How much does the 2016 Volvo XC90 cost?

There are 716 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2016 Volvo XC90 a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Volvo XC90 earns a 4.6/5 user rating and an 8.7/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Technology, and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its comfort, spacious interior, and high safety ratings, and they also highlight the quality and luxury features. That lines up with its role as a flexible flagship SUV with seating for 5 or 7 passengers, plus room for cargo, so you get family-friendly practicality without giving up the upscale feel.

There are also signs of strong market interest, with 37.7% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Is the 2016 Volvo XC90 reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner feedback points to a dependable, trouble-free ownership experience centered on comfort, safety, and quality. The expert review also emphasizes the XC90’s solid build, smooth operation, and the sense that it’s a car you can count on for daily family use.

The ownership package includes factory scheduled maintenance coverage for 3 years/36,000 miles, which helps reduce early upkeep concerns.

For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that premium-luxury ownership can still bring higher repair and maintenance costs as the vehicle ages.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volvo XC90?

At 67.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a lower asking price. Focus on signs of prior body damage, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and any evidence that safety systems or electronics have been repaired poorly.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base Momentum is already well equipped, but the Inscription adds more luxury touches, while the R-Design brings a more performance-focused appearance and its own climate package option. If you want the best value, the Momentum is the trim to compare first because it already includes a strong safety and comfort foundation.
• Powertrain: The XC90 uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder in T5 models, a more powerful supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter in T6 models, and a 400-hp hybrid option. The gas engines are paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and the T5 is the only front-wheel-drive choice.
• Safety package: Standard equipment includes collision avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist detection and avoidance, driver alert, lane-departure warnings, road-sign information, and roll stability control. Optional upgrades add blind-spot information, cross-traffic alerts, a 360-degree surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping aid, and park-assist pilot.
• Infotainment: The XC90 uses a 9-inch Sensus touchscreen, and optional Apple CarPlay is available. The system is designed for easy swipe-and-tap use, and the display can be used with gloves on.
• Fuel efficiency: The XC90 is rated at 20 mpg city/25 highway, and the expert review notes that premium fuel is recommended.

Which 2016 Volvo XC90 trim should I buy?

The 2016 Volvo XC90 is offered in 3 trim levels: Momentum, Inscription, and R-Design.

Here's the short version:

• Momentum: This is the best-value starting point because it already includes a long list of standard safety and comfort features, including collision avoidance, lane-departure warnings, road-sign information, and a premium-feeling cabin. If you want the XC90 experience without paying for extra luxury trim content, this is the one to target.
• Inscription: Choose this if you want a more upscale interior and added luxury touches. It builds on the XC90’s already strong standard equipment and suits you best if cabin materials and a more premium presentation matter most.
• R-Design: Pick this if you want the sportier-looking version of the XC90. It adds a more performance-oriented appearance and has its own climate package option, making it the right fit if style matters as much as family utility.

Safety remains a major strength across the lineup, and the XC90’s standard driver-assistance equipment is already extensive even before you add packages.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Volvo XC90?

This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and pricing softness to make comparison shopping worthwhile.

• Deal availability: 37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 716 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.89% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 67.9% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $13,562, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Volvo XC90's resale value?

The current average of $13,562 sits slightly below last year's $15,392.

That price movement suggests the XC90 has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy at the current average or below, you may have less downside left than a shopper who paid closer to the original market peak.

Strong owner satisfaction also helps support demand over time, especially for a family-oriented luxury SUV with a reputation for safety and comfort. Well-kept examples with clean history and desirable equipment should remain easier to move than neglected ones.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Volvo XC90 safe?

The 2016 Volvo XC90 earns the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s Top Safety Pick+ rating and Good marks in every category.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution, a suite of airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, tire pressure monitoring, whiplash protection, and electronic stability control. Standard driver-assistance features include collision avoidance with pedestrian and cyclist detection and avoidance, driver alert, lane-departure warnings, road-sign information, and roll stability control.

Optional safety upgrades include a 360-degree surround-view camera, adaptive cruise control with pilot assist, blind-spot information with cross-traffic alerts, front park assist, lane-keeping aid, and park-assist pilot. The main caveat is that some of the most advanced features are bundled into optional packages rather than included on every trim.

Should I buy a 2016 Volvo XC90 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 67.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.89% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 XC90 stands out as an all-new luxury SUV with strong safety and technology, plus flexible seating for 5 or 7 passengers.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price softness, strong safety, and family-friendly luxury, the 2016 is a smart place to start. If you’re shopping primarily for the newest-feeling tech or want to compare broader powertrain and feature updates, a nearby model year may be worth a look, but you’ll likely pay more for it.
