CarGurus Analysis: 2017 BMW 4 Series

Summary
With 151 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $16,732, 16.6% of 2017 BMW 4 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 BMW 4 Series 4.08 / 5 stars.
75.5% of 2017 BMW 4 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW 4 Series stands out for blending coupe-like style with the practicality of a broader body-style lineup. In its first generation, it was introduced as BMW’s sleeker successor to the two-door 3 Series models, and it sits lower and looks more streamlined than the sedan-based cars it shares much of its hardware with. BMW also gave it a distinct identity through details such as the arrow-shaped air vent behind the front wheels, and the lineup expanded beyond the coupe and convertible with the addition of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, a five-door hatchback version of the coupe.
For 2017, the first-generation car also benefited from an update that brought cosmetic and tech upgrades, including LED headlights for all models and stiffer suspension for a sharper drive. It was already well equipped, with standard features such as 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, automatic climate control, power front seats and BMW’s iDrive operating system. Buyers also had a choice of trims including standard, Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport, which helped the car feel upscale even in base form.
What makes the 2017 BMW 4 Series appealing is the combination of strong performance, good equipment and a premium feel. The available turbocharged engines and the car’s generally quick character support its sporty image, while the convertible’s folding metal roof adds refinement and security. The main trade-offs are that BMW repairs can be costly if something goes wrong, and the convertible’s roof takes up some boot space when folded.

The car is in worse conditions than shown in these photos. The engine bay is dirty and the brakes of rust on them. The car was also driven twice the national average in one year (29k miles) and is $3,000 overpriced. The salesperson was super nice and helpful but the car was just in bad conditions.

The only blemish so far is it lacks remote start, other than that I love this car. I have the 440i and am impressed with the power, comfort and drivability, a solid 4.95. I’ve had it 3 days and am still in the can’t wait to drive it again stage. Great job BMW.

This BMW 4 series car is absolutely stunning. Beautiful colors both inside and out and very well equipped. And the price sure seems fair when considering modern day pricing structures. I really came close to buying this car but my BMW X3 just suits my needs better.

|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,208 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,889 |
| Year-Round High | $16,962 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,939 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.32% |

There are 886 listings available, which suggests you have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 BMW 4 Series a good car?
Generally — the 4.08/5 user rating points to a well-liked used car overall. Drivers most often praise its performance and handling, along with its power and quality, and many also like its stylish design and value for the money. For you, that makes it a strong fit if you want a premium-feeling car with a sporty character and a broader body-style lineup. With 31.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 BMW 4 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.08/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback also points to a car that many owners find dependable enough to enjoy over time, with praise centered on its quality and overall driving experience. At the same time, some owners mention reliability concerns and minor issues, so you should treat maintenance history and condition as important parts of the decision. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is manageable if you choose carefully, but it is not a car to buy casually without checking its records.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW 4 Series?
At 55.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or incomplete service records. Focus your condition check on signs of past repairs, uneven panel gaps, and anything that suggests the car may not have been maintained consistently.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 BMW 4 Series?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you are patient and compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 886 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.32% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 55.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,889, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 BMW 4 Series's resale value?
The current average of $16,208 sits slightly below last year's $16,939.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some of its near-term depreciation, which can help a future seller if the market stays steady. A lower entry price today can also make the car easier to move later, especially if you buy a clean example with strong maintenance records. Because demand tends to hold up better for cars that owners rate highly, condition and documentation will matter a lot when you eventually resell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.08/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW 4 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 55.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.32% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.08/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: The 2017 is the better choice if you want the updated version with a softer market price and you are willing to shop carefully for a clean, well-kept example. If you are especially price-sensitive, a nearby year may be worth considering, but the 2017 gives you a strong mix of value, owner satisfaction, and current deal availability.
