CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Chevrolet Malibu
overall

Summary
With 1,860 currently listed for sale and an average price of $10,700, 27.0% of 2017 Chevrolet Malibu listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu 4.3 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.33 / 10.
51.5% of 2017 Chevrolet Malibu listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu stands out as a midsize sedan that Chevrolet has refined into a well-rounded family car at a time when many buyers were moving toward crossovers. It is presented as a car that deserves more respect than it often gets, largely because its most recent redesign for the 2016 model year gave it a stronger foundation. That makes the 2017 Malibu appealing to shoppers who want a conventional sedan that feels modern and thoughtfully executed rather than merely practical.
What helps the 2017 Malibu connect with buyers is the combination of comfort, features, and good gas mileage that owners commonly praise. Reviewers also point to its smooth driving experience and modern tech options such as Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. At the same time, some owners mention that it can be noisy and a little slow on initial acceleration, and a few feel the price should be lower.

The car has all the features Im looking for, from great gas mileage to Apple CarPlay. Thee car is a great value for the money. The only feature this car is missing is an inverter, but those are only important on long road trips. I was also looking at the Hyundai Elantra, and this car is a close competition.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu a good car?
Generally — the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu earns a 4.3/5 user rating and an 8.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.
Owners repeatedly praise its comfort, features, and good gas mileage, and they also call out the smooth driving experience and modern tech like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In practical terms, that makes it a strong fit if you want a conventional midsize sedan that feels modern, easy to live with, and well equipped for daily use. The market also shows 27.2% of listings as good or great deals, which supports the case for shopping carefully.
Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu reliable?
Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a car that many people find dependable enough to recommend for everyday use, with comfort and good gas mileage showing up again and again in reviews. The expert drive notes also describe the Malibu as a well-executed, refined family sedan, which reinforces the sense that it is built to be a trouble-free daily driver. Chevrolet’s maintenance coverage language is not included here, so your best protection is to focus on service records and overall condition.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the basic formula and more about finding a car that has been cared for consistently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Chevrolet Malibu?
At 51.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had bodywork or shows uneven panel gaps, tire wear, or paint mismatch. Because this model year has a sizable share of accident history in the market, condition matters more than usual when you compare listings. Focus on how the car drives, how the electronics work, and whether the cabin shows signs of heavy wear.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Malibu L starts the lineup, while the LS, LT, Hybrid, and Premier add equipment as you move up. The Premier stands out with the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, while the base car is the one most likely to leave you wanting more equipment and power.
- Powertrain: You get a standard turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic, plus a Hybrid and a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder exclusive to Premier. The 2.0-liter setup is the strongest performer, while the Hybrid is the efficiency play.
- Safety package: Driver Confidence adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with lane-change alert and rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high-beam headlights. Driver Confidence II adds adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic emergency braking, and parking assist. These packages are bundled on Premier, so lower trims may not have the same coverage.
- Infotainment: Chevrolet MyLink adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with OnStar subscription services and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. The system is a major reason this car feels current.
- Fuel efficiency: The Hybrid is rated at 46 mpg in combined driving, and the Premier is rated at 26 mpg combined.
Which 2017 Chevrolet Malibu trim should I buy?
The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu is offered in 5 trim levels: Malibu L, LS, LT, Hybrid, and Premier.
Here's the short version:
- Malibu L: This is the entry point, so it makes sense only if you want the lowest starting price and can live with the fewest features.
- LS: This is the first step up and a better fit if you want a more balanced everyday Malibu without jumping too far in price.
- LT: This is the trim most shoppers should focus on first because it sits in the middle of the lineup and should give you the best mix of value and equipment.
- Hybrid: Choose this if fuel economy is your top priority and you want the efficiency-focused version of the Malibu.
- Premier: This is the most desirable choice if you want the strongest engine, the richest feature set, and the most upscale feel.
The safety-package note to keep in mind is that Driver Confidence and Driver Confidence II are bundled on Premier, so that trim is the easiest way to get the fullest driver-assistance setup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Chevrolet Malibu?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,841 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.25% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 51.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $10,681, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?
The current average of $10,681 sits slightly below last year's $11,393.
That price movement suggests the Malibu has softened enough to create a more buyer-friendly entry point today, but it also means future sellers may need to stay realistic on asking price. If you buy well now, you reduce the risk of overpaying into a market that has already moved down. Condition and trim will matter a lot when you eventually resell, because shoppers in this segment tend to compare value closely.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu safe?
The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu earns a Top Safety Pick Plus rating from IIHS and five-star ratings across the board from NHTSA, except for four-star ratings for the front passenger in a frontal impact and for rollover resistance.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Chevrolet includes Rear Seat Reminder to help prevent you from leaving children or pets in the car, and the Malibu also offers a full slate of driver-assistance features through the Driver Confidence and Driver Confidence II packages. Those packages add forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, lane-change alert, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and parking assist. The main caveat is the IIHS headlight result, which keeps it from an even stronger safety distinction.
Should I buy a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 51.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.25% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- The 2017 stands out for its modern tech, strong driving dynamics, and well-rounded family-sedan character.
Consider the 2016 if:
- At $9,707, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,681 average.
- The 2016 is a freshly redesigned Malibu with more efficiency, more tech, and more safety than the older car it replaced.
The bottom line: If you want the better-rounded Malibu with stronger tech and a more polished overall package, the 2017 is the safer default choice. If your main goal is to spend less and you still want the benefits of the redesign, the 2016 is the value-oriented alternative worth cross-shopping.
