How much does the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu cost?

Prices have softened 6.41% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 1,831 listings available, which suggests you should have a workable range of choices.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu a good car?

Generally — the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu earns 4.3/5 from owners and 8.3/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Technology at 10/10.

Owners repeatedly praise its comfort, features, good gas mileage, smooth driving experience, and modern tech like Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. In use, that lines up with the Malibu’s role as a refined midsize sedan for shoppers who want a conventional family car that feels modern and thoughtfully executed. The market also shows 25.7% good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a car that many people find comfortable, dependable in daily use, and easy to live with over time. The expert drive notes also emphasize a refined, well-sorted driving experience, which supports the sense that the Malibu is built to be a trouble-free long-term companion when maintained properly. If you’re buying used, the main ownership risk is less about the model’s basic competence and more about finding one that has been cared for consistently.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Chevrolet Malibu?

At 51.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has any signs of prior bodywork or uneven wear. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the car’s features and electronics work as intended. If a listing looks unusually cheap, make sure the savings aren’t hiding repair history or cosmetic shortcuts.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Malibu L starts lower than the LS, LT, Hybrid, and Premier, and the higher trims add more upscale equipment and a more premium feel.
• Powertrain: The Malibu offers a turbocharged 1.5-liter 4-cylinder with a 6-speed automatic, plus a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder in Premier trim with a 9-speed automatic; the Hybrid is also part of the lineup and is rated for 46 mpg in combined driving.
• Safety package: Driver Confidence adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with lane-change alert and rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high-beam headlights. Driver Confidence II adds adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic emergency braking, and parking assist. These packages are bundled on Premier rather than standard across the lineup.
• Infotainment: Chevrolet MyLink adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with OnStar subscription services and a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot connection.
• Fuel efficiency: The Hybrid is rated at 46 mpg in combined driving, and the Premier test car averaged 27.3 mpg on a test loop.

Which 2017 Chevrolet Malibu trim should I buy?

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LS, LT, Hybrid, and Premier.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the entry point, so it makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Malibu lineup and can live without the richer equipment found higher up.
• LS: This is the first step up from the base car and is the trim to consider if you want a better balance of price and everyday usability.
• LT: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it sits in the middle of the lineup and should give you a more satisfying mix of features without jumping all the way to Premier pricing.
• Hybrid: Choose this if fuel economy is your top priority and you want the Malibu’s efficiency-focused setup.
• Premier: This is the one to buy if you want the strongest performance, the most upscale feel, and access to the most advanced driver-assistance content.

Driver Confidence and Driver Confidence II are bundled with Premier rather than spread across the lineup, so shoppers who want the fullest safety feature set should focus there.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Chevrolet Malibu?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,831 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.41% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 51.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $10,652, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu's resale value?

The current average of $10,652 sits slightly below last year's $11,381.

That decline suggests the Malibu has softened in the used market, which can be good news if you’re buying now but less favorable if you’re planning to sell soon. A lower current price can also mean future resale gains may be more modest unless the car is especially clean, well-equipped, and well maintained. Strong condition and desirable features matter more when the market is already trending down.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu safe?

The 2017 Chevrolet Malibu earns a Top Safety Pick Plus rating from the IIHS and five-star ratings across the board from NHTSA, except for four-star ratings for the front passenger in a frontal impact and for rollover resistance.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

The Malibu’s safety tech is anchored by Driver Confidence and Driver Confidence II on Premier, which add forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning with lane-change alert and rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, front and rear parking sensors, automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, full-speed-range automatic emergency braking, and parking assist. Rear Seat Reminder is also included to help prevent children or pets from being left behind. The main caveat is that the headlights are rated Poor by the IIHS, which keeps it from being an even cleaner safety story.

Should I buy a 2017 Chevrolet Malibu or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 25.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 51.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.41% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2017 stands out for its refined driving feel, strong tech, and well-rounded family-car execution.

Consider the 2016 if:

• At $9,687, the 2016 costs less than the current year's $10,652 average.
• The redesign made the Malibu more modern, spacious, and better equipped.

The bottom line: If you want the better-balanced choice, the 2017 is the stronger pick because it combines a lower average price, solid owner satisfaction, and a well-rounded feature set. If your priority is simply spending less up front, the 2016 is the more budget-friendly path and still gives you the redesigned Malibu formula.

How does the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu compare to the 2017 Toyota Camry?

Our experts score the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu 8.3/10 and the 2017 Toyota Camry 7.5/10. The Malibu is the better value here, with a much lower average used price and stronger expert scoring. The Camry has more listings and a higher share of good and great deals, but the Malibu counters with better fuel economy in city and highway driving and a stronger accident-free share in the market data.
