Volkswagen used its direct-injection TDI turbodiesel engine in Jetta models all the way back to the A3 generation in 1992, but we’re mostly concerned with the A6 generation, which was on sale from 2011 through 2017. The TDI is powered by a 2.0-liter turbo-charged diesel engine, which only offered 140 horsepower, but more importantly, it provided 235 lb-ft of torque at just 1,750 RPM. That makes for the kind of low-end passing power that prior diesel engines in the VW lineup could only dream of. It’s worth noting that these were the cars that were the subject of the US EPA and California Air Resources Board lawsuits, which called out 480,000 VW and Audi vehicles that had been sold with an emissions compliance defeat device. The device allowed the TDI to emit 40x more nitrogen oxides than was allowed by law. VW owners had the choice to sell these cars back to VW, or accept compensation for potential loss of value.
