CarGurus Analysis: 2017 BMW 5 Series
overall

Summary
With 186 currently listed for sale near Chicago, IL and an average price of $17,749.00, 28.0% of 2017 BMW 5 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 BMW 5 Series 4 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
66.1% of 2017 BMW 5 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW 5 Series stands out as a thoroughly renewed take on BMW’s midsize luxury sedan. It arrives with a fresh chassis, new engines, an updated iDrive interface, and a range of innovative technologies, all aimed at helping BMW push back toward the top of the segment. Even though BMW’s styling changes are often subtle, this model is described as all new, which gives it a more substantial redesign than its appearance might first suggest.
One of its key strengths is the way it uses high-strength lightweight materials to grow in size without gaining weight. The new engines are also a major part of its appeal, increasing power without increasing consumption. The car is presented as moving back toward being a driver’s car again, which should matter to buyers who want a luxury sedan that feels more engaging behind the wheel. At the same time, it no longer offers a manual transmission, which may disappoint shoppers looking for the most hands-on driving experience.

This turned out to be a base model with almost zero extra features other than a sunshade and all wheel drive with the upgraded engine. However i was anticipating a luxury sedan and got a luxury performance sedan. I was greatly surprised with the acceleration coupled with the ride quality and numerous technology features. I am going from a 2011 Cadillac cts coupe performance trim and the bmw is comparable in ride quality, but head and shoulders above it in acceleration and braking ability.

Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series a good car?
Generally — the 4/5 user rating and 7.83/10 expert rating point to a strong overall showing for this model year. The model scores 9/10 across Technology and Safety.
The 2017 5 Series is presented as a thoroughly renewed midsize luxury sedan with a fresh chassis, new engines, updated iDrive, and a more engaging driving character. It also uses high-strength lightweight materials to grow in size without gaining weight, which supports its balance of comfort and athleticism.
The market shows 34.7% good or great deals, so you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2017 5 Series is described as a well-built, balanced sedan with a sorted suspension, comfortable interior, and an intelligent automatic transmission. Its new engines are also framed as strong performers that increase power without increasing consumption, which is a good sign for everyday durability-minded shoppers.
The performance notes also point to a smooth, well-isolated cabin and a transmission that is up to the task, while the cost-effectiveness commentary suggests the car’s value depends heavily on how many options you add. For used buyers, the biggest long-term ownership risk is that a heavily optioned example can be expensive to maintain and repair.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW 5 Series?
At 60.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars with higher mileage or extensive option content. Focus on condition, evidence of prior bodywork, and whether the car’s technology and driver-assistance features still function properly.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 530i offers an updated turbo 2.0-liter engine, but the source notes that it can feel expensive for a 4-cylinder luxury sedan. The 540i moves to a turbo inline six, and the M550i adds a twin-turbo V8, so the main trim differences are power and price.
- Powertrain: The 530i’s turbo four makes 248 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, while the 540i’s turbo six makes 335 hp and 332 lb-ft. The M550i’s twin-turbo V8 makes 462 hp and 479 lb-ft. The 530i is quick enough for daily use, but passing at highway speeds can require a downshift.
- Safety package: The car offers blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep warning and intervention with side-collision avoidance, radar-controlled adaptive cruise, collision warning and intervention, pedestrian detection, traffic jam assistant, and automatic parking. The source also notes that getting everything needed for that level of autonomy adds cost, so feature content can vary by build.
- Infotainment: The sixth-generation iDrive system is a major upgrade, and the car can be fitted with gesture control. Apple CarPlay is available, but Android Auto is not.
- Fuel efficiency: The 530i is rated at 24 mpg city and 34 mpg highway for a combined 27 mpg. The source also notes that real-world mileage can vary depending on drive mode and how much you use start/stop.
Which 2017 BMW 5 Series trim should I buy?
The 2017 BMW 5 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 530i, 540i, M550i.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The 530i gives you the updated turbo four and the core chassis improvements, but the source makes clear that it can feel pricey once you start adding options. It is the least powerful choice, and many of the advanced convenience and safety features are not necessarily included.
- Sweet-spot trim: The 540i is the best all-around pick if you want stronger performance without jumping to V8 pricing. Its turbo inline six adds a meaningful power bump over the 530i and keeps the car in the sweet spot for everyday luxury-sedan use.
- Premium/top trim: The M550i is the performance flagship, with a twin-turbo V8 and the strongest straight-line pace in the lineup. It makes sense if you want maximum power and are comfortable with the higher purchase price.
The safety package is broad, but the source notes that getting the full autonomous-style feature set can add about $5,000, so check each car’s equipment carefully.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW 5 Series?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile examples.
- Deal availability: 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,183 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.47% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 60.6% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,745.60, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 BMW 5 Series's resale value?
The current average of $16,955 sits slightly below last year's $18,128.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point. For a future seller, the current softness means resale upside may depend more on condition, mileage, and equipment than on broad market momentum.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2017 BMW 5 Series safe?
The 2017 5 Series earns a five-star rating from NHTSA and a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS, receiving its top score of Good in all tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The car offers blind-spot monitoring and lane-keep warning and intervention with side-collision avoidance, radar-controlled adaptive cruise, collision warning and intervention, pedestrian detection, traffic jam assistant, and automatic parking. The source also highlights that the full suite of autonomous-style features is available if you pay for it, so safety equipment can vary by trim and options.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW 5 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 60.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.47% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It’s an all-new redesign with a fresh chassis, new engines, updated iDrive, and a more engaging driving feel.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $18,515, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $16,955 average.
- It adds the 530e plug-in hybrid, giving you a more frugal option in the lineup.
The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2017 is the stronger buy because prices have softened and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to pay more for the added plug-in hybrid option, the 2018 is the better path for efficiency-focused shopping.
