CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Dodge Durango
overall

Summary
With 1,306 currently listed for sale and an average price of $14,953, 27.9% of 2017 Dodge Durangos for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Dodge Durango 4.56 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
61.0% of 2017 Durango models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Dodge Durango stands out as a full-size SUV that blends family-friendly space with real utility. It has room for up to 7 passengers and can tow up to 7,400 pounds, while still offering a crossover-like ride and the amenities a busy family needs to get through the day. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want something that can handle daily errands, road trips, and heavier-duty tasks without giving up comfort.
Inside, the 2017 Durango can range from basic to beautiful depending on trim, but even the highest versions do not aim for a refined luxury feel. Instead, the cabin keeps a rugged character that matches the Dodge brand, and the focus stays on function rather than appearance. At the same time, it can be very well equipped, with features to keep kids entertained and adults comfortable. Owners also praise its powerful V8 engine, stylish design, spacious interior, and smooth ride, though some have concerns about safety ratings, particularly crash tests.

It’s a great vehicle. I love the looks. I love the tow capacity: I love the features and room. The 3.6/8 speed is a great combo. But… the small offset crash rating is a disaster. And as a dad of teens it made me cross it off my list. Why hasn’t dodge addresses this? Even mitigated it?

Yes — 4.56/5 owners’ rating points to strong owner satisfaction, and the expert rating is 7.17/10. The model scores 8/10 across Performance, Form and function, and Technology.
Owners consistently praise the powerful V8 engine, spacious interior, and smooth ride, and they also like the range of features available across the lineup. For you, that means the Durango makes the most sense if you want a family SUV that can handle daily errands, road trips, and heavier-duty tasks without giving up comfort. With 30.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market also gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Dodge Durango reliable?
Owners rate it 4.56/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also points to a reliable, trouble-free ownership experience for many drivers, with praise centered on the Durango’s strong everyday usability and durable-feeling character. The expert evaluation reinforces that dependable impression by describing the SUV as confident, controlled, and well suited to heavy highway traffic and family duty.
On the ownership side, the included 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty and roadside assistance help reduce early risk, but used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history and wear items.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Dodge Durango?
At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with optional equipment. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re shopping.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup ranges from the more basic SXT to the better-equipped GT, Citadel, and R/T, and the base SXT is limited to five-passenger seating. Higher trims add more comfort, convenience, and appearance upgrades, so you should compare equipment carefully if you want the best value.
- Powertrain: You can choose a 3.6-liter V6 or a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The V6 is the efficiency-minded choice, while the V8 brings stronger towing and more effortless acceleration.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes multiple airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, rain brake support, ready alert braking, and trailer-sway control. Available driver aids include adaptive cruise control with stop, advanced brake assist, blind-spot monitoring with cross-path detection, forward-collision warning with active braking, ParkSense rear park assist and rear backup camera, and LaneSense lane-departure warning.
- Infotainment: Uconnect comes with either a 5.0-inch or 8.4-inch touchscreen, and available upgrades include SiriusXM services, a 9-speaker Alpine audio system, and a BeatsAudio premium sound system. There is no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility.
- Fuel efficiency: The V6 AWD is rated 18/25 mpg, and the Hemi V8 is rated 14/22 mpg.
Which 2017 Dodge Durango trim should I buy?
The 2017 Dodge Durango is offered in 4 trim levels: SXT, GT, Citadel, and R/T.
Here's the short version:
- SXT: This is the entry point, and it gives you the Durango’s core space and utility at the lowest starting price. It includes the V6, three-zone climate control, rear-seat outlets, a 60/40 split-fold second row, and a 5.0-inch Uconnect screen, but it is limited to five-passenger seating.
- GT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds meaningful everyday upgrades without jumping all the way to the pricier luxury-oriented trims. You get an 8.4-inch screen, power driver and passenger seats, optional second-row captain’s chairs, optional third-row seating for up to seven, plus ParkSense rear park assist and a rear backup camera.
- Citadel: This is the comfort-focused choice if you want the most upscale feel short of the performance model. It adds ventilated Nappa leather seats, a sunroof, navigation, and an Alpine premium audio system, and it can be paired with the V8 for stronger towing.
- R/T: This is the performance-oriented trim, with the Hemi V8, sport suspension, performance steering, and upgraded brakes. It’s the right pick if you want the Durango’s strongest acceleration and a more athletic driving feel.
The safety package is broad across the lineup, but some advanced driver-assistance features remain optional rather than standard.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Dodge Durango?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,304 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.64% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 61.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,762, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Dodge Durango's resale value?
The current average of $14,889 sits slightly below last year's $16,120.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at a strong price now, you reduce the chance of taking a bigger hit later. The Durango’s broad appeal as a family SUV with real towing ability should help support demand, especially for well-equipped examples.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Dodge Durango safe?
The 2017 Dodge Durango earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in side crash testing from NHTSA.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes multiple airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, rain brake support, ready alert braking, and trailer-sway control. Available driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with stop, advanced brake assist, blind-spot monitoring with cross-path detection, forward-collision warning with active braking, ParkSense rear park assist and rear backup camera, and LaneSense lane-departure warning.
A key caveat is that the model year did not receive an IIHS test result here, and the NHTSA frontal and rollover results are weaker than the side-crash score. That makes a careful inspection and a close look at available safety equipment especially important if safety is a top priority for you.
Should I buy a 2017 Dodge Durango or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 61.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.64% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 balances family space, towing strength, and available tech without the newer model year’s added connectivity.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $13,653, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,889 average.
- It emphasizes rear-wheel-drive utility and added sport-oriented updates.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $17,930, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $14,889 average.
- It adds Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a standard reversing camera.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, capability, and available inventory, the 2017 is the smart default. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2016 can save you money, while the 2018 is worth considering if modern smartphone integration matters more than upfront cost.
