CarGurus Analysis: 2017 BMW 4 Series

Summary
With 918 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,138, 32.1% of 2017 BMW 4 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 BMW 4 Series 4.08 / 5 stars.
52.0% of 2017 BMW 4 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 BMW 4 Series stands out for blending coupe-like style with the practicality of a broader body-style lineup. In its first generation, it was introduced as BMW’s sleeker successor to the two-door 3 Series models, and it sits lower and looks more streamlined than the sedan-based cars it shares much of its hardware with. BMW also gave it a distinct identity through details such as the arrow-shaped air vent behind the front wheels, and the lineup expanded beyond the coupe and convertible with the addition of the 4 Series Gran Coupe, a five-door hatchback version of the coupe.
For 2017, the first-generation car also benefited from an update that brought cosmetic and tech upgrades, including LED headlights for all models and stiffer suspension for a sharper drive. It was already well equipped, with standard features such as 17-inch alloy wheels, xenon headlights, automatic climate control, power front seats and BMW’s iDrive operating system. Buyers also had a choice of trims including standard, Sport Line, Luxury Line and M Sport, which helped the car feel upscale even in base form.
What makes the 2017 BMW 4 Series appealing is the combination of strong performance, good equipment and a premium feel. The available turbocharged engines and the car’s generally quick character support its sporty image, while the convertible’s folding metal roof adds refinement and security. The main trade-offs are that BMW repairs can be costly if something goes wrong, and the convertible’s roof takes up some boot space when folded.

The car is in worse conditions than shown in these photos. The engine bay is dirty and the brakes of rust on them. The car was also driven twice the national average in one year (29k miles) and is $3,000 overpriced. The salesperson was super nice and helpful but the car was just in bad conditions.

The only blemish so far is it lacks remote start, other than that I love this car. I have the 440i and am impressed with the power, comfort and drivability, a solid 4.95. I’ve had it 3 days and am still in the can’t wait to drive it again stage. Great job BMW.

This BMW 4 series car is absolutely stunning. Beautiful colors both inside and out and very well equipped. And the price sure seems fair when considering modern day pricing structures. I really came close to buying this car but my BMW X3 just suits my needs better.

| Year-Round High | $16,956.27 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,837 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −4.14% |

If you find a listing below $15,889.30, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 BMW 4 Series a good car?
Generally — the 4.08/5 user rating points to a car that many shoppers find rewarding to own. Drivers consistently praise the performance and handling, and they also like the power and quality. Stylish design is another recurring strength, which fits a model that was built to feel more distinctive than the 3 Series and to deliver a premium, driver-focused experience. For you, that means the 2017 BMW 4 Series makes the most sense if you want a sporty luxury coupe, convertible, or Gran Coupe with strong everyday polish. 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 BMW 4 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 4.08/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The user feedback also points to reliability as a mixed but important consideration, with some owners mentioning reliability concerns and minor issues. At the same time, the broader ownership experience suggests many drivers still find the car dependable enough to enjoy its performance and quality over time. For used buyers, that means long-term ownership risk is manageable if you choose carefully, but you should expect premium-car maintenance discipline.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 BMW 4 Series?
At 50.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can separate clean examples from cars with prior damage. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially on cars that look unusually cheap or have incomplete service records. Focus your evaluation on overall condition, signs of past repairs, and whether the car’s equipment and interior wear match the mileage and asking price.

What is the 2017 BMW 4 Series's resale value?
The current average of $16,140 sits slightly below last year's $16,837.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a little more favorable for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to stay competitive on price. If you buy well now and keep the car in strong condition, you may be better positioned when it comes time to resell. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.08/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 BMW 4 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 50.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 4.14% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.08/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest balance of current pricing, buyer interest, and owner satisfaction, the 2017 is a sensible primary target. If you are especially price-sensitive, you may want to compare nearby years and focus on the cleanest, best-documented example rather than chasing the lowest sticker price alone.
