What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Dodge Charger?

At 48.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has performance upgrades or a long list of options. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven tire wear, brake condition, and whether the car has been maintained as a daily driver or treated like a hard-driven muscle sedan.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Daytona treatment adds SRT-derived design details, a cold-air induction system with a functional hood scoop, heritage-inspired graphics, a Satin Black roof and rear spoiler treatment, wider 20-inch wheels, and interior upgrades. It also adds performance enhancements over the standard R/T and R/T Scat Pack versions.
• Powertrain: The Daytona 392 uses a 6.4-liter V8 with 485 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic, rear-wheel drive, and an electronic limited-slip differential. It is described as blisteringly quick and track-ready.
• Safety package: The Driver Confidence Group includes blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and HID headlights. Standard equipment includes a reversing camera, and optional safety features include adaptive cruise control with full-stop capability, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: The Charger gets an 8.4-inch Uconnect system with quicker startup and response, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Uconnect Access adds voice texting, remote start, door locking, vehicle finder, and a 3G Wi-Fi hotspot.
• Fuel efficiency: The Daytona 392 is EPA-rated at 15 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined.

Which 2017 Dodge Charger trim should I buy?

The 2017 Dodge Charger is offered in 2 trim levels: R/T and R/T Scat Pack.

Here's the short version:

• R/T: This is the starting point for the Daytona treatment and gives you the Charger’s core V8 personality with the Daytona styling and performance upgrades. It makes sense if you want the look and attitude without stepping all the way up the range.
• R/T Scat Pack: This is the better-value choice if you want the stronger Daytona 392 setup, since it adds the more powerful 6.4-liter V8 and the more serious performance hardware. If you care most about the Charger’s muscle-car character, this is the one to target.

The safety content notes that the Charger earns high crash-test marks overall, but the underlying architecture shows its age in the small offset frontal-impact test.

What is the 2017 Dodge Charger's resale value?

The current average of $18,274 sits slightly above last year's $18,011.

That year-over-year increase suggests the market has held up reasonably well for this model year. If you buy carefully and keep mileage and condition in check, you should have a decent shot at preserving value. The Charger’s strong enthusiast appeal helps support demand, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.72/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Dodge Charger safe?

The Charger earns 4- and 5-star ratings across the board from NHTSA, and the IIHS gives it high marks overall with a Marginal rating in the small offset frontal-impact test.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes a reversing camera, and Uconnect Access provides 911 Call for emergency assistance for 6 months before a subscription is required. Optional driver-assistance features include adaptive cruise control with full-stop capability, forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The main caveat is the Marginal IIHS result, which reflects the age of the Charger’s underlying structure.

Should I buy a 2017 Dodge Charger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 26.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 48.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.46% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4.72/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds a next-generation Uconnect system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $15,440, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $18,274 average.
• It is a more practical family sedan with a stronger value focus.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $18,558, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $18,274 average.
• It broadens the lineup with more trims, more power, and available all-wheel drive.

The bottom line: If you want the Charger’s strongest mix of personality, tech, and market availability, the 2017 is the sweet spot to start with. If price matters most, the 2016 is the better budget play; if you want more trim variety and newer-feeling breadth, the 2018 is worth a look.
