How much does the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu cost?

Prices have softened 5.91% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,842 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of cars to compare.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu a good car?

Generally — the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu earns a 4.3/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.

Owners repeatedly praise its comfort, features, and good gas mileage, and they also highlight the smooth driving experience and modern tech like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In practical terms, that makes it a strong fit if you want a conventional midsize sedan that feels modern and easy to live with rather than merely basic. The market also shows 29.0% of listings as good or great deals, which supports the case for shopping carefully.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a car that many owners find comfortable, feature-rich, and good on gas, with several describing it as smooth and easy to live with over time. The expert drive notes also emphasize refinement in the Malibu’s drivetrain and chassis, which supports the impression that it’s built to be dependable in everyday use. Chevrolet’s maintenance and ownership pitch is helped by the car’s strong value proposition, and the Malibu’s broad feature set suggests it can be a sensible long-term choice if you keep up with routine care.

For used buyers, the main ownership risk is less about the car’s basic competence and more about finding one that has been maintained well and not abused.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Chevrolet Malibu?

At 52.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should run a vehicle history report before you get too far into the process, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if the car has any accident or repair history. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the car’s features and electronics work as expected, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on comfort and technology.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Malibu L starts with a lower price point, while the LS, LT, Hybrid, and Premier add equipment and polish; the Premier stands out for its upscale presentation and stronger powertrain, but the base trim is the one most likely to leave you wanting more.
• Powertrain: The standard setup is a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic, while the Premier gets a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with a 9-speed automatic and much stronger output; the Hybrid is tuned for efficiency and is rated at 46 mpg in combined driving.
• Safety package: The Driver Confidence package adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with lane-change alert and rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high-beam headlights. Driver Confidence II adds adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic emergency braking, and parking assist. Some of these features are bundled by trim, so check carefully before you buy.
• Infotainment: Chevrolet MyLink adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus OnStar subscription services and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot connection. The system is a major part of the car’s appeal, so make sure the screen, phone integration, and connected services all work properly.
• Fuel efficiency: The Hybrid is rated at 46 mpg in combined driving, and the Premier is rated at 26 mpg combined.

Which 2017 Chevrolet Malibu trim should I buy?

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LS, LT, Hybrid, and Premier.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the entry point, so it makes sense only if you want the lowest purchase price and can live without the richer feature content that helps define the Malibu’s appeal.
• LS: This is the first step up and a better starting point for most shoppers because it should give you a more balanced ownership experience without pushing you into the highest-priced versions.
• LT: This is the trim to focus on if you want the best mix of value and equipment, since it sits in the middle of the lineup and should deliver much of the Malibu’s comfort and tech appeal without the Premier’s premium pricing.
• Hybrid: Choose this if fuel economy is your top priority and you’re willing to trade some practicality for efficiency.
• Premier: This is the most upscale and powerful choice, with the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and the richest feature content; it’s the right pick if you want the Malibu at its most polished.

The safety-package trims are worth checking closely, because several of the Malibu’s best driver-assistance features are bundled rather than standard.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Chevrolet Malibu?

This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively and still find worthwhile opportunities.

• Deal availability: 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,842 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.91% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 52.1% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $10,751, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?

The current average of $10,757 sits slightly below last year's $11,433.

That softer pricing suggests the Malibu has moved into a more buyer-friendly phase, which can be good news if you’re shopping now but less ideal if you plan to sell soon. A lower current market average can mean your future resale value may not rise quickly unless the car is especially clean, well equipped, and well maintained. If you buy carefully and keep the car in strong condition, you can help protect value against further market softness.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu safe?

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu earns Top Safety Pick Plus recognition from the IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA, except for four-star ratings for the front passenger in a frontal impact and for rollover resistance.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Chevrolet gives the Malibu a full suite of driver-assistance features through the Driver Confidence and Driver Confidence II packages. Those packages add forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with lane-change alert and rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic emergency braking, and parking assist. Rear Seat Reminder is also designed to help prevent you from leaving a child or pet in the car.

One caveat is the IIHS headlight result, which keeps the Malibu from reaching an even higher safety distinction.

Should I buy a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 29.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 5.91% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 Malibu pairs a strong redesign foundation with modern tech and a well-rounded driving experience.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $9,737, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,757 average.
• It was redesigned to bring the Malibu more in line with the competition.

The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded Malibu with stronger tech, safety, and overall polish, the 2017 is the better target. If your budget is tighter, the 2016 can still make sense because it delivers much of the redesign’s core appeal for less money.
