CarGurus Analysis: 2017 BMW X5
Summary
With 195 currently listed for sale and an average price of $13,639, 23.6% of 2017 BMW X5 listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.

Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW X5 stands out as a luxury SUV that still puts driving feel at the center of the experience. BMW built it on a rear-wheel-drive platform and offered inline-six or V8 engines, with xDrive all-wheel drive available. It is also described as a midsize, two-row, five-passenger SUV with roomy seating, outstanding visibility, and generous cargo space, which helps explain why it appeals to buyers who want both practicality and a more engaging road feel than many rivals deliver.
For this model year, the X5’s strengths are balanced by a few ownership cautions. BMW’s split tailgate design can make it harder to reach items that have slid forward to the base of the back seat, and the model’s reliability record is described as unimpressive overall. The broader guidance also notes that V8-engined X5s are not fuel-efficient, which can raise running costs. Even so, the 2017 X5 remains attractive for shoppers who want a roomy, comfortable, and rewarding-to-drive luxury SUV with a strong reputation for versatility.

How much does the 2017 BMW X5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,250 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,231 |
| Year-Round High | $16,894 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,898 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −9.75% |
Prices have softened 9.75% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,339 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 BMW X5 a good car?
Yes — the 2017 BMW X5 earns a 4.5/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its powerful engine, luxurious interior, smooth handling, comfortable ride, and practical everyday usefulness. For you, that means this model year fits especially well if you want a luxury SUV that feels engaging to drive without giving up cabin space or cargo versatility. With 35.9% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.
Is the 2017 BMW X5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback also highlights a dependable-feeling driving experience, with praise for its smooth handling and comfortable ride. At the same time, some owners mention maintenance issues and equipment concerns, so long-term ownership risk is best managed by choosing a well-maintained example with a clear service history.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW X5?
At 62.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on maintenance records, body condition, and signs of uneven wear or repair work. If you are comparing multiple listings, focus on the ones that combine strong condition, clean history, and documented upkeep rather than chasing the lowest sticker price alone.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW X5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,339 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.75% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 62.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,231, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 BMW X5's resale value?
The current average of $15,250 sits slightly below last year's $16,898.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. If you plan to resell later, the softer current pricing means your future value will depend heavily on how well you preserve condition and maintenance records. Strong presentation, clean history, and documented upkeep matter more when the market is already pricing in depreciation.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW X5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 62.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.75% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 is a strong choice if you want a well-liked luxury SUV with a softer used-market price and you are willing to shop carefully for condition and history. If you are especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may also be worth comparing, but the 2017 stands out as a balanced pick when you want a mix of value, owner satisfaction, and broad inventory.
