Is the 2016 Toyota Tundra a good car?

Generally — the 2016 Toyota Tundra earns a 4.3/5 user rating and a 6.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Form and function at 8/10.

Owners consistently point to its power, reliability, smooth ride, interior comfort, and resale value. In practical terms, that lines up with a truck that feels straightforward and work-ready, while still appealing if you want traditional full-size-truck character. The market also shows 30.4% of listings as good or great deals, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2016 Toyota Tundra reliable?

The owner feedback highlights reliability, dependability, and a truck you can count on over time. The expert notes also describe it as capable and stout, which supports the idea that it’s built for hard use. Toyota’s maintenance-friendly touches and the truck’s reputation for durability add to the appeal if you plan to keep it for the long haul.

You should still budget carefully for age-related wear, since repair costs can be a concern on used examples.

What should I look for when buying a used 2016 Toyota Tundra?

At 55.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

Start with a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage truck or one with work-truck use. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repairs, and whether the truck’s maintenance history matches its claimed condition. Because repair costs can be a concern, you’ll want to be especially careful about anything that suggests deferred maintenance.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The truck’s trim progression adds meaningful equipment, with the upper trims bringing more comfort and convenience features. The base setup is more work-focused, while higher trims add features that make daily use easier.
• Powertrain: The Tundra uses a 381-hp 5.7-liter V8 with 401 lb-ft of torque and a 6-speed automatic. It’s described as grunty and stout, but fuel economy is a weak point at 13 mpg city/17 highway and 15 mpg combined.
• Safety package: Standard safety features include traction control, stability control, trailer brake control, and sway control. Available features include a rear camera, front and rear parking sonar, and a blind-spot monitor with cross-traffic alert.
• Infotainment: The upgraded Entune system includes real-time traffic and weather, and it uses a 7-inch screen. Standard tech includes heated mirrors and wipers, USB ports, and an auxiliary jack, while higher trims add features like navigation and dual-zone climate control.
• Fuel efficiency: The truck is rated at 13 mpg city, 17 mpg highway, and 15 mpg combined.

Which 2016 Toyota Tundra trim should I buy?

The 2016 Toyota Tundra is offered in 3 trim levels: SR5, Limited, Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the most affordable path into the Tundra and adds useful everyday equipment like fog lights, HD and satellite radio, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror. It’s the best fit if you want the essentials without paying for luxury extras.
• Limited: This is the best-value trim if you want a more polished truck without jumping all the way to the top. It adds automatic headlights, dual-zone climate control, a power-sliding rear window, and navigation.
• Platinum: This is the most upscale version and the one that brings the most comfort and convenience. It adds the most premium-feeling equipment, including the safety and visibility systems mentioned in the tech and safety content, and suits you best if you want the most fully equipped Tundra.

The safety content notes that some features are available rather than standard, so it’s worth checking exactly which driver-assistance items are included on the truck you’re considering.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2016 Toyota Tundra?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,316 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.24% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 55.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $24,750, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2016 Toyota Tundra's resale value?

The current average of $25,072 sits slightly below last year's $25,646.

That softer pricing suggests the truck has become a bit easier to buy, which can help you if you’re shopping now. For a future seller, the current trend means you may not see rapid appreciation, but the Tundra’s reputation for durability and owner satisfaction should help support demand. Trucks with strong perceived reliability often stay attractive to used buyers even when prices cool.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.3/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2016 Toyota Tundra safe?

The 2016 Toyota Tundra earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, and the CrewMax specifically rated three-star in frontal impacts and rollovers. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded its highest rating of Good in all tested segments.

It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety equipment includes traction and stability control, trailer brake and sway control, and eight airbags with full-length side airbags. Available features include a rear camera, front and rear parking sonar, and a blind-spot monitor with cross-traffic alert. The main caveat is that some safety features are optional rather than standard, so you’ll want to verify equipment carefully on any used listing.

Should I buy a 2016 Toyota Tundra or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2016 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2016 if:

• 30.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 55.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 2.24% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.3/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The 2016 brings an upgraded Entune system, a larger gas tank, and an integrated brake controller on upper trims.

Consider the 2015 if:

• At $23,587, the 2015 costs less than the current year's $25,072 average.
• It stands out most in TRD Pro trim, where special suspension upgrades and distinctive detailing give it extra personality.

The bottom line: If you want the newer truck with updated tech and a slightly softer market price, the 2016 is the cleaner pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2015 can make sense, especially if you find a well-kept example with the right trim.

How does the 2016 Toyota Tundra compare to the 2016 Ford F-150?

Our experts score the 2016 Toyota Tundra 6.5/10 and the 2016 Ford F-150 8.5/10.

The Tundra brings stronger traditional truck character, a stout V8, and a reputation for reliability and resale value. The F-150 is the more efficient and more broadly appealing choice here, with better fuel economy, more listings, and a lower average used price. If you want the truck that feels more old-school and durable, the Tundra has appeal; if you want the better all-around value and broader market support, the F-150 has the edge.
