CarGurus Analysis: 2017 Audi Q5

Summary
With 265 currently listed for sale near New York, NY and an average price of $12,922, 18.9% of 2017 Audi Q5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2017 Audi Q5 4.6 / 5 stars.
76.2% of 2017 Q5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2017 Audi Q5 stands out as a luxury SUV that blends refinement, practicality, and a strong standard equipment list. Audi’s buying guide describes the Q5 as a midsize SUV with standard quattro all-wheel drive, and says its appeal is centered on its luxurious interior, upmarket image, and practicality rather than off-road ability. For this generation, the Q5 was already well equipped, with standard features including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, Bluetooth, cruise control, three-zone climate control, a rear-view camera, steering wheel-mounted shift paddles, leather upholstery, power front seats and tailgate, and sliding rear seats.
What makes the 2017 model especially distinctive is the breadth of its powertrain and trim offerings by the end of the first generation. The guide notes that power for the 2.0T increased to 220 horsepower in 2013, and that year also brought the Q5 TDI with a 240-horsepower 3.0-liter V6 diesel engine and the SQ5 with a supercharged 3.0-liter V6 engine making 354 horsepower. It also says the Q5 TDI was dropped in 2016, so the 2017 Q5 sits at the end of a generation that had evolved from a simple luxury crossover into a more varied lineup. Owners also tend to praise the 2017 Q5 for its spacious interior, refined comfort, and towing ability, while common concerns include the high purchase price and ownership costs.
There are tradeoffs, though. The buying guide says the Q5’s reliability record is only average as a brand, and first-generation owners have reported issues such as excessive oil consumption and failing timing chains, especially on 2.0T models. It also mentions rattling or leaking panoramic sunroofs and noisy suspension caused by failing control arms. Even so, the 2017 Audi Q5 remains appealing because it delivers the feel of a premium SUV with a roomy, well-built cabin and a polished driving experience.

Drives great, tows way more than it should, beyond comfortable and has a refined interior. Pricey but checked all the boxes of what I was looking for at a lower cost point then the trucks and larger suvs I was originally looking at. Audi makes great vehicles if you can accept the high cost of ownership. Only reason I’m not going five stars is price of purchase and cost of ownership. Otherwise I love the vehicle.

I think the interface on the car needs to be updated to fit modern and future technology. The horse power needs to be beefed up to stay competative in the segment its in. Overall its a good, safe and economical car. The Quattro system is great, and the cabin comfort is excellent.

If you find a listing below $12,594.02, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2017 Audi Q5 a good car?
Yes — the 2017 Audi Q5 earns a 4.6/5 user rating, which points to strong owner satisfaction.
Drivers consistently praise its fun driving experience, spacious interior, and refined comfort. Many also value the towing capacity and handling, while the luxury feel and practical layout make it appealing if you want an upscale SUV that still works well for everyday use.
That combination fits you well if you want comfort, quality, and usefulness in one package rather than a flashy performance-first SUV. With 33.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2017 Audi Q5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback highlights a dependable-feeling driving experience, with praise for the vehicle’s refined comfort and the sense that it holds up well in daily use. Drivers also describe it as a model they can count on for a balanced mix of luxury and practicality.
For used buyers, that means the ownership experience can be rewarding, but you should still pay close attention to maintenance history and condition because long-term risk depends heavily on how the vehicle was cared for.
What should I look for when buying a used 2017 Audi Q5?
At 66.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report so you can confirm accident records, title status, and service history before you go any further. After that, prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the vehicle has higher mileage or incomplete maintenance documentation.
Focus your inspection on overall condition, signs of prior repair quality, and whether the vehicle feels consistent with its asking price. For a luxury SUV like this, a clean history and strong maintenance record matter as much as the badge.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2017 Audi Q5?

What is the 2017 Audi Q5's resale value?
The current average of $12,804 sits slightly below last year's $13,820.
That softer pricing suggests the model has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future resale stability if you buy at the right price. If you pay close to the low end of the range, you give yourself a better chance of limiting losses later.
Strong owner satisfaction can also support demand when it’s time to sell, especially for shoppers who want a comfortable and well-equipped luxury SUV. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2017 Audi Q5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2017 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2017 if:
- 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.36% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $15,763, the 2018 costs more than the current year's $12,804 average.
- It brings a full redesign with more technology, room, and refinement.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2017 is the stronger starting point because pricing is softer and inventory is broad. If you can stretch your budget and want the newer-generation experience, the 2018 is the better secondary path for buyers who prioritize the redesign over upfront savings.
