What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volvo XC90?

At 69.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a premium trim. Focus on overall condition, signs of prior bodywork, and whether the cabin electronics and safety systems operate as intended.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Momentum is already well equipped, with standard LED daytime running lights, a driver’s knee airbag, electronic stability control, lane-departure warnings, road-sign information, roll stability control, collision avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist detection and avoidance, and driver alert. Higher trims add more luxury touches, and the Inscription brings power side bolsters.
• Powertrain: The XC90 offers a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 250 hp, a more powerful turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-liter with 316 hp, and a hybrid with 400 hp. The base gas model is paired with an 8-speed automatic, and the more powerful setup gives you stronger passing response.
• Safety package: Standard safety equipment includes antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, LED daytime running lights, a suite of airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, tire pressure monitoring, whiplash protection, electronic stability control, collision avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist detection and avoidance, driver alert, lane-departure warnings, road-sign information, and roll stability control. Optional features include a 360-degree surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control with pilot assist, blind-spot information with cross-traffic alerts, front park assist, lane-keeping aid, and park-assist pilot.
• Infotainment: The XC90 uses a 9-inch Sensus touchscreen, and optional Apple CarPlay lets you connect your phone. A built-in hotspot is standard, and the system is designed for intuitive use.
• Fuel efficiency: The XC90 returns 20 mpg city/25 highway, and the review notes that premium fuel is recommended.

Which 2016 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2016 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Momentum, Inscription, and R-Design.

Here's the short version:

• Momentum: This is the best-value starting point because it already includes a long list of standard safety and comfort features, plus the core XC90 luxury experience. If you want the most accessible way into the model without giving up the essentials, this is the trim to target.
• Inscription: Choose this if you want a more upscale cabin and added comfort touches, including power side bolsters. It makes the XC90 feel more premium without changing the basic formula.
• R-Design: Pick this if you want the sportier-looking, performance-focused version. It also has access to the R-Design Climate Package, which adds heated rear seats, a heated windshield, and heated windshield-washer nozzles.

The standard safety equipment is already strong on every trim, while optional packages add features like blind-spot information, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view camera.

What is the 2016 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $13,683 sits slightly below last year's $15,509.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. If you buy at a strong price and keep the vehicle in clean condition, you’ll be better positioned to protect value later.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Should I buy a 2016 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 33.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 69.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.77% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 XC90 is an all-new flagship model with strong safety, a premium interior, and flexible seating for 5 or 7 passengers.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest value today, the 2016 is appealing because prices have eased and the model still delivers a premium cabin, strong safety, and broad utility. If you’re especially price-sensitive, shop carefully for accident-free examples and prioritize the trim that gives you the features you’ll actually use, rather than paying extra for equipment you don’t need.
