CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Audi Q5

Summary
With 272 currently listed for sale near New York, NY and an average price of $12,355, 19.5% of 2017 Audi Q5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Audi Q5 4.6 / 5 stars.
76.8% of 2017 Q5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Audi Q5 stands out as a luxury SUV that blends refinement, practicality, and a strong standard equipment list. Audi’s buying guide describes the Q5 as a midsize SUV with standard quattro all-wheel drive, and says its appeal is centered on its luxurious interior, upmarket image, and practicality rather than off-road ability. For this generation, the Q5 was already well equipped, with standard features including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, Bluetooth, cruise control, three-zone climate control, a rear-view camera, steering wheel-mounted shift paddles, leather upholstery, power front seats and tailgate, and sliding rear seats.
What makes the 2017 model especially distinctive is the breadth of its powertrain and trim offerings by the end of the first generation. The guide notes that power for the 2.0T increased to 220 horsepower in 2013, and that year also brought the Q5 TDI with a 240-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine and the SQ5 with a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine making 354 horsepower. It also says the Q5 TDI was dropped in 2016, so the 2017 Q5 sits at the end of a generation that had evolved from a simple luxury crossover into a more varied lineup. Owners also tend to praise the 2017 Q5 for its spacious interior, refined comfort, and towing ability, while common concerns include the high purchase price and ownership costs.
There are tradeoffs, though. The buying guide says the Q5’s reliability record is only average as a brand, and first-generation owners have reported issues such as excessive oil consumption and failing timing chains, especially on 2.0T models. It also mentions rattling or leaking panoramic sunroofs and noisy suspension caused by failing control arms. Even so, the 2017 Audi Q5 remains appealing because it delivers the feel of a premium SUV with a roomy, well-built cabin and a polished driving experience.

Drives great, tows way more than it should, beyond comfortable and has a refined interior. Pricey but checked all the boxes of what I was looking for at a lower cost point then the trucks and larger suvs I was originally looking at. Audi makes great vehicles if you can accept the high cost of ownership. Only reason I’m not going five stars is price of purchase and cost of ownership. Otherwise I love the vehicle.

I think the interface on the car needs to be updated to fit modern and future technology. The horse power needs to be beefed up to stay competative in the segment its in. Overall its a good, safe and economical car. The Quattro system is great, and the cabin comfort is excellent.

| Year-Round Low | $12,579 |
| Year-Round High | $13,769 |

| Change vs. Last Year | −8.34% |

There are 1,597 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2017 Audi Q5 a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Audi Q5 earns a 4.6/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Drivers repeatedly praise its fun driving experience, spacious interior, and refined comfort. The review summary also highlights towing capacity and handling, while noting that the blend of luxury and practicality often outweighs the negatives.
For you, that means this model makes the most sense if you want a premium SUV that feels comfortable, useful, and enjoyable rather than flashy. With 34.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Audi Q5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The review summary points to a vehicle that many drivers find dependable and trouble-free in day-to-day use, with comfort and practicality helping support long-term ownership appeal. It also suggests that owners feel confident enough in the Q5’s overall experience to recommend it despite higher running costs.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that maintenance history matters a lot, so a well-kept example is far safer than one with gaps in service records.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Audi Q5?
At 66.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and confirm whether any prior damage was repaired properly. Then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing has higher mileage or incomplete service records.
Focus your inspection on overall condition, signs of past bodywork, and evidence of consistent maintenance. A clean-looking Q5 can still hide expensive issues, so documentation matters as much as appearance.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Audi Q5?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting deep discounts on every listing.
- Deal availability: 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,597 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.34% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $12,579, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2017 Audi Q5's resale value?
The current average of $12,614 sits slightly below last year's $13,761.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help future buyers but may limit short-term upside for sellers. If you plan to resell later, buying at the right price matters because a softer market can compress your return.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Audi Q5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.34% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $15,726, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $12,614 average.
- It brings a full redesign with more technology and interior room.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2017 is the stronger starting point because pricing has eased and owner satisfaction is high. If you can stretch your budget and want the newer redesign, the 2018 is the better upgrade path; if you are price-sensitive, the 2017 is the smarter buy.
