
