Is the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD a good car?

Yes — it earns a 4.67/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Technology.

The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is aimed squarely at hard work, and that focus shows in its worksite-ready design and its all-new diesel engine with impressive power and torque. It is especially appealing if you need a truck built for demanding jobs rather than everyday commuting, and it adds practical features meant to make contractor life easier.

The market also shows healthy interest, with 29.2% of listings priced as good or great deals.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD reliable?

Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is described as a heavy-duty truck built for constant use on worksites, and its diesel powertrain is presented as a major strength for demanding ownership. The expert evaluation also highlights that the truck’s unique work-focused features are meant to make day-to-day jobsite use easier, which supports the case for durability in the kind of service this truck is designed to handle.

The diesel engine is described as surprisingly quiet and quick, with strong acceleration and serious towing ability, which suggests a powertrain that is built to do hard work without feeling strained. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the truck’s prior use and maintenance history match the heavy-duty life it was built for.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD?

At 68.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of the truck’s body, frame, and work-related wear. Because this model is aimed at heavy-duty use, condition matters as much as mileage, so pay close attention to signs of towing stress, jobsite abuse, and any evidence of inconsistent maintenance.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Work Truck is the most stripped-down version, while LT adds the larger MyLink touchscreen, 17-inch aluminum wheels, heated seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and Bluetooth connectivity. LTZ adds leather seating, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, and more chrome, while High Country brings a more upscale look with color-matched bumpers, a unique grille design, and 20-inch wheels.
• Powertrain: The standard engine is a 6.0-liter V8 with 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque, while the available 6.6-liter Duramax diesel makes 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. The diesel is the standout choice if you want the strongest towing-focused setup.
• Safety package: The truck includes a reversing camera with active guidelines, side-mirror cameras that help cover both blind spots, and trailering safety equipment such as trailer brake control and the ability to cycle through all the cameras while towing.
• Infotainment: The base setup uses a 4.2-inch color screen, while the larger MyLink touchscreen is 8 inches and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Navigation-equipped versions also add real-time traffic and weather forecasts.
• Fuel efficiency: In mixed driving, the diesel test truck returned 16.6 mpg.

Which 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD trim should I buy?

The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is offered in 4 trim levels: Work Truck, LT, LTZ, and High Country.

Here's the short version:

• Work Truck: This is the value-first choice if you want the lowest entry price and a no-frills heavy-duty truck. It gives you the gas V8, 4.2-inch color screen, 4 speakers, and a USB port, so it makes sense if you care more about capability than comfort.
• LT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the larger MyLink touchscreen, 17-inch aluminum wheels, heated seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and Bluetooth connectivity without jumping all the way to luxury pricing.
• LTZ: Choose this if you want a more upscale cabin, since it adds leather seating, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, and extra chrome details.
• High Country: This is the top-tier choice if you want the most distinctive appearance and the most premium presentation, with color-matched bumpers, a unique grille design, and 20-inch wheels.

The safety setup centers on the reversing camera, side-mirror cameras, and trailering aids, so those features are worth checking carefully on the specific truck you’re considering.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully but still enough price discipline to reward quick action on the right truck.

• Deal availability: 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,451 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.67% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 68.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $29,312, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD's resale value?

The current average of $30,673 sits slightly below last year's $31,513.

That decline suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a more favorable point if you plan to keep the truck for a while. For a future seller, the softer pricing means you may not see the same short-term appreciation you would in a tighter market, but heavy-duty trucks with the right equipment and condition can still hold demand well.

Because this model is built for work and includes desirable diesel and towing-focused equipment, well-kept examples should remain attractive to buyers who need capability. Trucks with cleaner histories and stronger equipment combinations are likely to be easier to resell than higher-wear examples.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD safe?

The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

It includes a reversing camera with active guidelines, side-mirror cameras that help cover both blind spots, and trailering safety equipment such as trailer brake control and the ability to cycle through all the cameras while towing. Those features are especially useful in a heavy-duty truck, where visibility and trailer control matter a lot.

The safety setup is practical and well suited to towing and jobsite use, but you should still verify which camera and trailering features are present on the specific truck you’re considering, since equipment can vary by trim and options.

Should I buy a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 29.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 68.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.67% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 model stands out for its all-new diesel engine with impressive power and torque, plus unique worksite-focused features that make it especially appealing for heavy-duty use.

The bottom line: If you want a heavy-duty truck that is purpose-built for work and you value the 2017’s diesel power and jobsite-friendly features, this is the year to target. If you are more price-sensitive, you can still shop carefully and focus on the best-maintained examples, especially those with cleaner histories and the equipment you actually need.
