What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Dodge Challenger?

At 56.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or driven hard. Focus on body condition, tire wear, brake condition, and signs of inconsistent maintenance, since those can reveal how the car was treated. If you’re comparing multiple listings, the cleanest example with the best documentation is usually worth the extra effort.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The GT trim adds all-wheel drive, a quieter and smoother highway demeanor, and a more year-round-friendly setup than the rear-wheel-drive trims.
• Powertrain: The GT uses a 3.6-liter V6 with 305 horsepower and an 8-speed automatic, and it is tuned more for cruising than excitement.
• Safety package: The Challenger includes a reversing camera as standard, while lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision alert are optional.
• Infotainment: The Uconnect 8.4 system includes navigation, real-time traffic, weather alerts, and onboard apps, and the car also offers Performance Pages for vehicle data.
• Fuel efficiency: The GT is rated at 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway, and the expert drive recorded around 22 mpg over 500 miles.

Which 2017 Dodge Challenger trim should I buy?

The 2017 Dodge Challenger is offered in 14 trim levels: SXT, GT, R/T, R/T Shaker, R/T Plus, R/T Plus Shaker, T/A, T/A Plus, T/A 392, SRT 392, SRT Hellcat, SRT Hellcat Widebody, SRT Demon, and GT.

Here's the short version:

• SXT: This is the entry point if you want the Challenger’s style at the lowest starting price, but it’s the trim most likely to leave you wanting more equipment.
• GT: This is the best-value trim if you want the most usable all-around setup, because it adds AWD and a more relaxed, year-round personality without losing the Challenger’s character.
• R/T: Choose this if you want a stronger V8 experience and are willing to give up the GT’s all-weather advantage.
• R/T Shaker: This is for you if the shaker hood and extra visual attitude matter as much as the mechanical upgrade.
• R/T Plus: Pick this if you want a better-equipped V8 trim with more comfort and convenience features.
• R/T Plus Shaker: This is the choice if you want the added equipment of the Plus trim and the shaker hood’s old-school appeal.
• T/A: This trim leans into a more aggressive appearance and enthusiast flavor, making it a good fit if you care about style and presence.
• T/A Plus: Choose this if you want the T/A look with more comfort and tech.
• T/A 392: This is the step up for buyers who want a more serious performance setup.
• SRT 392: Pick this if you want a higher-performance Challenger with a stronger focus on speed and capability.
• SRT Hellcat: This is for buyers who want the most extreme straight-line performance in the lineup.
• SRT Hellcat Widebody: Choose this if you want Hellcat performance with a wider, more aggressive stance.
• SRT Demon: This is the most specialized performance choice in the lineup.
• GT: If you want the most balanced daily-driver setup, this is the trim to target first.

The safety package is not standard across the lineup, so check carefully for the driver-assistance features you want before you buy.

• Deal availability: 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,428 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.61% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 56.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $20,175, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Dodge Challenger's resale value?

The current average of $20,543 sits slightly below last year's $21,313.

That decline suggests the market has become a bit more buyer-friendly, which can help you if you’re shopping now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and trim desirability rather than just the badge alone. Well-kept examples with strong equipment and clean history should hold up better than rougher cars with unclear maintenance records.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Dodge Challenger safe?

The 2017 Dodge Challenger earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, but it also scores four stars in the frontal crash rating. It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.

The Challenger includes a reversing camera as standard, and available driver-assistance features include lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision alert. The expert safety writeup also notes that the car’s structure was rated Poor in the small front overlap test, which is a meaningful caveat if safety is a top priority. If you want the best protection, you should pay close attention to which optional safety features are actually fitted on the used example you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2017 Dodge Challenger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 27.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 56.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 3.61% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 adds AWD to the lineup, broadening the Challenger’s appeal for year-round use.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $23,724, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $20,543 average.
• It emphasizes authentic retro muscle-car character with a spacious cabin and strong everyday usability.

The bottom line: If you want the better value and a broader set of listings to choose from, the 2017 is the smarter starting point. If you’re shopping mainly for the Challenger’s classic personality and don’t mind paying more for a prior-year example, the 2016 can still make sense.

The Challenger also has the stronger used-price advantage here, but the Mustang brings a slightly lower starting MSRP and more listings.
