Is the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD a good car?

Yes — it earns a 4.7/5 user rating and an 8/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Technology.

The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is aimed squarely at hard work, and that focus is what makes it distinctive. It is built for heavy-duty use on worksites, and it pairs that purpose with an all-new diesel engine that brings impressive power and torque. For buyers who need a truck meant to handle demanding jobs rather than just everyday commuting, that combination is the Silverado 2500HD’s main appeal.

The truck also includes unique features intended to make life easier for contractors and other people working on job sites, so its appeal goes beyond raw capability. 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still some attractive opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD reliable?

Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is described as a truck built for demanding work, and that kind of mission usually rewards durability and straightforward operation. Its heavy-duty focus, simple controls, and worksite-friendly features point to a truck designed to handle repeated use rather than delicate treatment.

The diesel powertrain is presented as a major strength, with impressive power and torque, and the truck’s practical equipment is aimed at making tough jobs easier. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that hard-working trucks can accumulate wear quickly, so condition and maintenance history matter a lot.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD?

At 68.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough inspection of the truck’s body, frame, and work-related wear. Because this model is aimed at heavy-duty use, you’ll want to focus on signs of hard towing, jobsite abuse, and any repairs that could affect long-term durability.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Work Truck trim is the most stripped-down version, while LT adds the larger MyLink touchscreen, 17-inch aluminum wheels, heated seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and Bluetooth connectivity. LTZ adds leather seating, dual-zone automatic climate control, and remote start, while High Country brings a more upscale appearance with color-matched bumpers, a unique grille design, and 20-inch wheels.
• Powertrain: The standard engine is a 6.0-liter V8 with 360 horsepower and 380 pound-feet of torque, while the available 6.6-liter Duramax diesel V8 makes 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque. Power goes through a 6-speed Allison automatic transmission, and the diesel is described as surprisingly quiet with strong acceleration.
• Safety package: The truck includes a reversing camera with active guidelines, side-mirror cameras that help cover both sides, and trailering safety equipment such as trailer brake control and the ability to cycle through all the cameras while towing.
• Infotainment: The base setup uses a 4.2-inch color screen, while the larger 8-inch MyLink touchscreen adds an easier-to-use layout. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available, and the system can also support navigation, real-time traffic, and weather forecasts.
• Fuel efficiency: In mixed driving, the truck returned 16.6 mpg.

Which 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD trim should I buy?

The 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is offered in 4 trim levels: Work Truck, LT, LTZ, High Country.

Here's the short version:

• Work Truck: This is the least expensive path into the Silverado 2500HD, and it gives you the gas V8, 4.2-inch color screen, 4 speakers, and a USB port. It makes sense if you want the core heavy-duty capability and plan to keep the truck focused on work.
• LT: This is the best-value trim because it adds the larger MyLink touchscreen, 17-inch aluminum wheels, heated seats, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and Bluetooth connectivity. If you want the most useful mix of comfort and equipment without jumping too far up the price ladder, this is the trim to target.
• LTZ: This trim adds leather seating, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote start, and more chrome on the mirror caps and door handles. It suits you if you want a more upscale cabin and extra convenience features.
• High Country: This is the top-tier trim, with color-matched bumpers, a unique grille design, and 20-inch wheels. It’s the right pick if you want the most premium appearance and equipment in the lineup.

The safety package centers on the reversing camera, side-mirror cameras, and trailering aids, which are especially useful on higher-trim trucks as well.

The current average of $30,252 sits slightly below last year's $31,025.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The reversing camera is large, vivid, and has active guidelines that turn with the wheel. The most helpful safety feature is the pair of cameras built into the side mirrors, which can display the image on the center screen when you signal. That system is especially useful for blind-spot checks and tight maneuvering, and the truck also includes trailering safety equipment such as trailer brake control and the ability to cycle through all the cameras while towing.

Should I buy a 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 28.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 68.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.49% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 model stands out for its all-new diesel engine with impressive power and torque, plus worksite-friendly features that make it especially appealing for heavy-duty use.

The bottom line: The 2017 Silverado 2500HD makes the most sense if you want a work-focused heavy-duty truck with strong diesel power, useful jobsite features, and a market that has softened enough to create some buying opportunities. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep shopping the broader market and compare condition closely, but this year is a solid target when you find a clean, well-priced example.
