Is the 2017 BMW X5 a good car?

Generally — the 2017 BMW X5 earns a 4.47/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners consistently praise its outstanding performance, luxurious interior, and practicality, and many also highlight its powerful engine, smooth handling, and comfortable ride. Is the 2017 BMW X5 reliable?

The owner feedback also points to dependable day-to-day appeal, with praise for the X5’s comfort, performance, and overall usability. At the same time, some owners mention maintenance issues and equipment concerns, so a well-kept example matters more than a bargain that looks good on paper. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is ending up with a neglected luxury SUV that can become expensive to sort out.

What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW X5?

At 62% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on signs of uneven wear, incomplete repairs, and any evidence that maintenance has been deferred. Because this is a luxury SUV, you should pay close attention to overall condition, service records, and how well the cabin and electronics have held up.

If you find a listing below $15,245, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2017 BMW X5's resale value?

The current average of $15,359 sits slightly below last year's $17,125.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the X5 more approachable for you as a buyer today. For a future seller, it means resale value may be steadier if you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition. A clean history and good maintenance records should matter more when it comes time to resell, especially in a luxury SUV segment where buyers are selective.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.47/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2017 BMW X5 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2017 if:

• 38.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 62% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 10.32% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.47/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.

The bottom line: The 2017 BMW X5 is a strong choice if you want a well-equipped luxury SUV with appealing owner satisfaction and a softer price than a year ago. If you’re more price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby model years and focus on the cleanest, best-documented example rather than chasing the lowest sticker price.
