Is the 2017 Chevrolet Trax a good car?

Yes — you’re looking at a 4.6/5 user-rated small crossover with an expert rating of 6.3/10. The standout strength is Safety at 8/10.

Owners consistently praise its great gas mileage, compact size, and practical everyday usability, and they also like its features and how well it handles, especially on hills. That lines up with the Trax’s use case as a sensible, efficient compact crossover with a freshened design and standard smartphone integration. With 30.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to shop carefully.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Trax reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience centered on practicality, efficiency, and easy day-to-day use. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that the Trax is built to be easy to live with, with a simple, compact footprint and useful equipment that supports long-term usability. If you’re buying used, the main ownership risk is less about outright complexity and more about choosing a well-kept example that hasn’t been neglected.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Chevrolet Trax?

At 59.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with visible cosmetic wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the features you want are actually present on the trim you’re shopping. Because the Trax’s equipment varies a lot by trim, it’s worth confirming the exact feature set before you commit.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base LS trim comes with a 7-inch touchscreen, 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, power lumbar adjust, automatic headlights, a rear-view camera, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, but it loses the under-seat storage found on higher trims. The LT adds alloy wheels, projector headlights with LED running and tail lights, cruise control, remote start, heated mirrors, satellite radio, roof rails, upgraded cloth, and a 110-volt outlet. The Premier adds 18-inch alloys, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, full vinyl upholstery, and heated front seats, but it omits the sunroof unless you add it separately.
• Powertrain: Every Trax uses a turbocharged 1.4-liter 4-cylinder engine with 138 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed transmission. The engine can feel strained during highway passing or hill climbing, and the expert notes that the LT is the best balance of the three trims.
• Safety package: The Driver Confidence package adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, and parking sensors. The Driver Confidence II package adds forward-collision warning and lane-departure warning. The LS cannot be outfitted with these systems, and the LT can get everything except the forward-collision and lane-departure warning systems.
• Infotainment: Every trim gets Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus an extra standard USB port. The system uses a 7-inch touchscreen, and there’s no available navigation system beyond OnStar.
• Fuel efficiency: The Trax is rated at 25 mpg city and 33 mpg highway, with an expert note that real-world results can fall short of those figures in daily use.

Which 2017 Chevrolet Trax trim should I buy?

The 2017 Chevrolet Trax is offered in 3 trim levels: LS, LT, Premier.

Here's the short version:

• LS: This is the value entry point if you want the Trax’s core tech and connectivity at the lowest price. You still get the 7-inch touchscreen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and a rear-view camera, but you give up some of the nicer convenience and storage touches found higher up the range.
• LT: This is the best-value trim. It adds alloy wheels, projector headlights with LED running and tail lights, cruise control, remote start, heated mirrors, satellite radio, roof rails, upgraded cloth, and a 110-volt outlet, making it the most balanced choice for most used buyers.
• Premier: This is the most feature-rich trim, with 18-inch alloys, an auto-dimming rear-view mirror, full vinyl upholstery, and heated front seats. It suits you best if you want the top equipment set, but the ride can be less forgiving on the larger wheels.

The safety packages are trim-dependent: the LS cannot be equipped with them, the LT can get most of them, and the Premier can add the forward-collision and lane-departure warning package.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Chevrolet Trax?

This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right listing.

• Deal availability: 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,090 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.92% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 59.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $8,977, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Chevrolet Trax's resale value?

The current average of $8,985 sits slightly below last year's $9,975.

That decline suggests the Trax has become more affordable for used buyers, which can make it easier to move if you price yours competitively later. For a future seller, the current trend points to a market that rewards clean condition, strong equipment, and a fair asking price more than simple age alone. If you keep mileage reasonable and maintain the vehicle well, you’ll be better positioned to hold buyer interest.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Trax safe?

The 2017 Chevrolet Trax has been awarded top marks from both the government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Every Trax comes with front, front-seat side, front and rear side-curtain, and knee airbags for front-seat occupants. Available driver assistance includes blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, and forward-collision warning with lane-departure warning, but those features are not available on every trim. The LS has none of those systems, the LT can get most of them, and the Premier can add the forward-collision and lane-departure warning package.

Should I buy a 2017 Chevrolet Trax or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 30.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 59.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.92% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Chevrolet redesigned it inside and out for 2017, adding standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, an extra USB port, and newly available safety features.

The bottom line: If you want the updated Trax with better tech and a softer used price, the 2017 is the smart target. If you’re shopping strictly on value, you can also compare nearby years, but the 2017’s redesign and lower average price make it the more compelling pick for most buyers.
