CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Dodge Challenger
overall

Summary
With 1,336 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,320.00, 29.8% of 2017 Dodge Challengers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Dodge Challenger 4.64 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
58.2% of 2017 Challenger models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Dodge Challenger stands out for leaning harder into retro muscle-car character than almost anything else on the road. Its design and cabin presentation are overtly nostalgic, and the modern Challenger’s orange-red seats reinforce that old-school attitude. For buyers who want a car that makes a visual statement and feels rooted in classic American performance, that personality is a major part of the appeal.
This model year also has a more approachable side, because all-wheel drive tones down the Challenger’s muscle with milder manners. That makes the 2017 Dodge Challenger sound less like a pure weekend toy and more like a car that can be easier to live with day to day. At the same time, owner feedback suggests the car is still valued for its powerful performance, comfort, and stylish design, while some drivers have noted that it can feel slightly underpowered for its size, can be expensive to fuel with premium gas, and may leave some buyers wanting more modern interior features.

Very retro! The SXT package with its 6 cylinder was plenty as the vehicle has plenty to keep it going, but it's more of a retro 70's showcar and still draws attention!

With 27.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Dodge Challenger reliable?
Owners rate it 4.64/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that many drivers find dependable and trouble-free over time, with repeated praise for its comfort, performance, and everyday usability. The expert drive notes also describe it as a valid-warranty vehicle with modern technology, which supports the sense that it’s built to be lived with rather than just admired.
The main ownership risk for used buyers is that some examples may have been driven hard or maintained inconsistently, so condition and service history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Dodge Challenger?
At 58% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage or modified example. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s equipment and wear match the seller’s story. Because this model can be bought in very different configurations, it’s worth checking that the features you want are actually present on the specific car you’re viewing.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The GT adds all-wheel drive and a more year-round-friendly setup, while the standard rear-wheel-drive trims keep the classic muscle-car character. Base-trim equipment is more limited, so check carefully for the comfort and convenience features you want.
- Powertrain: The GT pairs a 3.6-liter V6 with an 8-speed automatic and is tuned for smooth, quiet cruising. It’s the efficiency-minded choice, while the V8 models are the stronger straight-line performers.
- Safety package: The car includes a reversing camera as standard, while lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision alert are optional. Make sure the car you’re considering has the driver-assistance features you want.
- Infotainment: Uconnect 8.4 comes standard on the GT with navigation, real-time traffic, weather alerts, and onboard apps. The system also supports performance data displays, and the available Harman Kardon stereo adds 18 speakers.
- Fuel efficiency: The GT is rated at 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway, and the expert drive recorded around 22 mpg over 500 miles.
Which 2017 Dodge Challenger trim should I buy?
The 2017 Dodge Challenger is offered in 14 trim levels: SXT, GT, R/T, Hellcat, and additional trims referenced in the market data.
Here's the short version:
- SXT: This is the entry point if you want the Challenger’s styling and basic muscle-car presence at the lowest starting price. It makes sense if you care most about getting into the model and can live without the richer equipment found higher up.
- GT: This is the best-value choice if you want the most balanced mix of everyday usability and features. It adds all-wheel drive, the 3.6-liter V6, Uconnect 8.4 with navigation, and a quieter, more comfortable cruising character.
- R/T: Choose this if you want the stronger V8 character and are willing to spend more for it. It’s the better pick if performance matters more to you than all-weather practicality.
- Hellcat: This is the enthusiast choice for buyers who want the most extreme straight-line performance and are shopping for the top end of the lineup.
The GT is the trim that most clearly benefits from the available safety and convenience features, so check carefully for optional driver-assistance equipment if that matters to you.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Dodge Challenger?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,403 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.16% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 58.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $20,183.81, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Dodge Challenger's resale value?
The current average of $20,295 sits slightly below last year's $21,860.
That softer pricing suggests the model has become more accessible for used buyers, which can help keep demand steady in the near term. For a future seller, that means resale value will likely depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim desirability rather than broad market momentum alone. Well-kept examples with the right equipment should hold up better than neglected ones.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.64/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Dodge Challenger safe?
The 2017 Dodge Challenger earns the highest five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in the frontal crash test. It also received a Good rating from IIHS in the moderate front overlap and side crash tests, but scored Marginal on the small front overlap test and Acceptable on the roof strength and headrest/seat tests.
It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard reversing camera is a useful baseline feature, and optional driver-assistance equipment includes lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision alert. The main caveat is the weaker small-overlap result, which is worth keeping in mind if safety is a top priority.
Should I buy a 2017 Dodge Challenger or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 58% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.16% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.64/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 adds all-wheel drive in GT form, giving you a more usable year-round Challenger.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $24,836, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $20,295 average.
- It stays especially true to the Challenger’s retro muscle-car identity.
The bottom line: If you want the better value and a broader mix of usable features, the 2017 is the smarter starting point. If your priority is the most faithful retro-muscle personality and you’re willing to pay more for it, the 2016 remains worth a look.
