Is the 2017 Dodge Durango reliable?

The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Durango feels confident and controlled on the road, with solid braking and a crossover-like manner that helps it feel less cumbersome than its size suggests.

The included 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain limited warranty and 5 years/60,000 miles of roadside assistance add some ownership reassurance, but used buyers should still pay close attention to maintenance history and how hard the vehicle was worked.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Dodge Durango?

At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with towing use. Focus on overall condition, signs of wear in the cabin, and whether the equipment you want is actually present on the specific trim you’re looking at.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Durango offers four trim levels—SXT, GT, Citadel, and R/T. The base SXT is the most stripped-down, with a 5.0-inch screen, a 6-speaker audio system, and seating for five, while the GT adds an 8.4-inch screen, power front seats, and rear park assist plus a backup camera. The Citadel brings a more upscale feel with ventilated Nappa leather, a sunroof, navigation, and premium audio, while the R/T is the performance-focused choice with sport suspension, performance steering, and unique interior treatments.
• Powertrain: You can choose a 3.6-liter V6 or a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The V6 is the efficiency-minded option and can tow up to 6,200 pounds, while the V8 delivers 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of torque with towing up to 7,400 pounds.
• Safety package: Every Durango includes multiple airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, rain brake support, ready alert braking, and trailer-sway control. Available driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with stop, advanced brake assist, blind-spot monitoring with cross-path detection, forward-collision warning with active braking, ParkSense rear park assist and rear backup camera, and LaneSense lane-departure warning.
• Infotainment: Uconnect comes with either a 5.0-inch or 8.4-inch touchscreen, a standard 6-speaker audio system, USB and auxiliary inputs, and two 12-volt outlets. Available upgrades include SiriusXM services, a 9-speaker Alpine system with a subwoofer and 506-watt amplifier, and a BeatsAudio premium sound system. There is no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto compatibility.
• Fuel efficiency: The V6 AWD is rated at 18/25 mpg, while the Hemi V8 is rated at 14/22 mpg.

Which 2017 Dodge Durango trim should I buy?

The 2017 Dodge Durango is offered in 4 trim levels: SXT, GT, Citadel, and R/T.

Here's the short version:

• SXT: This is the value-oriented starting point, but it’s also the most basic. You get the V6, a 5.0-inch Uconnect screen, and a 6-speaker audio system, plus five-passenger seating. It makes sense if you want the Durango’s space and capability without paying for extras.
• GT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a more useful equipment mix without jumping all the way to luxury pricing. You get the upgraded 8.4-inch screen, power front seats, rear park assist, and a backup camera, along with optional seating for up to 7.
• Citadel: This is the trim to choose if you want the most comfort and convenience. It adds ventilated Nappa leather, a sunroof, navigation, and premium audio, and it can be paired with the V8 for maximum towing strength.
• R/T: This is the performance choice. It comes only with the Hemi V8 and adds sport suspension, performance steering, and unique interior details, so it suits you best if driving character matters as much as family utility.

Safety equipment is broad across the lineup, but the more advanced driver-assistance features are optional rather than standard.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Dodge Durango?

This is a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,286 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.10% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 61.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $14,720, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Dodge Durango's resale value?

The current average of $14,893 sits slightly below last year's $16,030.

That price movement suggests the Durango has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. A lower entry cost gives you more room to hold value, especially if you choose a well-equipped trim that buyers tend to want later. Strong condition and clean history will matter a lot, since shoppers in this segment often compare equipment, mileage, and accident history closely.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Dodge Durango safe?

The 2017 Dodge Durango earns four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in side crash testing from NHTSA.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

Every Durango includes multiple airbags, electronic stability control, hill-start assist, rain brake support, ready alert braking, and trailer-sway control. Available safety tech includes adaptive cruise control with stop, advanced brake assist, blind-spot monitoring with cross-path detection, forward-collision warning with active braking, ParkSense rear park assist and rear backup camera, and LaneSense lane-departure warning.

The main caveat is that the crash-test results are not class-leading, so if safety is your top priority, you should pay close attention to the specific equipment on the listing you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2017 Dodge Durango or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 30.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 61.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.10% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 balances strong towing, roomy seating, and broad trim choice without the newer model-year price jump.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $13,513, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $14,893 average.
• It adds fresh wheels, more color choices, and a Sport mode that sharpens throttle response.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $17,462, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $14,893 average.
• It adds Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and a standard reversing camera.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, capability, and available equipment, the 2017 is the smart default. If you’re focused on saving money, the 2016 is the better value play. If you want newer infotainment and can spend more, the 2018 is the upgrade path to consider.
