What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Dodge Challenger?

At 56.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or driven aggressively. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the car’s equipment and wear match its mileage and asking price. Because this model can attract enthusiastic owners, a clean, well-documented example is worth extra attention.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The GT adds all-wheel drive, while the standard rear-wheel-drive trims keep the classic muscle-car setup. The GT also brings a more approachable year-round personality, but the base setup is the one that preserves the traditional Challenger feel.
• Powertrain: The GT pairs the 3.6-liter V6 with an 8-speed automatic and 305 horsepower, while the AWD system can route up to 38 percent of engine power to the front when needed. It’s a good fit if you want a Challenger you can drive in more seasons.
• Safety package: The car includes a reversing camera as standard, while lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision alert are optional. Some driver-assist features are not standard, so check the exact equipment on any listing.
• Infotainment: The Uconnect 8.4 system comes standard on the GT with navigation, real-time traffic, weather alerts, and onboard apps. The tech setup is user-friendly and includes access to vehicle data through the central display.
• Fuel efficiency: The GT is rated at 18 mpg city and 27 mpg highway, and the test drive recorded around 22 mpg over 500 miles.

Which 2017 Dodge Challenger trim should I buy?

The 2017 Dodge Challenger is offered in 14 trim levels: SXT, GT, R/T, R/T Shaker, R/T Plus, R/T Plus Shaker, R/T Scat Pack, R/T Scat Pack Shaker, T/A, T/A 392, SRT 392, SRT Hellcat, SRT Hellcat Widebody, and SRT Demon.

Here's the short version:

• SXT: This is the entry point if you want the Challenger shape and personality at the lowest price, but you give up the richer equipment and stronger performance found higher up the range.
• GT: This is the best-value trim if you want the most usable all-around package, because it adds all-wheel drive and a well-equipped cabin while keeping the V6 setup.
• R/T: This is the step up if you want V8 power without jumping all the way into the more expensive performance trims.
• R/T Shaker: Choose this if you want the R/T formula with extra visual flair from the shaker hood.
• R/T Plus: This suits you if you want more comfort and convenience equipment than the standard R/T.
• R/T Plus Shaker: This combines the added equipment of the Plus trim with the shaker hood styling.
• R/T Scat Pack: This is for buyers who want a stronger performance focus and more muscle-car punch.
• R/T Scat Pack Shaker: Pick this if you want the Scat Pack’s performance with the shaker hood treatment.
• T/A: This trim leans into a more distinctive appearance and enthusiast-oriented character.
• T/A 392: This is the more serious performance-oriented T/A choice.
• SRT 392: This is the higher-performance option if you want a more aggressive setup and stronger capability.
• SRT Hellcat: This is the extreme-power choice for buyers who want the most dramatic straight-line performance.
• SRT Hellcat Widebody: Choose this if you want the Hellcat experience with a wider, more planted stance.
• SRT Demon: This is the most extreme performance trim in the lineup and the one for buyers chasing maximum straight-line drama.

The safety package note to keep in mind is that many driver-assist features are optional, so verify the exact equipment on any used example.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Dodge Challenger?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to compare examples and enough deal activity to reward patience.

• Deal availability: 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,444 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.30% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 56.4% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $20,175, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Dodge Challenger's resale value?

The current average of $20,472 sits slightly below last year's $21,619.

That decline suggests the market has softened, which can help you buy more affordably now but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy a clean, well-kept example at the right price so depreciation has less room to work against you. Strong condition and desirable equipment should matter more than chasing the cheapest listing.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.64/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Dodge Challenger safe?

The 2017 Dodge Challenger earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, though it scored four stars in the frontal crash rating. It received the highest Good rating in only the moderate front overlap and side crash tests, while the small front overlap test was rated Marginal and the roof strength and headrest/seat tests were rated Acceptable.

It earns a 4/10 safety score from our experts.

The standard reversing camera helps, but many driver-assistance features are optional, including lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and forward-collision alert. The lower IIHS results, especially the Marginal small-overlap result and Poor body-structure rating in that test, are the main caveats to keep in mind when you shop used examples.

Should I buy a 2017 Dodge Challenger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 56.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.30% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.64/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 adds all-wheel drive to the Challenger lineup, giving it a more usable year-round character.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $25,154, the 2016 costs more than the current year's $20,472 average.
• It remains one of the most authentic retro-inspired muscle cars, with fresh trim and wheel options plus the shaker hood.

The bottom line: If you want the better value and the added practicality of the 2017, that’s the smarter primary path. If you’re shopping mainly for classic Challenger character and are willing to pay more for a prior-year example, the 2016 still makes sense for a price-insensitive buyer.
