Is the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta a good car?

Generally — the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta earns a 4.3/5 user rating and a 6/10 expert rating, which points to a car that lands in the middle of the pack overall. The model scores 7/10 across Performance and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its reliability, fuel efficiency, and comfortable ride, along with the roomy interior. That lines up with the Jetta’s practical side in the overview: it’s comfortable to drive, has a spacious trunk, and works well as a daily-use compact sedan.

At the same time, the market shows 27.6% of listings as good or great deals, so there is some room to shop selectively rather than rush.

Is the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta reliable?

Owners rate it 4.3/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback highlights reliability, fuel efficiency, and a comfortable ride, while also pointing to the car as a dependable choice for everyday use. The expert evaluation also describes the Jetta as a joy to drive and notes that the updated powertrain feels refined, which supports the sense that it can be a confident long-term companion.

Volkswagen also includes 2-year/24,000-mile free maintenance coverage, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure you avoid examples with expensive engine or maintenance issues.

What should I look for when buying a used 2014 Volkswagen Jetta?

At 54% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has higher mileage or incomplete service records. Focus on overall condition, because the Jetta’s appeal depends heavily on whether the car has been maintained well and whether any prior damage was repaired properly.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base 2.0L S keeps things simple with a 4-cylinder engine, manual transmission, 15-inch steel wheels, power windows, and a height-adjustable driver’s seat, while higher trims add features like leatherette upholstery, Bluetooth connectivity, a power moonroof, push-button ignition, navigation, a rear-view camera, and a Fender sound system. The 1.8T SE with Connectivity and Sunroof is the best-value choice if you want a stronger feature mix without jumping to the top of the range.
• Powertrain: The lineup includes a turbocharged 1.8-liter engine, and the updated setup is described as smooth, refined, and eager, with strong low-rpm torque and confident passing. The base variant keeps the older hydraulic steering system, while most other trims get electric power steering.
• Safety package: Volkswagen equips the Jetta with standard 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, electronic stability control, and 6 airbags. Some trims add a rear-view camera, HID headlights that swivel with the road, and LED taillights.
• Infotainment: Most trims include a Media Device Interface with an iPod adaptor, and the 1.8T SE with Connectivity and Sunroof adds a touchscreen audio system with clearly labeled controls and an SD card slot. VW Car-Net also brings crash notification, stolen vehicle tracking, remote unlocking, and text alerts.
• Fuel efficiency: The automatic 1.8-liter model is rated at 25 mpg in the city, 36 mpg on the highway, and 29 mpg combined, and the review also notes an average of 27.2 mpg during testing. The Jetta Hybrid is cited at 45 mpg combined.

Which 2014 Volkswagen Jetta trim should I buy?

The 2014 Volkswagen Jetta is offered in 6 trim levels: 2.0L S, 1.8T SE, 1.8T SE with Connectivity, 1.8T SE with Connectivity and Sunroof, 1.8T SEL, and TDI trims.

Here's the short version:

• 2.0L S: This is the simplest way into the Jetta, with basic equipment and the least content. It makes sense only if you want the lowest-frills version and are comfortable giving up the nicer convenience and tech features found higher up.
• 1.8T SE: This trim adds the turbocharged engine plus leatherette upholstery, satellite radio service, and exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals. It is a stronger everyday pick than the base model if you want more comfort and a better powertrain.
• 1.8T SE with Connectivity: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds Bluetooth connectivity, VW Car-Net, and 16-inch alloy wheels on top of the SE equipment. It gives you a more modern feature set without pushing too far up the price ladder.
• 1.8T SE with Connectivity and Sunroof: This version builds on the Connectivity trim with a power moonroof, push-button ignition, and an upgraded touchscreen audio unit. Choose it if you want a nicer cabin experience and can pay a bit more for convenience features.
• 1.8T SEL: This is the most upscale gas trim described here, with an automatic transmission, 17-inch alloys, navigation, a rear-view camera, and a Fender sound system. It suits you if you want the most complete comfort-and-tech package.
• TDI trims: Volkswagen also offers diesel-powered versions that largely mirror the 1.8T trims in content. They make sense if you want the diesel powertrain and the same general equipment ladder.

Some trims add a rear-view camera, HID headlights that swivel, and LED taillights, so it’s worth checking exactly which safety and convenience features are included on the specific car you’re considering.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2014 Volkswagen Jetta?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find decent value.

• Deal availability: 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 800 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.69% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 54.0% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $7,135, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta's resale value?

The current average of $7,260 sits slightly below last year's $7,618.

That softer pricing suggests the Jetta has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stays steady. A lower entry price can also make the car easier to move later, especially if you buy a clean, well-kept example now.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta safe?

The 2014 Volkswagen Jetta earns four-star ratings for front-impact and rollover protection from NHTSA.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Volkswagen includes standard 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, electronic stability control, and 6 airbags. Some trims also add a rear-view camera, HID headlights that swivel toward the direction of travel, and LED taillights that illuminate faster than traditional bulbs.

A key caveat is that official crash-test results are incomplete in the source material, so you should pay close attention to the exact equipment on the car you’re considering.

Should I buy a 2014 Volkswagen Jetta or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2014 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2014 if:

• 27.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 54% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 4.69% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2014 brings a new turbocharged engine and an upgraded suspension that make it notably more engaging to drive.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $7,985, the 2015 costs more than the current year's $7,260 average.
• It is positioned as a versatile daily driver for commuting, family use, and road trips.

The bottom line: If you want the lower price and the more engaging driving character, the 2014 is the stronger value play. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year and a broader daily-driver focus, the 2015 is the safer alternative.

How does the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta compare to the 2014 Honda Civic?

Our experts score the 2014 Volkswagen Jetta 6/10 and the 2014 Honda Civic 8.2/10.
