Is the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta a good car?

Yes — the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta earns a 4.7/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

If you’re buying used, the main ownership risk is making sure the turbocharged powertrain and any missing equipment concerns have been checked carefully before you commit.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Volkswagen Jetta?

At 52.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had prior bodywork or a long list of owners. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and whether the equipment you want is actually present, since some shoppers have noted missing features. A careful test drive should also confirm that the turbocharged engine responds cleanly and that the car feels tight and well maintained.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 1.4T S starts with 15-inch steel wheels, heated mirrors, keyless entry, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, full power, air conditioning, and a 5-inch touchscreen. The S Tech Package adds a 6.3-inch touchscreen, USB port, satellite radio, rear-view camera, and smartphone integration, while the 1.4T SE adds 16-inch alloys, push-button start, and heated front seats. The 1.8T Sport adds the larger engine, sport suspension, and 17-inch alloys, while the 1.8T SEL adds a softer suspension tune, unique 17-inch alloys, keyless entry and ignition, an upgraded interior, automatic headlights and wipers, and a sunroof. The best-value trim is the 1.4T SE if you want a stronger feature set without moving too far up the price ladder.
• Powertrain: The new 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder makes 150 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque from just 1,400 rpm, with 28 mpg city/39 highway/32 combined using the 6-speed automatic and 33 combined with the 5-speed manual. The 1.8-liter turbo adds 20 hp up high and returns 25 mpg city/36 highway/29 combined with the automatic. The 2.0-liter turbo offers 210 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque with a 6-speed manual, or 24 city mpg/33 highway/27 combined with the DSG.
• Safety package: The Driver Assistance package on 1.8T trims adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and frontal collision avoidance with automatic braking. Standard safety equipment includes traction and stability control, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, front-side and side-curtain airbags, and active head restraints. Lower trims miss some of the advanced driver-assistance content.
• Infotainment: The upgraded setup centers on a 6.3-inch touchscreen with an actual USB port and full smartphone integration through Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The tech upgrade is a meaningful step up from the smaller screen and older connection setup.
• Fuel efficiency: The 1.4-liter turbo returns 28 mpg city/39 highway/32 combined with the automatic and 33 combined with the manual. The 1.8-liter turbo returns 25 mpg city/36 highway/29 combined, while the 2.0-liter turbo returns 24 city mpg/33 highway/27 combined with the DSG.

Which 2016 Volkswagen Jetta trim should I buy?

The 2016 Volkswagen Jetta is offered in 5 trim levels: 1.4T S, 1.4T SE, 1.8T Sport, 1.8T SEL, and 2.0T.

Here's the short version:

• 1.4T S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the basics plus the 5-inch touchscreen, heated mirrors, keyless entry, and full power. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the Jetta, but you’ll likely want the available tech upgrade.
• 1.4T SE: This is the best-value trim because it adds 16-inch alloys, push-button start, and heated front seats without jumping into the more expensive performance-oriented versions. If you want the most balanced mix of comfort and value, this is the one to target.
• 1.8T Sport: Choose this if you want the larger engine and a sport suspension, along with 17-inch alloys. It’s the right pick if you care more about driving feel than comfort extras.
• 1.8T SEL: This trim adds a softer suspension tune, unique 17-inch alloys, keyless entry and ignition, an upgraded interior, automatic headlights and wipers, and a sunroof. It suits you if you want a more upscale feel and more convenience features.
• 2.0T: This is the performance-focused choice, with 210 hp and a 6-speed manual. It’s the trim for buyers who want the quickest Jetta and are willing to trade some efficiency for speed.

The safety package on 1.8T trims adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and frontal collision avoidance with automatic braking.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Volkswagen Jetta?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find value.

• Deal availability: 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,022 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.56% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 52.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $8,819, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta's resale value?

The current average of $8,991 sits slightly below last year's $9,421.

That decline suggests the market has softened, which can help you buy more affordably now but may also limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key is to buy well and keep the car in strong condition, because a lower entry price can help offset some depreciation. The Jetta’s broad appeal and strong owner satisfaction should still support demand, especially if you choose a well-equipped trim and maintain it carefully.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta safe?

The 2016 Volkswagen Jetta earns a five-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash tests and five-star ratings in all other NHTSA tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it its highest rating of Good in all tests.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

The Jetta’s available Driver Assistance package adds adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and frontal collision avoidance with automatic braking. Standard safety equipment also includes traction and stability control, 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, front-side and side-curtain airbags, and active head restraints. The main caveat is that some of the more advanced safety tech is tied to higher trims or packages, so you’ll want to confirm exactly what’s installed on any used example.

Should I buy a 2016 Volkswagen Jetta or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 27.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 52.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.56% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The new turbocharged engine and updated touchscreen make this year feel more modern and more competitive.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $7,985, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $8,991 average.
• It’s a versatile daily driver with engaging personality and practical appeal.

Consider the 2017 if:

• At $10,260, the 2017 costs more than the current year's $8,991 average.
• It adds a standard reversing camera and a mild trim and safety reshuffle.

The bottom line: The 2016 is the sweet spot if you want the updated engine and tech without paying 2017 money. If your budget is tighter, the 2015 can still make sense, but you give up some of the 2016’s modernization.

How does the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta compare to the 2016 Honda Civic?

Our experts score the 2016 Volkswagen Jetta 7.7/10 and the 2016 Honda Civic 8/10. The Jetta is the value play here, with a much lower average used price and a stronger accident-free share. The Civic counters with better fuel economy, more listings, and a slightly higher expert score. If you want the cheaper buy with solid safety and a strong feature update, the Jetta makes sense; if you want the more efficient and more broadly shopped compact sedan, the Civic has the edge.
